JAMES B. MAHAFFEY, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
APPARATUS FOR FEEDING SHAVINGS To FURNACES...
EPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 300,990, dated June 24, 1884.
Application filed November 21, 1883. (No model.)
workshop where they are produced or from the storage-room, as will hereinafter appear.
In the drawings forming a part hereof, Figare I is a perspective View of parts of a building, illustrating the application thereto of my improved apparatus. Fig. II is a sectional View, on an enlarged scale, of a part of the invention.
A is the boiler-room, and B the storageroom for shavings, separated from the boilerroom by a wall.
O is the boiler-front, and D a suction and forcing fanlocated on an upper floor in the building. The location of the fan has, however, no bearing on the present invention, as its position is always governed by circumstances and peculiarities in construction of the building. I
E is the main supply-pipe, through which shavings are drawn from the workshop to the suction part of the fan.
F is a supplemental supply-pipe extending from the storage-room B to the fan.
G is the delivery-pipe by means of which shaving are forced from the fan to the boilerfurnace, and it has a nozzle, a, whereby the whole or a portion of the shavings may be delivered to the storage-room B. The nozzle (1 and the other pipes are provided with suitable gates or valves, (not shown,) whereby movement of the shavings is controlled. The lower end of the supplemental supply-pipe F is closed, and has nozzles c, any one of which is adapted for attachment to a flexible pipe, H. The straight part of the pipe H is formed of several metallic sections, (1, of conical form, inserted one within the other, and connected cry-pipe G; but should the quantity of shav- A ings be greater than necessary for the furnace the nozzle or branch pipe a is opened and the surplus discharged to the storage-room. Supposing that machinery. in the building other than the wood-working machinery is'in operation, and the machines which produce shavings stopped, the supply is then taken from the storage-room through the supplemental supply-pipe F, the flexible inlet-pipe being moved about to wherethe shavings have accumulated.
It will be understood that the curved neck of the flexible pipe H fits loosely over the nozzle onthe pipe F, to which it is applied, and may be easily turned, and that the nozzles not in use are covered With caps 91 I claim- 1. An apparatus for feeding shavings to boiler-furnaces,which consists of a suction and forcing fan, a delivery-pipe leading from the fan to the boiler-furnace, having a dischargeno-zzle therein, and a main and supplemental supply-pipe for the fan, the said supplemental pipe having a scoop or shovel, substantially as and for purpose specified.
2. In a fuel-feeding device, the flexible supply-pipe H, having-its central portion formed of metallic conical sections, placed one within the other and connected by an exterior sleeve of canvas, substantially as specified.
