CLOTHES-SPRINKLER.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 30,565, dated Njovember 6, 1860.

To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, SARAH N. DAvIns, of Muskegon, in the county of Muskegon and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Clothes-Sprinkler; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specication, in which- Figure l, shows a bottom view of the improved sprinkler, for clothes. Fig. 2, is a diametrical section through the sprinkler, showing the interior of the same.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.

This invention is a new and useful device for sprinkling or wetting clothes previously to ironing them. The sprinkling of clothes with the hand or with devices which have heretofore been employed, is attended with inconvenience and a loss of time, which my invention is intended to remedy.

It consists in combining with a cylindrical bellows, small enough to be conveniently used with one hand, a Siphon shaped tube, and a small barrel with a hole in one end, which hole is stopped by a simple valve when a pressure is put upon the bellows, the end of which barrel is finely perforated, around the central hole, for allowing the water to issue from the barrel in fine jets or spray, as will be hereinafter described.

To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand my invention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.

A, A, are two circular heads, and B, is the waterproof fabric which connects the heads A, togetherl forming a bellows of a cylin- The size of said bellows is some three or four inches, more or less, and it may contain a half pint or more of water. It should be small enough for a lady to conveniently manage in one hand.

C, is a siphon shaped tube one end of which is tightly secured through one of the bellows heads A, as shown in Fig. 2, and to the other end of the tube C, is secured a tubular block D, with a cylindrical neck a, on which s tightly placed a hollow barrel or cup G, with a hole b, through the center of its lower end which hole is closed by a simple cork valve H, which is a square piece of cork placed within the barrel G, and allowed to play up and down inethis barrel.

Surrounding the circular hole l), in the end of the barrel G, are fine perforations, through which water can escape in fine spray, when the bellows is compressed.

The lower end of the cork valve should be nicely out so that no water can escape from the barrel through the hole which the valve is intended to close; and in order that this cork valve H, should notclose any of the fine perforations through the end of the barrel the lower end of the cork H, has a short circular portion c, formed on it, as shown in Fig. 2 which closes the central hole and projects from the end of the cork suliiciently to allow water to pass through the small perforations.

The operation of this sprinkler is as follows: The end of barrel G, is placed in a dish of water when the bellows is compressed with the hand, then on relieving the bellows it will swell out and ill itself with water, which water will rush up through the valve hole b, and through pipe C, then on compressing the bellows again the valve H, will close the orifice in consequence of the pressure of water above it and the water will rush down the sides of the cork and be forced through the perforations in the end of barrel H, in the shape of fine spray.

It will be seen that this sprinkling device may be laid down on a table when it is not in immediate use and that the water will not run out from the bellows.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

The combination, with a suitable bellows, of the siphon tube C, and the barrel G, with its perforated end, orifice l), and valve H, arranged and operating as and for the purposes herein set forth.
