SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 307,965, dated November 11, 1884.

To all whom it may concern;

Be it known that we, WVILLIAM H. LEWIs and Ennsrus B. BARKER, both of the city, county, and State of New York, have in- 5 vented certain new and useful Improvements in Cameras, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

Our invention consists in certain novel features of construction having the object to 1 produce a lighter and more convenient instrument than heretofore made.

g The improvements relate particularly to the folding bed, to the means for securing the object-glass in place, and to the construc- 1 tion of the box, all as hereinafter described and claimed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate cor- 2 responding parts in all the figures.

Figure l is a longitudinal section of a camera of the improved construction with the plate-holder in place. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the camera with the object-glass partially broken away, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a plate-holder as made for use with this instrument.

In their general construction the box A, the lens-frame B, and bed 0, on which the box slides, are as usual in cameras of this class. The bed-frame O is hinged at a, so as to fold up compactly behind the box for con venienee of transportation, and it is fitted with the rack I), that is engaged by the pinion c on the box for adjustment of the latter.

For holding the bed firmly in its horizontal position the hooks (1 cl are provided, these being pivoted 'on the sides of the frame at each side in position for being turned down 40 upon and over the crossbar 0.

As shown most clearly in Fig. 1, the pivots of the hooks d are in front of and below the hinges a, while their ends taking over the bar 6 are behind the hinges, so that any tend- 5 ency of the bed to rise causes a clamping or binding action that prevents such rise. The

hooks can be easily raised when the bed is to be folded up.

The second feature of invention relates to the corner clamps f, by which the objectglass f/ is held in the frame h. These cornerclamps have each a spring-tongue, f, projecting upon the glass at the outside, so as to press the same firmly into the rabbet of the frame and thus prevent any looseness of the glass. 5 5 XVith these clamps glass of any thickness may be used without regard to the depth of the rabbet, as the clamps will accommodate themselves to the glass.

The third feature of improvement has the object to reduce the weight and allow the use of plate-holders of more simple construction than heretofore employed. Usually the plate-holder is ribbed and the edges of the box grooved to receive the rib, so as to prevent movement of the holder, and that construction requires material of considerable thickness in both the box and holder.

As shown in the drawings, a rib, k, or pro jecting flange is formed at the inner edges of the box-frame, and the opening in holder D is of a size to fit outside the rib k, so that when the holder is put in place the rib passes into the opening. It will be seen that with this construction the opening in the holderframe is relatively larger than that of the box, and the thickness of material correspondingly reduced, and, further, that the holder-frame is of plain construction.

Having thus described our invention, what Sc: we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a camera having a hinged or folding bed, the means, substantially as described, for holding the bed in position for use, 0011- sisting of hooks pivoted below the hinge, so as to bind the parts as specified.

2. In a camera, the combination of hooks d d with hinged bed-frame O, substantially in the manner and for the purpose specified.
