WHIFFLETREE HOOK. No. 306,838. PatentedOct. 21, 1884.
WITNES$BS INVENTOR .1. @WM. 4
ATTORNEYS IGNAZ KOHN, OF NEWV YORK, N. Y.
WHlFFLETREE-HOOK.
forming part of Letters Patent No. 306,838, dated October 21, 1884.
' Application filed March 2'7, 1884. (No model.)
To a whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, IGNAZ KoHN, of the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Trace-Holders for W'hiftletrees, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to an improved traceholder for whiffletree by which the traces can be quickly applied to and detached from the tree; and the invention consists of a socket secured to the end of the whiffletree, and having a transverse slot with notched, ends, and of a spring-actuated bolt guided in said socket and provided with a pin that slides in the transverse slotof the socket. The springbolt is provided with an exterior T-shaped head, which serves to hold the trace.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents avertical central section of a whittletree with myiinproved trace-holder attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a side view of the traceholder on a larger scale, with a part broken oit'. Fig. 3 is an end View of the same, and
Fig. 4 a vertical transverse section on line mm,
Fig. 3.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A in the drawings represents a whiffletree, into a mortise at the end of which the socket B of the trace-holder Ois secured by a transverse pin, 1). the pin passing through a transverse hole, I), at the inner end of the socket B. The socket B is provided with an annular rim, If, at the outer end, that is flush with the end of the whiftletree. The socket B has a transverse slot,'d, which is provided with rests or notches d at both ends. The shank O of the trace-holder G isinserted into the socket B, the inner end of the shank being of less thickness, so as to permit the interposition of a spiral spring, 0, between the fastening-pin b and shoulder of the shank O, as shown in Fig. 2. A pin, (i is rigidly secured into the shank O, and guided by transverse slot (2 when the trace-holder O is turned on its axis. The slot (1 is made of such length so that the trace-holder can be turned through an angle of ninety-degrees. The trace-holder C has at its outer end an enlarged T-shaped head, over which the slit ted end of the trace D is slipped when the head is placed in line with said slit. As soon as the trace is slipped on the shank G the Tshaped head of the trace-holder O is turned into a po sition at right angles to the slit of the trace, whereby the pind is passed along the slot 01, and retained by the rest or notch d at'the opposite end otthe same.
The trace-holder is made up ready for immediate application to new or old whiffletrees, and forms aeonvenient device for attaching or detaching the traces to and from the same.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desi re to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of awhiffletree, A, a guide-socket, B, inserted into the end of the whiftletree, said guide-socket having a transverse slot, (Z, and end notches, d, atransverse fastening-pin, b, and a trace-holder, C, having an enlarged head, C, shank G, and guide-pin d, and a spiral spring, 0, interposed between the inner end of the shank O and the pin 1), substantially'as set forth.
2. A trace-holder for whiffletrees, consisting of a guidesocket, B, having a transverse slot,
(1, and end notches, d, and of a spring-actu
