UNITED SIIA'IIES PArENI @Erica WILLIAM ELLIS, JE., or NoETII LAWRENCE, KANSAS.
ROAD-SCRAPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 301,051, dated June 2li, 1884.
Application filed February 14, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM ELLIs, Jr., a citizen of the United States of America, residingat North Lawrence, inthe county of Douglas and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Road- Scrapers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters y or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of roadscrapers which are double-ended and constructed to revolve for the purpose of dumping its contents; and it consists in the arrangement and construction of the various parts thereof, so that the effective operation of 'the device is readily secured.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is -a perspective view of my improved road- Scraper. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the operating-frame, the end of the lower lever being'slotted, as indicated by dotted lines, Figs. 1 and 2, to permit the pivot-bolt to play therein when the said ends are moved rear-V scraper, so as to revolve therewith. Each of if these rollers b is cut away at its periphery to form shoulders c d, each being half the width of the-periphery and reversed, as shown in Fig. 4.
Y A metallic ease, B, is secured to the forward end of each of the handles C, and is provided with a perforated extension, e, at its front, adapted to engage one of the journals a of the scraper. Through each case B play two bolts,
ff', one of which bolts, f, is connected at its rear endto the perforated `end of a lever, g', centrally pivoted on the cross-bar D, connecting the handles. The levers g are pivotally connected together at their inner ends. A curved hand-lever, h, is pivoted to the end of each of the handles U, and is connected at its forward end to the outer end of the adjacent lever g by a link, t'. A tension-spring, E, is secured on the bottom of the cross-bar D, as shown in Fig. 3, and has its extremities extended to engage the outer ends of the levers g, as shown in Fig. 2. This'tension-spring tends to maintain the outer ends of the levers g in the position illustrated. A small handlever, F, is pivoted on the cross-bar D at the rear of the central connection of the levers g, and said hand-lever carries at one end a roller, j, journaledloosely on its end, and adapted, when said hand-lever is moved in a position parallel with the handles G, to bear against the inner connected ends of the levers g and force them forward, thus throwing the outer ends rearward. Two plates, G, of spring metal,
are secured at their upper ends, one to the inner side of each of the handles C, so as to depend therefrom, the ends le of said plates being bent up, as shown in Fig. 2.
Thedraft-bail II is bent in toward thesides of the scraper A, so as to form extensions lof said draft-bail. vBrackets I, provided with .blades an, are adapted to be secured to the sides of the scraper A, as shown in Fig. 1. The bolts f f arranged side by side, are adapted to engage the shoulders c cl of the disk, which shoulders being reversed will cause the bolt f to be above the shoulder c, while the bolt f is below the shoulder d. The bolt f is Spring-seated in the case B, so as to yield, but may be otherwise connected to be retracted within said case when necessary.
By depressing either of the handles 7L the outer ends of the levers g are drawn backward against the spring-tension, thus withdrawing the bolts fand permitting the weight of the load in the scraperto dump and revolve the scraper, the position of the bolt f with regard to the shoulder d preventing any reverse movement of the scraper. Vhen the Scraper revolves forward, the disk b turns therewith and forces the bolt f back into the case until IOC) the terminus of said shoulder is reached, at of the supporting-frame, and provided with which point the bolt is forced beneath said shoulder to occupy the position first described.
By making the case B and its extensions e in one piece the parts may be readily cast and great durability secured, and thc entranceof dirt to prevent the working of the bolt pre- 'contact with said ends, but oppose any downward movement of said scraper.
Should the frame composed of the handles C and their connections be thrown forward accidentally or otherwise, the said handles will come in contact with the extensions Z of the draft-bail H.
The cutterbrackets I insure the regular trimming of the sides of the space in which the scraper travels.
I claim- 1. vrIhe combination, in a road-scraper, of a scraper proper pivoted in a suitable frame by journals, and provided with a disk having reverse shoulders located in parallel peripheral planes, as described, and bolts arranged and operating to respectively prevent the forward and rearwardrotation of said disk, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, in a road-scraper, of a scraper proper pivoted in a suitable frame by journals, and provided with a disk having reverse shoulders, and two bolts arranged on the frame supporting the scraper proper, one operated by hand-lever connections secured on the frame and the other automatically yielding, substantially as described.
3.- 'Ihe combination, in a road-scraper, of a scraper proper having journals located at its l sides, a notched disk secured to said scraper,
a case secured on one side at the forward part an extension perforated to receive one of the journals, a bolt playing through said case, and devices for operating the same, substantially as described.
4. rIhe combination, in a road-scraper pivdisk, and handles pivoted at each side of the upper end of the frame and connected with said bolt devices, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination, in a road-scraper, of a scraper properpivoted in a frame, bolt devices for locking it in its pivoted position, mechanism for disengaging said bolt devices, and means for locking 4said devicesin their disengaged position, substantially as set forth.
6. The combination,` in a road-scraper pivoted in a suitable frame by journals, and provided with. cutter-brackets bolted to the sides of the same, of a disk having reverse shoulders located ifparallel peripheral planes, as described, and bolts arranged to respectively prevent the forward and rearward rotation of said disk, substantially as set forth.
' 7. The combination, in a road-scraper, of a suitable frame provided with depending plates G, bent and arranged for the purpose set forth, a scraper proper pivoted in said frame, and provided with a disk having reverse shoulders located inparallel peripheral planes, as l
