Description

March 19; 1963 F. P. VINELLA TERRAZZO BORDER GRINDING MACHINE Filed April 5, 1961 INVENTOR.
FRANK P. VINELLA ATTORNEY United States Patent 3,081,583 TERRAZZO BORDER GRINDING MACHINE Frank P. Vinella, 2536 24th Ave. S., Minneapolis, Minn. Filed Apr. 5, 1961, Ser. No. 100,877 1 Claim. (Cl. 51-177) This invention relates broadly to terrazzo finishing machines and more particularly to a short shaft terrazzo border grinding machine.
The principal object of this invention is to provide a terrazzo border grinding machine having swivel guide means to afford complete maneuverability of the unit.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a terrazzo border grinding machine having adjustable carriage leveling means cooperating with the said swivel guide means whereby the grinding stone may be kept level with its work by a single simple adjustment thereby compensating for grinding stone wear.
These and other objects of the invention will become apparent from the following specification and claim when taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this application, and in which drawing, like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
To the above end, generally stated, the invention consists of the following devices and combination of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claim.
Referring to the drawings:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the complete terrazzo border grinding machine embodying the invention.
FIG. 2 is a rear elevational view of the same partly in section taken on the line 2-2 of FIG. 1, and
FIG. 3 is an exploded view illustrating the several elements of the swivel assembly.
In the interest of brevity and clarity and inasmuch as no inventive concept is involved, certain component elements of the device will be hereinafter referred to generally and only in order to present an operable unit wherein the invention is embodied. Of these elements shown on the drawing, it is important to note the water tank 4 and its hold down straps 5, the electric motor 6 and its switch assembly 7; the adjusting screw housing 9; the grinding head assembly 10; and front and rear handly bar assemblies 11 and 12 respectively.
Referring specifically now to the invention herein involved, a heavy pivot bracket 13 affords a mounting station for the electric motor 6 and a pivot platform 14 is pivotally connected to the pivot bracket 13 by means of a pivot shaft 15 which is held positioned against endwise lateral movements by cotter pins 16 which extend through transverse bores in the ends of the pivot shaft 15. A yoke-like link 17 connecting the adjusting screw assembly 8 and the pivot platform 14 affords the means whereby the device is held level to its work by manually compensating for grinding stone wear by manipulation of the adjusting screw hand wheel 8'.
Secured to the pivot bracket 13 in conjunction with the rear pair of motor mounting screws 18 are a pair of pin blocks 19, each having a guide pin 20 that extends outwardly of each side of the said pivot bracket 13.
A pair of caster brackets 21 comprising a base plate 22, and end plate 23 and stiifening webs 24 are secured to each side of the pivot platform 14 adjacent the rear end portion thereof by means of heavy machine screws 25 that extend through a bore in the lower central portion of the end plates 23 of the caster brackets 21 and into screw threaded engagement with a bore formed in opposed bosses 26 on the rear end portion of the pivot platform 14. It will be understood that said caster brackets 21 are secured to the pivot platform 14 with a close working fit for limited rotation about the axis of the screws 25.
A vertically disposed slot 27 is formed in the trans verse center of each end plate 23 of each caster bracket 21 and the guide pin 20 extends into said slots 27. This arrangement of said parts permits movement of the pivot platform 14 relative to the pivot bracket 13.
A pair of caster wheels 28 are rigidly secured to the underside of the base plate 22 of the caster bracket 21 between the stiffening webs 24 and are self-leveling by virtue of the axial movement of the caster brackets 21 relative to the pivot platform 14.
A rubber bumper 29 surrounds the base plate 22 of each caster bracket 21 and a flexible splash guard 30 depends from the upper edge portion of the forward stiffening web 24 of each caster bracket .21 and is secured thereto by means of screws 31 having engagement with bores in the forward stiffening webs 24.
While there is herein disclosed but one embodiment of the structure of the invention herein presented, it is possible to produce still other embodiments without departing from the inventive concept herein disclosed, and it is desired, therefore, that only such limitations be imposed on the appended claim as stated herein.
What I claim is:
In a terrazzo border surfacing machine having an electric motor adapted to be energized by a. source of power and having a grinding head assembly arranged to be driven by the said electric motor, a plurality of hollow housings interconnecting the electric motor and the grinding head assembly, and driving connections between said electric motor and the grinding head in said housings, a pivotal motor mounting bracket pivotally connected to a pivot platform having a pair of ground engaging caster wheels, an adjusting screw connected by linkage to the pivot platform and a hand wheel cooperating with the adjusting screw the said linkage, and the pivot platform to adjust the surfacing machine to its work and compensate the same for wear of the grinding stone mounted in the grinding head assembly, a pair of caster brackets pivotally mounted on the pivot platform, guide means on the pivotal motor mounting bracket cooperating with means on said caster brackets whereby the same are self-leveling as the surfacing machine is manually leveled to compensate for wear of the grinding stone of the grinding head assembly, a pin block rigidly secured to the pivotal motor mounting bracket one on each side portion thereof and a guide pin secured in each pin block and protruding laterally, outwardly of each thereof, a pair of caster brackets having a base plate, an end plate, and depending front and rear stifiening webs, means for securing the said caster brackets to the pivot platform for limited rotation about the transverse axis of said securing means, a caster wheel secured in each caster bracket for rotation about a vertical axis and a vertically disposed slot in the end plate of the caster bracket to receive the said protruding guide pins to thus limit the References Cited in the file of this patent UNITED STATES PATENTS Hearing Jan. 12, 1909 Vinella May 8, 1934 Hill Dec. 17, 1935 10 4 Mall Nov. 2, 1937 Zschav May 21, 1940 Mall Nov. 3, 1942 Bateman June 17, 1952 Ratcliffe so. 18, 1956 Bard June 24, 195 8 Rheeling July 22, 1958 Orr Dec. 2, 1958 Vinella Nov. 24, 1959 Biasoni Feb. 2, 1960
