DATING STAMP.
No. 305,513." Patented Sept`.23,"18i84.
4 UNITED STATES l VILLIAM E. DE LAP, OF BOSCOBEL, VISOONSIN.
DATING -STAM P.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 305,513, dated September 23, 1884.-.
Application filed March 12, 1883. Renewed June 2, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. DE LAP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boscobel, in the Vcounty of Grant and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in DatingStamps; and I do declare the`following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such, as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had'to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and gures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to handstamps, and is designed for use in postofces and such other places as require canceling and dating stamps.
The invention consists in certain improve-4 ments in the construction of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figiire 1 is a vertical side view of my stamp. Fig. 2 is a section of Fig. l on the line x x. Fig.` 3 is a plan view of the bottom of the stamp. Figs.'4, 5, and 6 are side and edge views of the dating-wheels, denoting, respectively, the years, days of the month, and months.
Like letters indicate like parts in the several views.
Theletter A indicates the handle of the stamp. 4
B is a metal case, secured by ordinary methods to the handle A, Theiease B has three holes passing through from side to side to receive the checl pin E, the pivot J, and the screws d d. It has also shallow threaded holes for securing to it, by the screws e e, the plate K, which guardsthe springcatch F. An arm of the case B is provided to hold firmly the thimble C, 'in which is placed the cancelingsurface C.
' D is a removable annular plate, having-the shoulders d d, by means of which, with the screws d d', it is fixed to the bottom of the case B. Upon this plate D is put, for postofce uses, the naine of the postofice and State.
The wheels G, H, and I have the central pivot-holes, G', H', and I', and the smaller holes g h i', at the proper distances apart, into which the check-pin E may pass. The edges of these wheels have flat surfaces bearing the characters to beimpressedbythe stamp. Vhen in operative position the date-bearing surfaces-one on each plate-are in the plane of the surface or" the plate Dand of the cancel 55 ling-surface C', as shown in Figs. l and 3.
The check-pin E hasa shoulder, e', (see Fig. 2,) by which it is stopped against the plate K. It also has the beveled annular'proi jeetion e, the beveled side being toward the 6c point of the piu E. The catch F is secured at one end under the plate K, its outer end Working right and left ina recess in K. On pushing in the pin F, the projection e strikes the spring-catch F and forces it aside as the 'pin goes in. IVhen the pin is in its place, the catch F is forced by its spring, against the pin E, back of the projection e, and retains the pin in position. To remove the pin, push the catch aside and the pin is easily 4with- 7c drawn.
Having now described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. In adating-stamp, the combination, with the case B, having suitable holes in its respective sides and an annular plate, D, of the centrally-pivoted dating-wheels, G H I, having holes g h i', one opposite to each date or separate matter upon the rim of the re- 8( spective wheels, the check-pin E,having shoulder e' and beveled angular projection e, spring-catch F, and recessed plate K, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In adating-stamp, the combination, with the case B, having suitable holes in its respective sides to receive the check-pin E, of the datingwheels G HI, having a series ot' holes, g 7L' i', extending circuinferentially around each wheel, one opposite to or in line 9 with each of the characters or words upon the respective wheels, the check-pin E, havingfM" shoulder c and inwardly-beveled annular projection e, and adapted to pass through saidp holes g h e, for the purpose of locking said dating-wheels, the recessed plate K, and the spring 'catch F, pivotally secured within said plate K, and adapted to automatically engage with the check-pin E, between the shoulder e and projection e thereon, substantially as and n for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
