FRANK BURNS, OF WESTFIELD, NEW YORK.
BOTTLE-STOPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 300,945, dated June 24, 1884.
Application filed March .29, 1884. (Modeh) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK BURNS, acitizen of the United States, and a resident of WVestfield, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Stoppers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the upper portion of abottle provided with my improved stopper, showing the bottle closed. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the rubber tip, and Fig. 3 is a similar view of the plug. Fig. i is a side view showing the thumb-lever raised and the stopper resting in the mouth of the bottle. Fig. 5 is a side view with the lever raised and the stopper resting upon the side of the mouth of the bottle; and Figs. 6 and 7 are sectional detail views of the stopper and a portion of the mouth of the bottle, showing the stopper released and compressed.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to that class of bottle-stoppers consisting of a rubber or other elastic stopper hinged to the upper portion of a bail hingedto another bail, which, in its turn, is hinged upon the bottle, and which may be operated by the fingers to raise and lower the bail having the stopper and the stopper; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of the same, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates the upper portion of a bottle, and B indicates the thumb bail, the inner end of which are pivoted in recesses in the sides of the swelling of the neck of the bottle, or may be pivoted in eyes formed by a wire around the neck of thebottle. The thumb-bail forms near its inner ends two eyes, 0, in the same manner as theends of the thumb-bail in the common construction of bottle-stoppers, and the remainder of the bail forms a bail, D, which projects to one side, and a shoulder, E, which bears against the side of the neck when the thumb'bail is raised or depressed.
F is the bail upon which the stopper is hinged, and the ends of this bail are bent inward in the usual manner, and pivoted in the eyes G of the thumb-bail, while the stopperplug G is hinged upon the upper straight end of the bail, the bail passing through a perforation, H, in the upper portion of the plug. The reduced lower portion, I, of the plug, which is covered by the rubber tip or stopper J, has two enlargements, K, one above the other, which enlargements correspond to similar recesses, L, in the central recess, M, of the tip or stopper, thus securing the tip or stopper more firmly upon the reduced end of the plug. The tip or stopper, which is of rubber or similar elastic material, has a crease, N, around the shoulder 0, formed above the reduced portion P of the stopper. This shoulder bears upon the upper edge of the mouth of the bottle, and the said crease will add to the.
elasticity of the stopper, so that the under side of the lower flange, Q, formed on the shoulder by the crease N, may rest upon the edge of the mouth of the bottle when the thumb-bail is raised, releasing the stopper from the pressure of the bail. The said flange thus seated prevents the contents of the bottle from spilling either by their effervescence or by the bottle being tilted, because the shoulder of the thumb-bail, by hearing against the side of the enlargement of the neck, holds the stopper in the mouth of the bottle and the stopper-bail upright until the said-stopper-bail is tilted by hand toward the thumb-bail, slipping the stopper out of the mouth of the bottle.
It will be seen that in this manner the contents of the bottle cannot be spilled, even if the stopper has been released, and that the crease in the upper portion or shoulder of the stopper will also cause the stopper to hear more tightly against the edge of the mouth of the bottle when the stopper is compressed by the bails.
It will also be seen that the outer portion of the thumb-bail being bent so as project at one side of the neck of the bottle, it will be more convenient to operate than in stoppers of the usual construction, as it offers a very convenient lever for the finger of the person opening the bottle.
It will also be seen that by having the thumbbail bent to form the shoulder bearing'against the neck of the bottle the stopper and its bail or yoke will be prevented from passing over the mouth of the bottleand dropping down upon the other side of the neck of the bottle, the stopper and its bail only swinging down upon the same side as the thumb-bail.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States v 1. Theherein-described elasticstopper,l1aviug a central recess for the plug, and having a crease around its laterally-proj ecting shoulder forming two annular flanges, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
2. In a bottle-stopper, the herein-described thumb-bail pivoted with its ends upon the side of the bottle, having eyes near its ends, and bent at its outer portion to form a shoulder, and an outwardly and laterally projecting lever bail,
as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
3. The combination, in a bottle-stopper, of
verse perforation in the top of thesame, and i an elastic stopper having two annular flanges at its upper portion, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own Ihave hereunto aflixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
V FRANK BURNS.
