(Cl. 159-52) This invention is a garment cover adapted particularly for the accommodation and protection of garments either in housing or travelling operations.

In travelling it is customary to enclose garments such as suits, coats, dresses, etc. in a garment bag or container for the protection of the garments against dust as Well as against wrinkling; these bags or containers usually comprising flexible rectangular sacks of proper length and breadth to accommodate a given number of articles to be housed upon coat or garment hangers arranged therein and having suspension hooks extending therefrom so that they may be hung or suspended from hooks within the travelling vehicle, such as automobile, train, steamer or within the closet of housing accommodations. These covers usually include an open side closed by a zipper fastener extending either part way or thoughout the length of the container to facilitate the application of garments upon their hangers to the interior of the container or their removal therefrom; when closed serving to seal the hanger against the ingress of dirt or dust. In instances where a number of garments are confined upon their hangers within the currently used containers, it is sometimes desired to remove one or more of the garments without disturbing those remaining, and in such instances where the desired garment is not the one disposed next to the zipper opening, it becomes necessary to remove those garments with their hangers which interfere with the removal of the desired garment. This practice is troublesome and timeconsuming and frequently results in wrinkling or creasing of the clothing, often requiring objectionable pressing operations.

The primary obiect of the present invention is to provide a garment container or bag of the general type to which reference is made, but so constructed and arranged as to enable a user to remove a desired garment, regardless of the position it may assume in the container, without disturbance of the others, meanwhile maintaining all other garments properly suspended within the container and obviating the objections heretofore mentioned.

A further object of the invention is to provide a garment container or cover of the kind or character generally stated which brings about complete sealing of the cover when in closed position, at the same time providing openings through which the hooked end of the contained garment hangers may project for proper suspension and support of the container and its contents.

With the fore oing objects in view, together with others which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all as will be described more fully hereinafter, illustrated in the drawings, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

The garment cover of my invention comprises a con- 3,034,552 Patented May 15, 1962 ice tainer formed of flexible material, such as cloth, rubber, leather, plastic or other material of a length sufficient to properly accommodate suits, coats, capes, dresses and other wearing apparel upon coat or garment hangers whose hooked ends 5 extend through the upper end of the container to afford means whereby the hangers and clothing enveloped by the container may be suspended. This cover in the present instance comprises a substantially rectangular container having front and rear sides represented at 6 and 7 respectively; a bottom 8 connecting the lower ends of the sides and a top 9 connecting its upper ends. The depth or thickness of the container may vary, but in the present instance is illustrated as relatively thin for the accommodation of possibly five or six separate hangers for the support of the garments.

The side panels 6 and 7 have their inner edges disposed in the longitudinal center of the sides and are connected by zippers 1t and 11; the zippers extending from the top to the bottom of each side as illustrated. The inner edges of the top sections 9 terminate in the longitudinal axis of the container to provide a gap, when the zippers are in closed position, through which the hanger hooks 5 of the contained hangers may extend.

The bag constructed as described provides means at both sides thereof whereby access may be had to the interior of the container from either side. By the provision of zippers in both sides of the bag, it is apparent that the user may have access to either side, which greatly facilitates the removal of a desired garment without disturbing other garments contained within the cover. Itis observed that the bottom of the container 3 is continuous whereby a proper seal is maintained, and the gap at the inner ends of the top sections 9, when the bag is closed, is sufficient only to permit the relatively small book members 5 to project therethrough for suspension purposes; an eifective seal thus being maintained at the top of the container.

in FIGS. 3 and 4 of the drawing there is illustrated a slight modification of the invention wherein the inner edges of the top sections 9 of the container are provided-with flexible locking tabs 12. These tabs may be formed of the material of which the garment container is made or may be separate layers of material, as here illustrated, stitched or otherwise rigidly secured to the top sections. The tabs 12 are each provided at their outer ends with socket members 13 for engagement with studs 24 on the opposite top section 9. It will be observed that the tabs 12 have their outer edges 15 terminating inwardly of the sides of the container to provide spaces or gaps 16 through which garment hanger hooks may be extended. Likewise, the adjacent edges of the oppositely directed locking tabs 12 are spaced from one another to provide between them a narrow gap 1 7 substantially midway the width of the container and through which other hanger hooks may be projected. By this construction it is apparent that with the hooks projected through the gap portions thus provided and with the stud and sockets of the snap fasteners rigidly secured, complete sealing of the upper end of the container is assured.

From the foregoing, it is apparent that the container will adequately accommodate a desired number of hangers with garments arranged thereon in proper position for travel, moving about or storage without danger of unnecessary wrinkling or creasing of the garments, and that they will be maintained against the ingress of dust or dirt so long as the zippers remain closed. In either form of the invention here disclosed, access may be had to the container from either side thereof for the purpose of removing a desired garment without disturbance of other garments therein contained. The development disclosed in FIGS. 3 and 4 of the drawing brings about a complete sealing of the upper end or top of the container, yet the structure is such that the tabs may be quickly and easily a a r 3,034,552

I claim:

1. A cover to receive hooks of garment hangers, comprising a container formed of flexible material having sides, ends, a bottom and a top, the said sides and top comprising sections having their inner ends meeting substantially midway the longitudinal center of the container and terminating at the top'and bottom respectively thereof, and zipper fasteners connecting said adjacent side ends extending throughout the length thereof and operating independently of one another in aflording access to said container, the adjacent edges of said top sections providing between them a gap through which garment hanger hooks may extend.

2. A garment cover comprising a container formed of flexible material having sides, ends, a bottom and a top, the said sides having their inner ends meeting substantially midway the longitudinal center of said container, the said top comprising sections having their inner ends terminating in the longitudinal center of said container, zipper fasteners connecting the said adjacent side ends and extending throughout the length thereof, locking tabs secured at their inner ends to the meeting edges of said top sections, and securing members on said top sections to be engaged by said tabs.

A garment cover comprising a container formed of flexible material having sides, ends, a bottom and a top, the said sides comprising sections having their inner ends meeting substantially midway the longitudinal center of r the container, the said top comprising sections having their inner ends terminating in the longitudinal center of said container, zipper fasteners connecting the said adjacent side ends and extending throughout the length thereof,

4' V locking tabs secured at their inner ends in spaced relationship to one another and projecting beyond said ends, and cooperating locking members on said tabs and said top sections to hold the same together. 7

A garment cover comprising a container formed of flexible material having sides, ends, a bottom and a top, the said sides comprising sections having their inner ends meeting in the longitudinal center of said container, the said top comprising sections having their inner ends terminating in the longitudinal center of said container, zipper fasteners connecting the said adjacent side ends and extending throughout the length thereof, locking tabs secured at their inner ends in spaced relationship to one another and projecting beyond said ends, said tabs also spaced inwardly from the lateral edges of said top sections, and cooperating locking members on said tabs and said top sections to hold the same together.

5. A cover to receive garment hangers, comprising a container having side sections, a continuous bottom and a top, said side sections and top having edges meeting in 'the longitudinal axis of said container with the side section edges extending throughout the entire depth of said container, zipper fasteners secured to the meeting edges of said sides and extending throughout the length of said edges, the meeting edges of said top affording between them an opening in the longitudinal axis of said container and transversely thereof through which garment hanger hooks may extend,
