(Ci. 5348) This invention relates to the packaging of bottles, and the like in wrap-around paperboard carriers. My invention has special application for use with paperboard cartons of the type having openings in its top panel to receive the upper portions of the bottles to be packaged. In addition, the cartons may have overlapping closure panels, one of which has a latch opening and the other of which includes a rotary catch for engagement with such latch openings. Such a carton closure is disclosed in the copending application of Arthur J. Weiss, Serial No. 748,728, filed July 15, 1958, now US. Patent No. 2,990,997. To close and lock the carton, the closing and locking means of the machine disclosed in my copending application, Serial No. 744,634, filed June 26, 1958, now U.S. Patent No. 2,986,857, may be utilized.
Summary In accordance with my invention the containers are delivered into the machine by a container conveyor. The paperboard carton blanks are delivered into the machine on a carton blank conveyor and while traveling on it, the side panels are folded downwardly. The incoming containers are segregated into groups to be packaged in onecarton. The carton blanks with their side panels folded downwardly are advanced to the end of the carton blank conveyor and dropped upon the groups of containers under the end of such conveyor.
A vertically reciprocating pusher descends upon the falling carton blanks and forces them into position with respect to the upper portions of the containers. The segregated containers and folded carton blanks are then conveyed through the remainder of the machine where the carton blank is closed and locked around the containers.
The incoming containers carried on the container conveyor are segregated into groups for packaging by first being held by primary stops which interrupt their path of travel. Then secondary stops are inserted into the rows of incoming containers behind those containers which will be at the rear of the rows in a particular carton. The primary stops are then withdrawn to permit the removal of the containers segregated between the primary and secondary stops. During the removal of the segregated containers, the incoming containers are held by the secondary stops.
As the folded carton blank drops upon the containers, a pusher member operating with a vertically reciprocating motion forces the folded carton blank down into position upon the containers. Pressure plates attached to the pusher member bear upon the top panels between the upper portions of the containers to insure the proper engagement of the folded carton blank. A conveyor then advances the containers and carton blank from the area between the primary and secondary stops. The contain ers and folded carton blank are then conveyed through the remainder of the machine where the closing and locking of the carton blank is completed.
In one form of the machine heretofore employed, and which is described and claimed in my copending application, Serial No. 775,243, filed November 20, 1958, now US Patent No. 2,998,685, the carton blank upon dropping from the carton blank conveyor was forced into position upon the containers by means of a rotating assembly containing rollers. In the case of a carton of the type in which the upper portion of the containers extend through the carton blank it may be diihcult to position the carton properly by means of such a roller assembly. Extending upper portions .of the containers such as the necks of bottles make it difiicult for the rollers to contact the portions of the carton blank between the bottle necks. In my invention the provision of the pusher means permits the carton blanks upon being dropped from the end of the carton blank conveyor to be positively positioned down over the containers without interference with the containers. By virtue of the openings in the pusher means and its vertical linear motion, the pusher means can descend down over the containers during which time the upper portions of the containers may extend through the openings in the pusher means. Thus, the carton blanks may be seated completely over the containers regardless of the fact that the upper portions of the containers extend through the carton blank for an appreciable distance. For the case of containers such as bottles or ones of other fragile material the pusher means may be provided with resiliently mounted pressure plates which serve to force the carton blank down into position upon the containers. In this way the rigid portions of the pusher means do not contact the containers with the possibility of damaging it. The provision of a separate carton blank conveyor makes the machine more versatile since it can readily adjust to accommodate containers and groups of containers of varying sizes. Upon changing the size of the containers or groups, it is only necessary to adjust the height of the carton blank conveyor above the container conveyor and the distance between the carton blank conveyor chains along which the blanks are initially folded. The folding means adjacent to the carton blank conveyor may also be conveniently adjusted. The vertically reciprocating pusher means has the similar advantage in that it can be adjusted to operate with containers and groups of containers of various sizes. In the case of packaging containers of the bottle type it may be necessary only to re position the pusher means with respect to its operating linkage so as to correspond to the change in bottle height. If the change in the containers is considerable it is still only necessary to adjust or replace the pusher member itself while retaining the same operating linkage.
The carton blank to be applied to the containers may be of the type in which the top panel has a plurality of openings to receive the upper portions of the containers. For the case where the containers have neck portions fitted with crown or screw caps the carton blank openings may contain a plurality of tabs extending radially toward the centers of the openings and adapted to engage the lower portion of the crown or screw cap. In order to properly apply such a carton it is essential that the carton blank be forced firmly down upon the containers so that the tabs are seated beneath the lower portion of the cap. The vertical reciprocating pusher means performs this function without interfering with the containers. Other features and advantages of my invention will appear as the description proceeds.
Description In the drawings, I have illustrated a machine to show the best mode contemplated by me of carrying out my invention for applying the'carton blank to containers to be packaged therein.

In FIG. 1, bottles 11) are delivered into the machine in the direction of the arrow by container conveyor driven by sprocket 12 attached to shaft 13. The continual movement of container conveyor 11 constantly forces bott'es in the direction of the arrow. As bottles 10 pass beyond container conveyor 11, they rest upon plate 14 which extends forwardly through the machine. Bottles 10 are segregated into groups to be packaged within carton blank 15 in the region 16 between primary Stops 17 and secondary stops 18. The means of segregating bottles 10 into groups may be of the type disclosed in my copending application, Serial No. 775,243, filed November 20, 1958. In such a machine carton blank 15 is applied over bottles 11) and then primary stop 17 is withdrawn from its extended position in which it hods both bottles 11 and carton blank 15 against forward motion. As the primary stops 17 are withdrawn pusher. members 19 attached to conveyor chains 21 enter behind the rear portion .of the segregated groups and push the bottles and carton blank forward through the machine along plate 14. After bottles 1% and carton blank 15 have been conveyed beyond primary stops 17, these stops are returned to their initial extended position intersecting the line of travel of bottles 11%. At the same time secondary stops 1% are withdrawn from contact with the incoming bottles 10 upon plate 14 so that the bottles are advan:ed into segregating region 16 until they are stopped by contact with primary stops 17. Stops 18 are then returned to the position behind the trailing bottles 1% in segregating region 16 thereby completing the cycle of segregation. Carton blanks 15 are delivered into the machine by carton blank conveyor 21 (FIGS. 1 and 2). Pushers 22 attached to carton blank conveyor 21 urge carton blank 15 in the direction of the arrow as they are supported by contact with carton blank conveyor 21 and by side rails 23. Carton blank conveyor 21 overlies container conveyor 11 and extends in the direction of de'ivery to termination 24 above and adjacent to segregating region 16. At termination 24, carton blank conveyor 21 passes over ider sprockets 25 on shaft 2-5 which is mounted in support members 27. Conveyor 21 and primary and secondary stops 17 and 18, respectively, as well as bottle conveyor 11 are interconnected by mechanical drives so that the units remain in synchronization and so that an individual carton blank 15 is delivered for each group of bottles 10 segregated by primary and secondary stops 17 and 18.
Carton blank 15 includes top panel 28, side panels 29, and closure panels 39. Top panel 23 is provided with openings 31 adapted to receive the neck portions 32 of bottles 10. Openings 31 have radially extending tabs 33 which encircle neck portions 32 when top panel 23 of carton blank 15 is forced into place upon bottles 10. Fold line 34 disposed between side panels 29 and closure panel 30 is interrupted by extensions 35. To enable carton blank 15 to be tightly drawn about bottles 18, side panels 29 are provided with tabs 36 and 37, articuconwith lated to side panel 29 and adapted to conform to the bottom portion of bottles 10. In order to more c'osely conform to the profile of bottles 11 top panel 28 may be provided with intermediate fold lines 38 (FIGS. 6 and 7). To facilitate the carrying of the completed package, tabs 39 are cut across both top panel 28 and extend into side panels 2* Tabs 39 may be deflected inwardly about 1 their attaching fold lines 41 in order to provide a pair of finger openings by which the finished package may be hand carried.
As carton blanks 15 are advanced along carton blank conveyor 21, they pass beneath rotating folders 41 (F168. 1 and 2) which serve to force side panels 29 downwardly and to break fold lines 42 which connect side panels 29 to top panels 23 along carton blank conveyors 21. Folders 41 are attached to brackets 43 which are clamped on the shaft 44 and secured in place by bolts Shaft 44 is supported by bearings 46 mounted in frame members 47 and is driven in rotation by means not shown. Folders 11 are provided with curved portions 48 dsposed along the leading edges of the folders in order to engage side panels 29 smoothly and progressively. Upon a change in the size of bottles 10 to be packaged, conveyors 21 and rotating folders 4-1 may be adjusted with re'pect to one another so as to accommodate the change in the bottle size.
As carton blanks 15 pass beyond termination 24 of carton blank conveyor 21, they begin to drop downwardly upon bottles 10 in segregating region 16. Pusher 49 is operated in a vertically reciprocating manner to insure that carton blanks 15 positively descend upon and engage bottles 10 (FIGS. 3 and 4). Pusher 4-9 is a U- shaped member including base plate 5% and side plates 51 attached thereto by screws 52. The longitudinal axis of pusher 4% which extends parallel to its length overlies and is substantilly parallel to the line of travel of the center portion of the group of bottles. Openings 53 are provided in base plate 56* in alignment with bottles 14 and having a sufficient internal diameter so that no interference can occur between base plate 56 and the top portion 54 of bottles 113 when pusher 49 is in its lowest position. Pusher plates 55 and 56 are employed to force top panel 23 downwardly with respect to bottles 11D so that tabs 35 are deflected and fully engaged with portions 32 of bottles 10. Pressure plates 55 and 56 are supported by rods 57 which extend through openings 58 in base plate 51) and which contain nuts 59 at their outer end to limit their travel with respect to base plate 519. The mounting of pusher plates 55 and 56 is made resilient by the action of springs 611 so that the pressure plates cannot exert excessive force on the carton blank 15 or bottles 19. By extending between neck portions 32 of bottles 10, pressure plates 55 and 56 insure a complete and even application of top panel 28 of carton blank 15 to bottles 10. As pusher 49 descends, sloping surfaces 61 of side plates 51 contact the outer portions of top panel as and deflect them about intermediate fold line 38 into place along bottles 11). As pusher 49 continues to force carton blank 15 down over bottles 10 (FIG. 5), outer side plates 62 attached to side plates 51 by spacers 63 and screws 64, contact side panels 29 and force them down along the side portions of bot'les 11 Outer side plates 62 may be deflected cutwardly away from one another in order to engage side panels 29 gradually as it folds them inwardly toward bottles ltl.
Pusher 49 is driven by means of rod 65 attached to base plate 511 by screw 66. Rod 65 is in turn attached to link d7 by screws 66a. Link 67 is attached by pivots 68 and 69 to rod 71 and arms 71. Arms 71 are clamped to shaft 72 by the tightening action of screws 73. Shaft 72 is supported by bearing 74 mounted in frame members 47. Rod 719 completes a parallel linkage including link 67 and arms 71, by being attached by pivot 75 and spacer 76 to support 77. Support 77 is held by screws 78 to bracket 79 which is attached to frame member 81?. The parallel linkage is driven by cam 81 attached to shaft 44, through roller follower 82 attached to arm 33 by pivot 84., and finally through the attachment of' arm 83 to shaft 72 by set screw 85. Cam follower 82 is pre-loaded against cam 81 by means of lever 86, attached to shaft 72 by set screw 87. The pre-load moment to. cam follower 82.. is impartedto lever 8d by the tension of spring d8, which is attached to stud 89 at the free end of lever 36 and to bracket 90 on frame member 47.
Due to the parallel linkage construction formed by rod 70, link 67, arms 71, and rod 65, attached thereto, the pusher may be adjusted to be in a vertical position for all positions of the parallel linkage. Since rod 70 and arms 71 swing about their respective pivots, 'vertically disposed link 67 travels over a slightly curvilinear path which results in a slight back and forth motion of pusher 49 along a line parallel to the line of travel of the containers. By providing sufiicient length for rod 70 and arms 71, the amount of curvature is reduced to inconsequential proportions. Therefore the reciprocating motion of pusher 49 is substantially along a single vertical axis.
Operation As a further aid to the understanding of my invention, I shall describe the preferred sequence of operating steps.
Bottles 16 are delivered into the machine by container conveyor 11 and are subsequently segregated into groups for packaging by the action of primary and secondary stops 17 and 18, espectively. The carton blanks 15 are delivered into the machine by carton blank conveyor 21 which overlies container conveyor 11 and terminates above and adjacent segregating area 16 between primary and secondary stops 17 and 18, respectively. As carton blanks 15 advance along carton blank conveyor 21, rotating folders 41 fold the carton blank side panels 29 downwardly along the edges of carton blank conveyor 21.
To insure a positive descent of folded carton blank 15 upon bottles as folded carton blank passes beyond termination 24, vertically reciprocating pusher 49 bears upon top panel 28 and forces carton blank 15 downwardly into engagement with bottles 10 below. Conta'ner conveyor 11, carton blank conveyor 21, and pusher 49 are synchronized by mechanical drives so that a folded cartcn blank is deposited upon each group of bottles it as they are segregated. In the case where carton blank 15 is provided with openings 31 in top panel 28 said openings being adapted to engage the upper portions or necks of the bOftles ltl, pusher 49 may be adapted to complete the engagement of carton blank 15 with upper portions 32 of bottles. Pressure plates 55 and 5a resiliently attached to pusher 49 bear upon top panel 28 in the regions between upper portions 32 of bottes it) in order to comp ete the seating of the carton blank upon the bottles. Side pates 51 and outer side plates 62 of pusher 49 serve to form and fold top panel 233 and side panels 29 of carton blank 15 about the bottes so as to insure a tight package.
After carton blank 15 is forced into position upon bottles in segregated area 16, primary stops 17 are withdrawn from engagement with the bottles and carton blank 15, thereby permitting the groups to be conveyed forward by the action of conveyor chains 20. During the remainder of travel of the package through the machine closure panels 3% are positioned beneath the bottles and the locking of carton blank 15 is completed.
What is claimed is:
1. In a machine for packaging containers and the like in a wrap-around carton having a top panel, side panels, and bottom closure panels, said top panel having openings for engagement with the upper portions of said containers, means for delivering the containers into the machine, means for segregating the containers into groups to be packaged, means for delivering carton blanks into the machine, said carton blank delivering means terminating above and adjacent said segregating means, means for folding the carton blank side panels downwardly while said carton blanks are being delivered, said carton blanks dropping from the termination of said carton blank de- 6 livery means onto said groups of containers, means for forcing said carton blanks being delivered beyond the termination of said carton blank delivering means downwardly upon said groups of containers to enga' e the top panel openings with the upper portion thereof, and downwardly movable pressing members for bringing the sides of the carton blanks toward said containers as the carton blanks are moved downwardly by said forcing means, means for wrapping the carton blanks around the outside of the groups of containers, means for conveying the carton blanks and containers through the machine as a unit, and means for closing the carton blanks around the containers.
2. A machine in accordance with claim 1 in which said means for forcing the carton blanks upon the groups of containers includes pusher means disposed above said segregating means, parallel linkage means having two driving links connected to a vertically disposed driven link, said pusher means being attached to said driven link, and means for imparting reciprocatin motion to said parallel linkage in synchronization with said means for delivering said carton blanks, whereby said pusher means has a substantially vertically reciprocating motion.
3. A machine in accordance with claim 1 in which said means for forcing said carton blanks onto the groups of containers and into engagement with the upper portions thereof includes pusher means disposed above said segregating means and having a substantially vertically reciprocating motion.
4. A machine in accordance with claim 3 in which said pusher means includes an inverted U-shapcd member of predetermined length, the longitudinal axis of said member being parallel to said length and overlying and substantially parallel to the line of travel of the center portion of the groups to be packaged, said U-shaped member being adapted to straddle the upper portions of the containers whereby said U-shaped member descending forces the carton blank into engagement with the upper portions of the containers.
5. A machine in accordance with claim 4 in which said U-shaped member includes pressure plates resiliently attached thereto and adapted to bear upon said carton top panel and downwardly extending side plates attached thereto and adapted to engage said carton side panels and urge them against the sides of said groups or" containers.
6. In a machine for packaging containers and the like in a wrap-around carton having a top panel, side panels, and bottom closure panels, means for forcing the carton blank onto the containers to be packaged therein including a pusher means disposed above the containers and having a substantially vertically reciprocating motion, and
vertically reciprocating pressing members for bringing the sides of the carton blanks toward said containers as the carton blanks are moved downwardly by said forcing means.
7. in a machine for packaging containers and the like in a wraparound carton having a top panel, side panels, and bottom closure panels, said top panels having openings to receive the upper portion of the containers and tabs extending into said opening and adapted to engage said upper portions, means for forcing the carton blank onto the containers to be packaged therein to engage the tabs with the upper portions of the containers including an inverted U-shaped member of predetermined length, the longitudinal axis of said member being parallel to said length and overlying the line of travel of the center portion of the groups to be packaged, said U-shaped member being adapted to straddle the upper portions of the containers and to bear upon the top panel, said U-shaped member having openings to clear said upper portions, pressure plates resiliently attached thereto adapted to bear upon said top panel between said openings, and downwardly extending side plates attached thereto and adapted to urge the carton side panels against the containers.
8. In a machine for packaging containers and the like in a wrap-around carton having a top panel, side panels, and bottom closure panels, means for delivering the containers into the machine, means for segregating the containers into groups to be packaged, means for delivering the carton blanks into the machine, said carton blank delivering means terminating above and adjacent said segregating means, means for folding the carton blank side panels downwardly while said carton blanks are being delivered, means for forcing the carton blanks being delivered beyond the termination of said carton blank delivering means downwardly upon said groups of containers, and downwardly movable pressing members for bringing the sides of the carton blanks toward said containers as the carton blanks are moved downwardly by said forcing means, means for wrapping the carton blanks around the outside of the groups of containers, means for conveying the carton blanks and containers through the machine as a unit, and means for closing the carton blanks around the containers, said means for forcing the carton blanks upon the groups of containers including pusher means disposed above said segregating means and having a substantially vertically reciprocating motion, and said pusher means including a horizontally disposed plate adapted to bear upon the top panel of said carton and downwardly extending side plates attached to the opposite sides of said plate and adapted to urge the side panels of said carton blank downwardly against the containers to be packaged therein.
9. in a machine for packaging containers and the like in a wrap-around carton having a top panel, side panels, and bottom closure panels, means for deliver'ng the containers into the machine, means for segregating the containers into groups to be packaged, means for delivering the carton blanks into the machine, said carton blank delivering means terminating above and adjacent said segregating means, means for folding the carton blank side panels downwardly while said carton blanks are being delivered, means for forcing the carton blanks being delivered beyond the termination of said carton blank delivering means downwardly upon said groups of containers, and downwardly movable pressing members for bringing the sides of the carton blanks toward said containers as carton blanks are moved downwardly by said forcing means, means for wrapping the carton blanks around the outside of the groups of containers, means for conveying the carton blanks and containers through the machine as a unit, and means for closing the carton blanks around the containers, said means for forcing the carton blanks upon the groups of containers including pusher means disposed above said segregating means and having a substantially vertically reciprocating motion, and said pusher means including a horizontally dispose support member, pressure plates resiliently mounted on said support member and adapted to bear upon the top panel of the carton, and downwardly extending side plates attached to said support member and adapted to urge the side panels of said carton blank downwardly against the containers to be packaged therein.
10. In a machine for packaging containers and the like in a wrap-around carton having a top panel, side panels, and bottom closure panels, means for delivering the containers into the machine, means for segregating the containers into groups to be packaged, means for delivering the carton blanks into the machine, said carton blank delivering means terminating above and adjacent said segregating means, means for folding the carton blank side panels downwardly while said carton blanks are being delivered, means tor forcing the carton blanks being delivered beyond the termination of said carton blank delivering means downwardly upon said groups of containers, and downwardly movable pressing members for bringing the sides of the carton blanks toward said containers as the carton blanks are moved downwardly by said forcing means, means for wrapping the carton blanks around the outside of the groups of containers, means for conveying the carton blanks and containers delivered, means for through the machine as a unit, and means for closing the carton blanks around the containers, said means for forcing the carton blanks upon the groups of containers including pusher means disposed above said segregating means, parallel linkage means having two driving links connected to a vertically disposed driven link, said pusher means being attached to said driven link, and means for imparting reciprocating motion to said parallel linkage in synchronization with said means for delivering said carton blanks, whereby said pusher means has a substaatially vertically reciprocating motion.
11. In a machine for packaging containers and the like in a wrap-around carton having a top panel, side panels, and bottom closure panels, said top panel having openings to receive the upper portions of the coutainers and a plurality of tabs extending across said openings and adapted to engage the upper portion of the containers, means for delivering the containers into the machine, means for segregating the containers into groups to be packaged, means for delivering the carton blanks into the machine overlying said container delivering means and terminating adjacent said segregating means, means for folding the carton blanks side wall panels downwardly while said carton blanks are being forcing said carton blanks down upon said groups of containers to engage said carton blank tabs with the upper portions of the containers, and downwardly-movable pressing members for bringing the sides ofthe carton blanks toward said containers as the carton blanks are moved downwardly by said forcing means, means for wrapping the carton blanks around the outside of the groupsof containers, means for conveying the carton blanks and containers through the machine as a unit, and means for closing the carton blanks around the containers, said means for forcing said carton blanks down upon said groups to engage the carton blank tabs with the upper portions of the containers including pusher means disposedabove said segregating means and having a substantially vertically reciprocating motion, and pressure plates resiliently mounted on said pusher means and adapted to bear upon the portions of the top panel adjacent the top panel openings.
12. A machine in accordance with claim 11 in which said pusher means includes an inverted lJ shaped met ber of predetermined length, the longitudinal axis of said member being parallel to said length and overlying the line of travel of the center portion of the groups to be packaged, said U-shaped member being adapted to straddle the upper portions of the container and to bear upon the top panel, said U-shaped member having openings to clear said upper portions, pressure plates resiliently attached thereto adapted to bear upon said top panel between said openings, and downwardly extending side plates attached thereto and adapted to urge the carton side panels against the containers.
13. 1.
