ful Improvement in Fishing-Reels, of which the following is a specification.

Fishing-reels have been made in which one or both plates or heads are of hard rubber or vuleanite, which forms a striking contrast to the highly-finished metal parts of the reel.

These plates or heads have been made wholly vulcanite, or other material of a contrasting of rubber or vulcanite with metal bushings for the spool-journals, and have sometimes been surrounded each by a metal band to add to its strength. Such reels are desirable because of their attractive appearance; but they are. not so strong as the reels which are made wholly of metal; and the object of my invention is to provide a reel which shall be as attractive in appearance as those above described, and which shall possess all the strength of a reel made wholly of metal.

To this end the invention consists in novel combinations of parts pointed out in the claims, including a novel construction," particularly hereinafter described, of one of the heads or plates of a reel and the cap which covers the multiplying gear, the same construction being applicable to both heads or plates in a nonmultiplying reel.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a sectional view of a reel embodying my invention, the multiplying gear being omitted, as it forms no part of the invention; and Fig. 2 is a sectional view of one of the heads or plates of the reel, and an ornamental panel thereof detached therefrom.

The frame of the reel is composed of the usual partsna1 nely, the heads or plates AB,

The plates or heads A B are recessed on their inner sides, so as to form cavities b, for the re ception of the edges of the flanges F. The

- plate or head A is also recessed on its outer side, so as to form aprojecting circular rim or bezel, 0, within which is fitted a panel, H, of

color and appearance, the edge of the panel being covered by the rim or bezel and a neat finish thereby afforded. As here shown, the plate or head A has an external hub, d, which forms an adequate bearing for the spool-journal. This hub may be formed integral with the plate or head; but when the plate or head is made of sheet or plate metal the said hub is made separately and soldered to the plate or head. The hub d is omitted in Fig. 2. The panel H has a central aperture, 0, for'said hub (l,- and f is a cap-nut screwed upon said hub (l and bearing on the outer side of the said panel. The recess or cavity 1) and rim or bezel may be formed by turning; but I prefer" to form the plate or head by striking it up with dies or by spinning, in which case the rim or bezel 0 will only require a slight turning or finish-' ing to make a sharp corner and edge adapted to hold the panel H. The panel may be securely held in place by the bezel c, or by the nutf, or by both said means. The cap 0 has in its outer side a recess forming a rim, lip, or bezel, c, which receives and retains a panel, H, similarv to the panel H, and made of vulcanite or other contrasting material. This cap may be produced by spinning or striking it up by means of dies, or it may be formed of thicker metal and turned.

I do not claim as of my invention a reel having its plates or heads composed of hard rubber or vulcanite bushed to "form bearings for the spool-journals,with or Without metal bands encircling the rubber or vnlcanite, the object of my invention being to provide a reel which shall equal in appearance one having plates or heads of rubber or Yulcanite, and which shall be far more durable and strong; neither do I claim, broadly, as of my invention a reel having a recess on its inner side to receive the spool-flange, and a hub on its outer side to form a bearing for the spool-journal. the said hub having a cap-nnt applied to it. Such a reel is shown in United States Letters Patent No. 214,495, granted April 22, 1879, to L. T. Dickson; but its plate orheadhasnopanel apl plied to its outer side, and having a central aperture through which said hub projects, nor has the plate or head any rim or bezel on its outer side to receive Within it such a panel as I employ; neither does the cap-nut serve the double purpose of covering the spool-journal and its bearing and securing a panel in place, as does my cap-nutf.

\Vhat I claim as my. invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a reel, the combination of the head A and the cap 0, recessed on their outer sideso as to form rims c, the head A comprising a bearing, d, for the spooljournal, and the panels H H applied to the recessed outer sides of said head and cap and fitting Within the rims c, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.

'2. In a reel, the combination of the spool F, the head A, having on its exterior the hub (l, forming a bearing for the said spool, and having the rim or bezel c, the panel H, fitting within the rim. or bezel c, and having a central aperture, through which the hub (Z projects, and the cap-nutf, applied to the hub d, and serving both to cover the latter and to secure the panel in place, substantially as herein described.
