((11. filth-29) This invention relates to distributors for internal combustion engines, and more particularly to an improved adjustable assembly plate adapted to rotate with the distributor shaft and having a plurality of resilient point carrying arms for successively engaging the single contact member leading to the high tension coil.
One object of the present invention is to provide a distributor of the above nature which will accurately retain its setting at all times, and will reduce ignition failure due to burnt out points.
A further object is to provide a device of the above nature which will be simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, easy to install, adjust and manipulate compact ornamental in appearance and very etficient and durable in use.
With these and other objects in view, there has been illustrated on the accompanying drawing, one form in which the invention may conveniently be embodied in practice.

FIG. 4 is a horizontal cross-sectional view of the same, taken along the line 44 of FIG. 3, looking downwardly.
FIG. 5 is a vertical sectional view of the single contact member leading to the high tension coil, taken on the line 5-5 of FIG. 2.
Referring now to the drawing, in which like reference numerals denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral indicates a distributor shaft grounded to the engine body and having an intermediate hexagonal cam section 11 for non-rotatably fitting within a hexagonal metallic socket 12 having an enlarged upper cylindrical section 13 provided with a top flange 14 having a pair of opposed vertical holes 15, 16 for receiving a pair of headed screws 17, 18.
The shaft 10 has an ppper reduced cylindrical section 10a which is provided with a vertical keyway 10b which interfits with a key 10c of a standard insulating rotor 21 having a horizontal arm 22 on which is the usual rigid support 23 for an overlying flexible movable arm 24, having a rounded contact 25 which is located within a distributor cap (not shown) connected to the six spark plugs of an internal combustion engine. The distributor shaft 10 and the parts of the distributor are enclosed within a housing 26, within which is located the usual condenser 27.
Mounted on top of the flange 14 of the hexagonal socket 12, provision is made of a circular rotatable metallic assembly plate 28 having six equally spaced radial flexible arms 29, each of which is provided with a depending beveled long wearing cylindrical point 30, said points having reduced upper necks and heads 31 which are riveted upon the tops of the arms 29. The plate 28 also has a pair of opposed arcuate slots 28a, within which are adjustably located the pair of vertical screws 17, 18 threaded into the holes 15, 16 of the flange 14 (FIG. 1).
Provision is also made or" a single beveled vertical contact cylindrical head 32, which is connected to a vertical strip 33, having an open bottom slot 34 for receiving a horizontal headed binding screw 35 which is adapted to pass out through the housing 26, as clearly shown in FIG. 2 of the drawing.
The outer end of the screw 35 is connected by means of an insulated conductor 36 to the high tension coil of the internal combustion engine, said conductor 36 being held in place by a nut 37. The headed section of the screw 35 is also connected by a conductor 38 to the condenser 27.
Operation In operation, it will be seen that as the distributor shaft it rotates, the six flexible spring arms 29 will successively engage the single contact point 32. The pair of arcuate slots 28:: on the assembly plate 28 serve to permit simultaneous adjustment of the six distributor points 36! carried by the radial arms 29 of the assembly plate 28 according to the particular octane gas being used. This construction results in a longer wear of the distributor points and allows easy replacement of the rotary assembly plate 28 when worn out, without replacing the entire distributor. This also permits more accurate timing of the sparks and the improved rotary multi-point assembly distributor plate may be readily attached to the standard rotor of most makes of automobiles.
A further advantage is that by providing the resilient arms of the assembly plate at the upper part of the distributor housing 26 there will be no interference with the condenser 27 or other interior parts of the mechanism.
While there has been disclosed in this specification one form in which the invention may be embodied, it is to be understood that this form is shown for the purpose of illustration only, and that the invention is not limited to the specific disclosure, but may be modified and embodied in various other equivalent forms without departing from its spirit. In short, the invention includes all the modifications and embodiments coming within the scope of the following claims.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new and for which it is desired to secure Letters Patent is:
1. In a distributor for an internal combustion engine, a metallic socket nonrotatably connected to a grounded distributor shaft and having an upper flange, a multiarm metallic distributor plate secured to said flange and carrying a plurality of radial resilient arms having contact members on their undersides for successively engaging a single vertical distributor contact located therebeneath and connected to the high tension coil of the ignition system.
2. The invention as defined in claim 1, in which said distributor plate is provided with a pair of arcuate slots for receiving a pair of screws to permit the angular adjustment of said plate with respect to said single contact.
