(Cl. 206-52) This invention relates to :1 rolled tape holding and dispensing carton. More particularly, this invention relates to such a carton utilizing a spool for holding rolls of tape, the spool being mounted within the side walls of the carton.
Many types of tape holders and dispensers are presently in existence which utilize a central spool for holding a roll of tape, the spool being formed from portions of the side walls of the carton. Many tape dispensers of this type do not exhibit sufiicient strength for holding heavy rolls of tape. Further, dispensers of this type usually are not adapted to facilitate wide rolls of tape. Also, such dispensers are not readily adapted for mounting more than one roll of tape on the spool, this often being advantageous when more than one color or size of tape must be readily available for use.
Tape dispensers presently in existence which utilize a separate spool apparatus exhibit neither the necessary strength required nor the simplicity of construction necessary for fabricating and assembling a practical tape dispensing carton. They are clumsy in appearance and difiicult to erect and often fall apart when tape is removed therefrom.
It is therefore an object of this invention to provide a rolled tape holding and dispensing carton utilizing a very practical means for holding a separate spool within the carton.
Another object of this invention is to provide such a carton which is especially well adapted to facilitate either a wide roll of tape or a plurality of rolls of tape of various sizes and colors.
Another object of this invention is to provide such a carton which exhibits great strength and durability, the structure being such that it may be used repeatedly when new rolls of tape are placed therein.
Still another object of this invention is to provide such a carton including means for facilitating the removal of tape from the roll mounted within the carton.
An additional object of this invention is to provide such a carton through the utilization of an absolute minimum of material. 7
A still further object of this invention is to provide such a carton which may be simply and quickly erected from a generally flat blank.
These and other objects of this invetnion will become obvious to those skilled in the ta e dispensing art upon reading the following specification together with the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Briefly, this invention relates to a rolled tape holding and dispensing carton including four upstanding side walls joined along hinge lines. Portions of each of an opposite pair of these side walls lie outside of the plane passing through this pair of side Walls. This pair of side walls is adapted to engage a side of a roll of tape. A cylindrically shaped spool of a length greater than the distance between the opposite pair of side walls just described is mounted within the carton. The ends of the spool engage the portions lying outside of the plane described, forming bearings in the side walls, the spool thereby being rotatably received the side walls of the carton.
in one embodiment of this invention, the portions lying outside of the planes passing through an opposite pair of side walls are partially severed therefrom. These porticns include an enlarged middle section and a pair of connecting strips joining the middle sections to the 0pposite pair of side walls. The spool thus engages these enlarged middle sections, thereby being rotatably received within the opposite pair of side Walls.
In the other embodiment of this invention, each of a pair of opposite side walls are formed to include at least double panel thickness. The inner panels have openings therein which receive the ends of the spool member, the ends of the spool member engaging the outer panels.
Referring more specifically to the drawings, the reference numeral 1 designates a blank for forming one embodiment of this invention. Blank 1 includes four contiguous side wall panels 2, 3, 4 and 5 joined together along the folding hinge lines 6, 7 and 8 respectively. An attachment flap 9 is joined to panel 5 along the fold line It). A serrated strip 11 may be secured at the top of side wall panel 4 to facilitate the tearing of tape as it is removed from the carton.
Portions 15 are partially severed from each of a pair of alternate side walls 3 and 5. Each portion 15 is severed from its respective side wall along the lines 1-3 and 14. Each portion 15 includes an enlarged generally circular middle section 16 and a pair of connecting strips 17 and 18. Each connecting strip 17 and 18 is joined to the blank at the fold lines 6, 7, 8 and 1%} which join the side walls of the erected carton together. A noncircu-lar area is struck from the center of each of the middle sections 16 of portions 15 forming openings 20 therein.
Turning to FIG. 2, a perspective View of the carton erected from the blank of FIG. 1 is shown. The side walls 2, 3, 4 and 5 are folded along the lines 6, 7 and 18 and theattachment flap It is secured to side wall 2 by suitable means such as gluing. A spool member 25,
referably cylindrically shaped and fabricated of paperboard exhibiting proper strength, is provided for insertion within the side walls 3 and 5 of the erected carton. The spool member 25 is of a length greater than the distance between the side walls 3 and 5 of the erected carand 5 due to the length of the spool 25. The portions 15 limit axial movement of the spool 25 and form bearings for the spool within the side walls of the carton. The spool is thus held firmly in place within an opposite pair of side walls, the spool being rotatable therein. A roll of ltape'Tiis mounted on the spool 25 and a member (not shown) may be inserted through the openings 20, passing through the hollow spool 25, for holding the carton steady so that tape may be removed from the roll and torn by means of the'serra-ted strip 11 through the use of only one of the operators hands.
The blank may be erected into a carton by the simple step of attaching flap to sidewall 2. Turning specifically to FIG. '4, the reference numeral designates. a blank for forming another modification of the carton comp-rising this invention. Blank 30 is shown to include eight panels, arranged in two tiers A and B of four panels each, Tier A includes inner wall panel 31, side wall panel 32, outer wall panel 33 and inner wall panel 34 joined together side to side along the fold lines 35, 36 and 37 respectively. Tier B includes inner wall panel 4%, outer wall panel 41, side wall panel 42 and inner wall panel 43 joined successively together along the fold lines 44, 45 and 46 respectively. Adjacent inner wall panels 31 in tier A and 40 in tier B are joined together at their bottom and top respectively along the'fold line 48. Adjacent inner wall panels 34 in tier A and '43 in tier B are joined together at their bottom and top' respectively along the fold line 49.
A circular area is cut from generally the center of each of the inner wall panels 31, 34, 40 and 43 forming the openings 50 in each inner wall panel. Non-circular areas are cut :Erom each of the outer Wall panels 33 and 41 forming the openings 52 therein. A serrated edge 60 is attached to the outer free edge of the side wall panel 42 in tier B for facilitating the removal of tape from the carton after it is erected and assembled. v
A carton is erected from the blank '30 as follows. Inner wall panels 31 and 40, joined'together along the fold line 48, are folded about the lines and 44 respectively to lie on side wall panel 32 and outer wall panel 41. Inner wall panels 34 and 43, joined together along the fold line 49, are folded about the lines 37 and 46 respectively to lie on outer wall panel 33 and side wall panel 42. The blank as thus folded is shown in FIG. 5, The blank 30 is next folded about the lines 48 and 49, placing innerwall panels 31 and in face to face relationship and inner wall panels 34 and 43 in face to face relationship. FIG. 6 shows the blank after completion of this step.
' Upon applying pressure to the sides of the blank 30 7 as shown in FIG.'6, a four walled carton may be formed since side wall panel 32 and outer wall panel 33 are not connected to outer wall panel 41 and side wall panel numeral N. The innerwall panels M and N of double thickness are then pivoted in the direction'of the arrows shown in. FIGI7 and attached by suitable means such as gluingto the. outerwall panels 41' and 33 respectively. This completes the erectionof the carton from theblank so; It should be noted that additional inner wall panels with openings therein could be provided at the sides of blank 30 without departing from the spirit and scope of of panels positioned above the smaller of said center 1 this invention. The inner panels M be of additional thickness.
A perspective view of the carton so erected is shown in FIG. 8. It will be noted that two of the side walls of 7 this carton are of triple panel thickness, one of these sides including the outer wall panel 41 together with the inner panel M of double thickness and the other including outer wall panel 33 together with the inner panel N of double thickness; The openings 50 extending completely through inner panels M and N thus'form recesses in each of these multiple thickness sidewalls.
Turning to FIG. 9, a completely assembled carton is shown. A spool member 25a, similar to the spool member 25 described hereinbefore, is inserted' between the multiple thickness side walls of the carton. The spool 25a is of a length greaterthan the distance between the double thickness inner panels M and N. Thus, the
ends of the spool 25a extend into the recesses formed by the openings 50 and forming bearingsin the side walls, the ends of the spool engaging the outer wall panels 41 and 33. The spool is thus mounted for rotation within these side walls. A member (not shown) may be in serted into the openings 52, extending through thespool 25a for facilitating the removal of tape from the carton with only the use of one hand. The carton is especially well adapted to hold rolls of tape of various sizes and shapes, three rolls T T and T being shown in phantom in FIG. 9';
It will now be noted that this invention has disclosed a rolled tape holding and dispensing carton utilizing a separate, sturdy rotatable spool for the tape therein. This carton is especially stable and durable. The amount of material utilized is minimal since the blanks are coinpletely rectangular. The carton is especially well adapted to receive wide rolls of tape or to receive a plurality of rolls of tape of various shapes and sizes. The carton erected from the blanks may be stored in a minimum of space. The erection of the cartons is quick and simple. Completion of assembly of the cartons requires only the insertion of the spool thereinto, the spool being held firmly for rotation within the carton. Means are also provided whereby tape may be removed iirom the carton, torn into strips of suitable length with the use of only one hand. e
While only certain embodiments of this invention have been shown, it may be possible to practice the same without departing from its spirit and scope through the use of other embodiments. Such other embodiments are to be included within the spirit and scope of this invention unless the following claims expressly state otherwise.
I claim: a
1. A blank for a rolled tape holder and dispenser, comprising: at least eight panels arranged in two tiers of at least four panels each, said panels in each of said tiers of panels joined together along fold lines and the end panels of each ofsaidtiersof panels joined together along fold lines; said end panels being of generally equal size and one of the center panels of each of said tiers of panels being slightly larger than the other of said center panels, the larger of said center panels of one of said tiers of panels positioned above the smaller of said center panels of the other said tiers of panels; and
openings struck from each of said end panels.
