SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 306,706, dated October 14, 1884.

To all 1071,0112, it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN YULE, of WVhitehall, in the county of Vashington and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Head-Block for Baling-Presses, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the head-blocks for perpetual balling-presses; and the object of my invention is to prevent the head-blocks from falling over and being broken when inserted in the baling-box.

The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a front View of my improved head-block, parts being broken out. Fig. 2 is an edge view. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the friction-dogs.

The head-block is formed of a series of transversely-placed boards, A, secured on a board or frame, B, the ends of the boards A projecting beyond the side edges of the board or frame B, and between-the said projecting ends upright metal bars 0 are held against the side edges of the board or frame B. A dog, D, having jaws E on the inner surface at the lower end, is pivoted to each bar 0, the dog being provided with longitudinal lugs or 5 jaws F 011 the inner surface, extending from the bottom to the top, and increasing in depth at the top. They serve as guides for the dogs. At the upper ends the dogs are provided on the outer surfaces with cross-pieces G. To the inner surface of each jaw a spring, H, is secured at the lower end, the upper slightlybeut end of the spring resting against the oiiter edge of the corresponding bar 0. Thereby the dogs are inclined outward from the lower to the upper ends, the lugs or jaws F being on opposite sides of the bar 0 and between the said strip and the projecting parts of the boards A. I

Any kind of spring may be used, and may be arranged in any-desired manner, but must always be above the middle of the block.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- B, of the dogs D, pivoted thereto at their lower ends above the center, and a spring for forcing the upper ends outward.

2. The combination, with a head-block, of the dogs D, pivoted on the side edges of the same, and provided on the inner surfaces with lugs F, and of the springs H, for pressing the upper or free ends of the dogs outward, substantially as hereinshown and described.

3. In a baling-press head-block, the dog D, formed with perforated ears E at its lower end, and guide-lugs F at its upper end, substantially as set forth.

4. The head-block herein described, the same consisting of the frame B, transverse boards A, extending beyond the edges of said frame, upright bars 0, secured between said extended ends, and the dogs D, formed with perforated ears E,guide-fianges F, and crossbar G, and the spring H, secured at its lower end to the lower end of the dogs to press their upper ends outward, substantially as set forth.
