' DAVIT Filed April 29, 1957 3 Sheets-Sheet 3 INVENTOR (Hflflif Awa e/7% BY Mm ATTORNEY United States Patent DAVIT r Charles Hollerith, Jackson, Mich, assignor to Walstrom Products, Inc., a corporation of Michigan Filed Apr. 29, 1957, Ser. No. 655,807 8 Claims. (Cl. 9-39) The present invention relates to improvements in davit structure used to support a dinghy, lifeboat or other similar small water craft from the deck of a larger boat or ship, and particularly to davit structure designed to be used at the stern.
It is an object of this invention to provide a davit so constructed as to follow the sheer line of the water craft and thus will not detract from the appearance of the water craft or interfere with the stern view.
Another object is to provide a davit for installation from the deck and transom of a boat as to distribute the load between the deck and transom and avoid damage to the deck or transom especially during a heavy sea.

Referring to the drawings,
FIG. 1 is a side elevational view of one form of davit shown applied to a forward sloping transom, with a dinghy shown in section,
FIG. 2 is a plan view of FIG. 1,
FIG. 3 is an enlarged detail view of the transom abutment structure shown in FIG. 1,
FIG. 4 isa view similar to FIG. 3 of a modified form of transom abutment structure,
FIGS. 5, 6 and 7 are cross-sectional views taken on line V-V, VIVI and VIIVII, respectively, of FIG.1,
FIG. 8 shows the davit of FIG. 1 applied to an outwardly sloping transom,
FIG. 9 is a view similar to FIG. 1 of a davit having a wooden beam and transom abutment stop shown applied to an outwardly sloping transom,
FIG. 10 is a view'showing the davit of FIG. 10 applied to a forwardly sloping transom,
FIG. 11 is a detail view of the gunwale plate and pin bracket, and
FIGS. 12 and 13 are enlarged details of the pulley block.
Referring to the drawings, in the form of the invention shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 my improved davit structure 10 is shown mounted on forwardly sloping transom 12 and supporting a dinghy 14.
Davit 10 preferably comprises a beam which comprises a cast aluminum main arm 16 and a cast aluminum extension 18. Arm 16 is shown forked for a substantial portion of length to provide parallel portions 20 and 22 having at their outer ends 23 longitudinally extending grooves 24 (see FIG. 7) in which longitudinally extending ribs 26 on the extension 18 are received. Extension 18 is longitudinally slotted at 28 through the ribs 26 to permit the extension 18 to be adjusted between the portions 20 and 22 to vary the overall length of the davit 10. Clamp bolts 30 located in holes in the portions 20 and 22 and extending through the slot hold the extension 18 in position of adjustment along the arm 16. At the outer end 32 of the extension 18 is an abutment end 34 which depends from the extension 18 to engage the gunwale of the dinghy 14.
As shown in FIG. 5, the arm 16 is of I-section adjacent inner ends of the forked portions 2! and 22 and is provided with a longitudinally extending slot 36 along which the attachment pin bracket 38 is adjusted and clamped in position of adjustment by the bolts 40 to be properly positioned to be received in the slot in the gunwale plate 41 attached to the gunwale of the dinghy 14 and designed to hold the opposite gunwale against the abutment 34.
At the inner end of the davit 10 is the pivot and attachment portion 42 and the depending thrust portion 44, the latter carrying the adjustable abutment screw 46 having a balled end 48 to engage in the socketed transom plate 50 attached to the transom 12 by fasteners 52. Portion 42 has a pivotal connection with the vertical spaced sides of the davit bracket 54 through the pivot bolt 56. Suitable fasteners 58 attach the bracket 54 to the deck 60.
As more clearly shown in FIGS. 6, 12 and 13 the upper block 62 of the tackle for raising and lowering the dinghy relative to the davit 10 takes the form of a casting having a base portion 64 which is received on the upper pair of the ledges 66 provided along the upper and lower edges of the portions 20 and 22. Clamp members 68 extend between the lower ledges 66 receiving clamp bolts 70 for adjustably clamping the casting 62 along the portions 26 and 22. Upstanding from the base 62 is an integral flange 72 defining an elongated opening 74 parallel to the longitudinal axis of the davit 10 andan opening 76 at a slight angle thereto. Sheaves 78 and 80 are disposed in the openings 74 and 76 and rotatably supported on shafts 82 carried by the opposed sides of the flange 72. A hole 84 is provided in the base 62 to receive an end of the tackle rope and to act as a supporting abutment for a knot tied in the end of the rope.
With the upper block 62 of the tackle of the described construction and use in combination with a conventional double sheave lower block 86 having a hook attached to the eye or ring 83, the ropes extending between the upper and lower tackle block are always disposed in two parallel spaced planes and there is no tending for the blocks to twist relative to each other and the blocks may approach each other to the point of abutment. It will be understood that the rope extends downwardly through the hole 84 around a sheave of the lower tackle block, up through the clearance 90, across the sheave 80 and down through the clearance 92, around the other sheave of, the lower tackle fbl-ock, up through the clearance 94 and across the sheave 78 to the cleat 96.
To adjust the davit 10 to various transoms, in addition to a horizontal adjustment of the screw 46, angular adjustment about the axis of the pivot pin 98 (see FIG. 3) may be desired. As shown, this may be accomplished by threading the screw 46 through pin 98 which is rotatably supported in the forked end 100 of thrust portion 44. Narrow arcuate bosses 102 are provided on the inner opposed faces of the end 100 and between which the screw 46 may swing about the axis of the pin 98. A clamping shoe 104 is carried on the screw 46 and forced into frictional engagement with the bosses 162 by rotating the nut 106 to hold the screw 46 in different positions of angular adjustment. To change adjustment it is only necessary to back off the nut 106 slightly to release the thrust upon the shoe 104. The nut 106 also acts as a lock nut for the screw 46. This arrangement makes it very simple to correctly locate the end 48 in bolt 56 is adjacent one endof the bracket whereby the bracket may be reversed to accommodate difierent tran- 'som slopes and maintain adequate supporting relation ships.
Referring to FiG. 8 the davit is shown adapted to an outwardly sloping transom wit brackets 54 turned end for end and switched from starboard to port.
FIG. 4 shows a modified adjustment screw 46' in the thrust portion 44', the portion 44 having an integral" threaded boss 198 in which the screw 46' is threaded and held in position of adjustmentby the jam nut 110. As the screw46 has no angular adjustment, it is necessary to determine the necessary extension of the screw 46' and then attach the plate St? in the resulting. position on the transom. As such adjustment need only be made at the time of initial installation of the davit, the lack of angular adjustment of the screw 46' is not too important and the rigidity of the structure may more than compensate for lack of angular adjustment. 7
FIGS. 9, 10 and 11 show the principles ofthe present invention adapted to a combined metal and .wood davit.
As shown the wooden beam 111 is fitted at one end int the socket opening of the L-shaped cast metal thrust and transom, and an adjustable abutment at the lower end of said abutment portion for bearing against the transom determining the angular relationship of said beam to the deck.
2. Davit structure as defined in claim 1, said beam having an adjustable outer end extension. 3. Davit structure as defined'in claim 1, said beam having an outer end, an adjustable extension supported in said outer end, and a tackle block axially adjustably supthe plate 120 on the transom. .In FIG. 10 the'structure of FIG. 9 is shown adapted to another form of transom.
' FIG. 11 shows the manner of attachment of the pin bracket 38' on the beam 111.
It is within the scope of the invention 'tohave the beamof the davit non-extensible with the elimination of the extensionlS. As the gunwale pin or latch bracket '38 as well as the tackle block 62' may be adjusted along the beam arm '16, such adjustment may be emthe tackle will hold the gunwale pin or latch engaged in the gunwale plate41. Obviously, the latching structure.
'betweenthe bracket 38 and plate 41 may take numerous ported upon said outer end inwardly of said extension.
4. A davit adapted to be pivotally mounted to a boat deck, comprising in combination, a beam portion having an inner end portion, pivotal means mounting said inner end portion to said'deck, a thrustportionrigidly angularly associated with said beam and extending therebelow and an abutment mounted on said thrust portion spaced below said inner end portion engaging exterior boat structure'below the deck level.
5. A davit as defined in claim 4 wherein said abutment comprises an adjustable member selectively movable with respect to said thrust; portion.
' 6. A davit as defined in claim 4 wherein a bracket is A mounted upon the boat deck and said pivotal means comprises a pivot pin interconnecting said inner beam por- 7 tion and said bracket. 7
i 7. A davit'as defined-in claim 4 wherein a tackle block is adjustably mounted on said beam portion for selected positioning thereon.
8. A, cast metal davit comprising a beam having a main arm portion generally of l-section with a horizontal portion having an inner pivot end and a downwardly dependingthrustabutment portion spacedfrom said pivot end along said horizontal portion and rigid therewith, said horizontal portion at its outer end having merging from its l-section an integral forked section, a generally I-section horizontal extension disposed at its inner end 7 in said forked section, means for clamping said forked forms. As shown, the flanged'pin of the bracket 38 'is vertically'adjustable and engages in the notch of the slot in the plate 41. Other latching structure such as a pin and aperture, bayonet slot and pin and the like are self-suggesting. 7
When the extension 18 is not desired, the tackle block 7 62 may be adjustably mounted along either side of the davit beam in lieu. of-the forked end mounting shown.
