O55/NK States This invention relates to counter, cabinet, and splash wall constructions, and included in the objects of this invention are:
First, to provide a construction whereby a counter splash wall and cabinet shell may be formed of essentially one piece of sheet material, such as stainless steel, and which involves a minimum of welding, a minimum of folding, and a minimum of working or deforming of the metal.
Second, to provide a construction of this type which utilizes a novelly arranged blank of sheet metal, and wherein manufacturing costs are minimized.
With the above and other objects in view, as may appear hereinafter, reference is directed to the accompanying drawings in which:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view showing one form of the counter, cabinet, and splash wall construction;
FIGURE 2 is an enlarged, fragmentary, sectional view through 22 of FIGURE 1;
FIGURE 3 is a developed view of the single-piece blank from which the construction is formed;
FIGURE 4 is a perspective view of another form of the counter, cabinet, and splash wall construction;
FIGURE 5 is a fragmentary, sectional view thereof through 55 of FIGURE 4;
FIGURE 6 is a developed view of the single-piece blank employed to form the modified construction.
Reference is first directed to FIGURES l, 2, and 3. This construction includes a counter panel 1 delineated in the developed view by broken lines. The counter panel 1 is rectangular in form and is provided at one corner with a rectangular notched out portion 2. A side and an end of the counter panel 1 is provided with a side strip 3 and an end strip 4, which are adapted to be folded downward as shown in FIGURE 1.
Foldably connected to the end of the counter panel 1 and having the notched out portion 2 is an end panel 5 which is adapted to be folded upward. Foldably connected to the edge of the counter panel 1 opposite from the strip 3 is a back panel 6 which extends to the notched out portion 2. Foldably connected to the end of the back panel 6 adjacent the notched out portion 2 is a cabinet side panel 7. The back panel 6 and cabinet side panel 7 are adapted to be folded into upright positions relative to the counter panel 1 with the cabinet side panel 7 at right angles to the back panel 6 and coinciding with the shorter edge of the notched out portion 2.
The notched out portion 2 is bordered by fillet strips 8 and 9 which are integral with the counter panel 1. A fillet strip 10 is formed along the mar-gin of the end panel 5 adjacent the notched out portion 2. The fillet strips 8, 9, and it} are adapted to be folded in the manner to form a 90 arc of substantial radius extending from their respective panels. The folded connection between the counter panel 1 and end panel 5 is such as to form a fillet fold 11 of substantial radius, and similar fillet folds 12 and 13 are formed respectively between the counter panel 1 and back panel 6 and between the back panel 6 and the cabinet side panel 7.
In constructing a counter, cabinet, and splash wall structure from the blank shown in FIGURE 3, the two edge strips 3 and 4 are turned downward and welded at the corner designated 14. The back panel 6, when folded relative to the counter panel 1, requires a small amount atent (3 of welding at 15, that is, at the corner of the counter panel 1 opposite from the welded corner 14.
The cabinet side panel 7 is folded so that its lower edge confronts the upper edge of the fillet strip 8, and these two edges are joined by a weld at 16. At the inside corner of the notched out portion 2 between the fillet strips 8 and 9 occurs a weld 17. At this point a small triangular insert is introduced to fill the gap formed when the two fillet strips 8 and '9 are rolled upward. It should be noted that this is the only point in the entire construction wherein an insert is required.
A weld 18 is provided between the fillet strips 9 and 10 at the corners of the end panel 5 and counter panel 1 adjacent the notched out portion 2. A final weld 19 is provided at the lower corners of the end panel 5 and adjacent end of the side strip 3.
It will be observed that the amount of welding is reduced to a minimum. It will also be observed that only simple bends are required to fold the various panels and strips into their desired positions so that the cost of fabricating the structure is minimized.
Reference is now directed to the construction shown in FIGURES 4, 5, and 6. This construction is essentially the same as the first described structure except that the end panel 5 is omitted and a second cabinet side panel 20 is provided. In place of the end panel 5, this end of the counter panel 1 is provided with an end strip 21 adapted to be folded downward in the manner of the end strip 4.
The cabinet side panel 20 isjoined by one corner to the extended corner of the counter panel 1 bordering the notched out portion 2, and in the blank shown in FIG- URE 6 extend parallel with the cabinet side panel 7. One margin of the panel 20 forms a border strip 22 continuing from the joined corner. The fold line between the strip 22 and the panel 20' is a continuation of the fold line between the end strip 21 and the counter panel 1.
The blank is folded to form the back panel 6 and cabinet side panel 7 in the manner of the first described structure. The second cabinet side panel 2% is folded upwardly to bring the border strip 22 flush with the upper edge of the fillet strip 9. The main portion of the panel is then folded to bring it flush with the adjacent end of the counter panel 1 and parallel with the cabinet side panel 7, as shown in FIGURE 4. The lower portion of the panel 20 is joined to the end strip 21 by a weld at 23.
While particular embodiments of this invention have been shown and described, it is not intended to limit the same to the exact details of the constructions set forth, and it embraces such changes, modifications, and equivalents of the parts and their formation and arrangement as come within the purview of the appended claims.
What is claimed is: I
l. A single-piece blank of sheet metal adapted to be formed into a counter structure, said blank comprising: a rectangular counter-forming panel having a rectangular notch portion in one corner whereby said counter-forming panel has a short and a long side, and a short and a long end; integral fillet-forming strips bordering said notched portion and adapted to be rolled upwardly from said counter-forming panel to form fillets of substantial radius; a rectangular back-forming panel integrally joined to said counter-forming panel along said short side and terminating at said notched portion, said back-forming panel adapted to be folded upwardly from said counter forming panel andform therewith a fillet of substantial radius; a rectangularcabinet side forming panel integrally joined to the end of said back-forming panel at its end adjacent said notched portion and adapted to be folded at right angles to said back-forming panel and '2 a form therewith a fillet of substantial radius, the lower edge of said cabinet side-forming panel adapted to align with the upper edge of the fillet strip at the end of said notched portion and bewelded thereto.

A single-piece metal blank as set forth in claim 1, wherein: a second rectangular cabinet side-forming panel is joined integrally by one corner to the juncture of the short end of said counter-forming panel, and is adapted to be folded upwardly from said counter-forming panel into parallelism with said first cabinet side-forming panel.
3. A single-piece metal blank as set forth in claim 1, wherein: a counter end-forming panel is joined integrally to the short end of said counter-forming panel and is adapted to be folded upwardly therefrom and form therewith a fillet of substantial radius.
4. A single-piece counter construction, comprising: a rectangular counter panel having a rectangular notched portion in one corner whereby said counter panel has a short and a long side and a short and a long end; integral upturned fillet strips bordering said notched portion, forming fillets of substantial radius; an integral upturned back panel extending along the short side of said counter panel and forming therewith a fillet of substantial radius; an integral cabinet side panel extending at right angles to said back panel and in vertical registry with and welded to the fillet strip at the adjacent end of said notched portion.
5. A single-piece counter construction as set forth in claim 4, wherein: an integral second cabinet side panel extends upwardly at the short end of said counter panel and projecting rearwardly therefrom to the plane defined by said back panel and in parallel relation with the first mentioned cabinet side panel.
6. A single-piece counter construction as set forth in claim 4, wherein: an integral counter end panel extends upwardly from the short end of said counter panel and an integral fillet strip of substantial radius is folded outwardly therefrom in the plane of the forward edge of said cabinet side panel and the upturned fillet strip therebetween.
