No. 858,239 3 Claims. (Cl. 112-137) This invention relates in general to adjustable binder apparatus for sewing machines and has specific reference to improvements in devices of this character.
The object of this invention is to provide a binder apparatus, by means of which binding material, such as tape of various widths, can be easily and quickly sewed to a material such as cloth.
It is another object of this invention to provide a binder apparatus having guide means that can be easily adjusted for binding material of different widths.
Other features and advantages of this invention will appear as the following description proceeds with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:
FIGURE 1 is a plan view showing a conventionaltype binder apparatus;
FIGURE 2 is a plan view of a binder apparatus according to this invention;
FIGURE 3 is an exploded elevational view of the binder apparatus shown in FIG. 2;
FIGURE 4 is a detail view of a port-ion of the apparatus;
FIGURE 5 is a perspective view of the apparatus according to the invention; and
FIGURE 6 is a cross-sectional view taken along line VIVI of FIGURE 5.
As clearly shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 of the drawing, a binder apparatus for sewing machine comprises, according to the conventional practice, a needle plate 1 formed with slots 1a permitting the passage of the claw (not shown), and an assembly 2 movable with respect to said plate, which comprises a tape or bias inlet horn 3.
In conventional apparatus the tape is introduced into the horn 3 at the rear end thereof, the horn dimensions being subordinate to the width of the tape to be used. Therefore, it is necessary to provide as many binder apparatus as there are tape widths.
\AS the mounting of this apparatus is attended by the replacement of the needle plate (of which it constitutes a companion part), the claw and the resser-foot, in spite of the relative simplicity of these operations the switchover from one tape width to another is attended by an idle period of the machine which constitutes a loss of time for the operator.
It has also been proposed to provide within the horn guide means the convergence of which can be modified at will by means of a trapezoidal cam.
Now these contrivances provide only a partial solution to this problem for the outlet end of the horn has a constant width and therefore the tape will frequently position itself in a unforseeable and undefined manner therein.
Binder apparatus are also known wherein the tape is delivered thereto in a direction at right angles to the horn axis, the shape and size of the tape at the outlet end is modified at will be displacing the outlet nozzle in relation to the horn. Nevertheless, the results obtained with this apparatus are as objectionable as those obtained with the preceding one, since the tape is not properly guided until it leaves the horn.
If we compare FIG. 2, showing the binder apparatus of this invention, with FIG. 1 showing a conventional binder apparatus, it will be seen that the former differ from the latter by the horn design.
As a matter of fact, the flattened hollow guide member or horn 3 forming a one-piece funnel in the case of said conventional-type binder apparatus, consists, in this invention, of at least two elements and, more advantageously, of three elements, namely the inlet horn proper and a pair of half-nozzles or channels 4a, 4b angularly adjustable with respect to the born 3 due to the provision of screw-threaded tie-rods 5 co-acting with nutforming thimbles 6 retained against longitudinal displacement by an abutment-forming lug 3a rigid with the horn 3.
This horn 3 comprises an integral front portion in the form of a plate 30 formed with a rib 3b the rounded cross-sectional shape of which, subordinate to the desired folding of the tape, decreases toward the inlet and extends along about one-half of the horn length on the narrower end thereof, the axis of said rib being substantially coincident with the longitudinal axis of symmetry of said horn.
As in most conventional binder apparatus, this rib 3b is formed with a notch 3e at the outlet end to permit the change of direction of the tape (at In the case of a double binding operation, this rib will constitute with the half-nozzles 4a, 41; adjacent to the outlet end a section substantially similar to a small omega (Greek alphabet), but with the tips of the outer arms relatively close. This horn portion is covered by concave folding shoes 7 forming part of the aforesaid elements 4a 4b, said shoes each being rigid on the one hand with the aforesaid tie-rods 5 and on the other hand with a resilient slightly twisted blade 8 positioned inside the horn 3. Thus, the two blades 8 constitute the tape folding guides.
It will be readily understood that while the conventional binder apparatus of FIG. 1 requires the same number of devices as there are tape widths, the device according to this invention is suitable for handling tapes differing in width within reasonable limits.
To this end, the operator has simply to adjust the posi tion of the elements 4a and 4b relative to the horn 3 in order to alter the shape and more particularly the width of the passage provided between the plate 30 and rib 3b and the blades 8.
In order to cause the movements of the elements 4a and 4b to take place regularly, the back portion of the shoe is threaded through a slot formed between the plate 3c and a half-tubular extension 3d of the horn 3.
Of course, various modifications may be brought to the single form of embodiment of the invention which is shown and described herein, without departing from the spirt and scope of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
What I claim as new is:
l. A binder apparatus for sewing machines comprising a generally elongated flattened hollow guide member having a relatively wide mouth at one extremity thereof adapted to receive a binder tape and a relatively narrow throat provided with an opening at the other extremity of that member adapted to dispense the tape, said guide member having a longitudinal axis and being provided with a longitudinal internal ridge of progressively increasing height extending from an intermediate portion of said member toward said other extremity, a pair of opposed inwardly concave folding shoes located at said extremity and bordering said opening, adjusting means for independently displacing each of said shoes in a generally longitudinal direction inclined to said axis for adjusting the cross section area of said opening, and a resilient guide blade respectively secured to each of said shoes while extending within said guide member for deflecting said tape therewithin.

A binder apparatus for sewing machines comprising a generally elongated flattened hollow guide member having a relatively wide mouth at one extremity there- 1- 3 of adapted to receive a binder tape and a relatively 'narrow throat provided with an opening at the other extremity'of'that member'adapted' to dispense the tape, said guide member having a longitudinal axis and being provided with a longitudinal'internal ridge of progressively.
increasing height extending from an intermediate portion of'said member toward said other extremity, a pair of opposed inwardly concave folding shoes located at said extremity and bordering said opening, adjusting means for independently displacing each of said shoes in a generally longitudinal direction inclined to said axis for adjusting the.cr-oss section area of said opening, and a resilient guide blade respectively secured to each of said shoes while extending within said guide member for defl'ecting said tape therewithin, said adjusting means comprisinga rod rigidly secured to each of said shoes, each of said rods having a threaded extremity inclined to said axis and extending in the direction of said one extremity ofsaid member, and a thimbl'e'rotatably journaled to said a member threadedly engaging each of said rods.
3. A binder apparatus for sewing machines comprising a generally elongated flattened hollow guide member having a relatively wide mouth at one extremity thereof adapted to receiveva binder tape and a relatively nartremity of that memberadapted to dispense the tape, said guide member being provided with a longitudinal internal ridge of progressively increasing height extending from an intermediate portion of said member toward said other extremity, a pair of opposed-inwardly concave folding shoes located atsaidi extremity and bordering; said opening, adjusting means for independently displacing each of said shoes-in agenerally longitudinal direction for adjusting the cross-section area of said opening, and a resilient guide blade respectively secured to' each of said shoes while extending within said guide member for defleeting said tape therewithin.
