Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS SIMONET, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
WATERPROOF FABRIC.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 30,593, dated November 6, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS SIMoNET, of the city of New York, State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Vaterproof varnished Cloth, and that the said cloth for which Letters Patent are prayed for in the preceding petition is manufactured as follows:
Take linseed oil, raw, of a pound; linseed oil, boiled, J, of a pound; ground plaster of paris, 1:1- pounds; ordinary alcohol, of a gallon; brown shellac, -gof a pound; bone black, of a pound.
These substances when well mixed in the usual mode to form a varnish can be readily applied as follows: Take a piece of cloth, muslin of good qualit being preferred, and soak it in the varnish, or cover it with the varnish by passing a soft brush over the same. The object is that the cloth should be well saturated with the varnish. After this take the cloth and pass it between two rollers, (ordinary wooden rollers will answer) the object of this being that all the seams and wrinkles may be efiaced and the cloth rendered perfectly even. As the cloth comes out from between the rollers, sprinkle it carefully and uniformly with fine flocks. This may be done by placing the flocks in a. sieve and shaking it over the cloth by hand or otherwise. After the cloth is well covered with flocks, hang it up by the borders or edges and leave it suspended at a height of about two feet from the floor for about eight days when it will be found perfectly dry and ready for use.
The advantages of the cloth as manufactured according to the above specification are, 1st, its cheapness; 2d, it is very durable and perfectly waterproof; 3d, it can be made into every object for which cloth is used. It is unequaled for hats, as it is as glossy as fine felt, more durable, waterproof.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is- The varnished waterproof cloth as described.
L. SIMONET. In presence of HENRY FERRIS, I. OSCAR STEVENS, L. LEoNoE COUDERT.
