HARE/s, K/acH, Fosrse; He ems United States Patent 3,006,039 CUNCEALED DOOR HINGE Robert Brydolf, Pasadena, Calif, assignor, by mesne assignments, to M & H Industries, Anaheim, Calif, a corporation of California Filed Aug. 1, 1958, Ser. No. 752,566 2 Claims. (Cl. 2016) The present invention relates in general to concealed, or substantially concealed, door hinges and, more particularly, to door hinges of this type which are of particular utility in connection with lip doors, such a door having a central body insertable into a door frame adjacent an inner frame surface thereof and having a marginal lip adapted to overlie a front surface of the frame.
. A primary object of the invention is to provide a hinge which is concealed, or substantially concealed, in a groove which is formed in the rear surface of the door adjacent and perpendicular to one edge of the door body and which extends across the lip of the door into the door body.
An important object of the invention is to provide a sheet metal hinge having door and frame leaves respectively including flat, parallel door and frame arms pivotally interconnected at adjacent ends thereof, the doorarm being positioned in the groove in the rear surface of the door and the frame arm being positioned in such groove when the door is closed.
Another object is to provide the door and frame leaves with fiat door and frame flanges adjacent the other ends of the door and frame arms, respectively, the door and frame flanges being perpendicular to the door and frame arms, respectively, and extending therefrom in opposite directions. The door flange is seated flat against the rear surface of the door body and the frame flange is seated flat against the inner surface of the frame, the frame flange being disposed between such inner frame surface and the corresponding edge of the door body when the.
door body is inserted into the frame upon closure'of the door.
Another object is to provide a hinge of the foregoing character which permits both vertical and horizontal adjustment of the position of the door relative to the door frame after the door is hung.
More particularly, an object is to provide the door and frame flanges with elongated door screw and frame screw slots, respectively, which are perpendicular to each other and which receive door and frame screws, respectively, extending into the rear surface of the door body and into the inner frame surface, respectively. A further object in this connection is to provide a hinge wherein the door screw slot is perpendicular to the pivot axis of the hinge and wherein the frame screw slot is parallel thereto. With this construction, the door may be adjusted horizontally relative to the frame by moving the door screw horizontally in the door screw slot after the door screw is inserted into the rear surface of the door body, and the door may be adjusted vertically relative to the frame by moving .the frame screw slot vertically relative to the frame screw after the latter has been inserted into the inner frame surface. The door and frame flanges are also provided with round door and frame screw holes to receive door and frame screws, respectively, which fix the door in position after the foregoing adjustments have been made.
Another important object of the invention is to provide the frame arm with an edge seated against the front surface of the frame and provided with a marking prong inserted into such front surface. With this construction, after mounting the hinge on the door, the door is placed in the frame, whereupon the marking prong is inserted into the front surface of the frame so that the 7 point at which at least one of the frame screws is to be inserted into the inner frame surface may readily be located by means of a template, for example, utilizing the mark made by the marking prong as a reference point.
The foregoing objects, advantages, features and results of the present invention, together with various other objects, advantages, features and results thereof which will be evident to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates, maybe attained with the embodiment of the invention described in detail hereinafter and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
FIG. 1 is an elevational view of a door hung by means of two hinges of the invention;
FIG. 2 is an enlarged, fragmentary sectional view taken along either of the arrowed lines 2-2 of FIG. 1 and illustrating a hinge of the invention, the door being shown in its closed position;
FIG. 3 is an elevational view showing the hinge attached to an inner surface of the door frame and a rear surface of the door with the door in its open position; and
FIG. 4 is a perspective view of the door hinge of the invention.
1 In the drawing, the numeral 10 designates a door frame having a front surface 12 and an inner surface 14,
- i.e., having a surface 14 which faces inwardly relative to the door opening provided by the door frame.
The numeral 16 designates a lip door comprising a central body 18 insertable into the frame 10 adjacent the inner frame surface 14 and comprising a marginal lip 20 which overlies the front surface 12 of the frame when the doorv is closed. In the particular construction illustrated, the lip 20 is substantially rectangular in cross section and is provided with only a slightly rounded corner 22 at the front surface 24 of the door. However, the corner 22 may be rounded considerably more than shown, i.e., may have a considerably larger radius than shown, if 180 opening of the door 16 is desired.
The rear surface of the door 16, which is designated generally by the numeral 26, is provided therein adjacent and perpendicular to one edge 28 of the door body 18 with a groove 30 extending across the lip 20 into the door body. (With a more rounded corner than the corner 22, the groove 30 will extend through the lip 20 to the front surface of the door.) The groove 30 is provided with side walls 32 and is provided with a front wall 34 which extends more or less diagonally from the rear surface 26 of the door toward the front surface 24 thero-f in a direction toward the rounded corner 22 of the lip 20 of the door.
The invention includes a sheet metal hinge 36 having a door leaf 38 and a frame leaf 40, the door leaf comprising a flat door arm 42 positioned in the groove 30 and having adjacent one end thereof a flat door flange 44 perpendicular to the door arm and seated against the rear surface, 46, of the body 18 of the door 16. The frame leaf 40 comprises a flat, generally L-shaped frame arm 48 parallel to the door arm 42 and insertable into the groove 30 when the door 16 is closed, the frame leaf also including adjacent one end of the frame arm 48 aflat frame flange 50 perpendicular to the frame arm and seated against the inner frame surface 14. The frame flange 50 is disposed between the inner frame surface 14 and the edge 28 of the door body 18 when I the door is closed.v
flanges 44 and 50. The pivot means 52 is shown as comprising a pivot pin 54;
The door and frame flanges 44 and 50 extend from the door and frame arms 42 and 48, respectively, in opposite directions. With the construction illustrated, the'door and frame flanges 44 and 50 are perpendicular to each other when the door 16' is closed, as shown in FIG. 2, and are parallel to each other-when the door has been swung open through an angle of 90, as shown in FIG. 3.
The foregoing structural interrelation between the various parts of the door and frame leaves 38 and 40, the groove 30 in the door 16, the rear surface 46 of the door body 18, and the inner surface-14 of theframe 10, results in a compact hinge structure which is substantially entirely concealed within thegroove 30.
The door flange 44 is secured to the rear body surface 46 of the door 16 by screws 56 and 58 respectively extending into the rear body surface through an elongated slot 60 and a round hole 62, the slot 60 being perpenldicular to the edge 28 of the door body 18 and to the pivot axis provided by the pivot means 52. The frame flange 5 0 is secured to the inner frame surface 14 by means of screws 64 and 66 respectively extending into the inner frame surface through an elongated slot 68 and a round hole 7i} in the frame flange, the slot 68 being parallel to the pivot axis and perpendicular to the slot 60. With this construction, the position of the door 16 may be adjusted relative to the frame 10 both horizontally and vertically after installing the screws 56 and 64 in the slots 60 and 68. After the desired adjustment has been effected, the screws 58 and 66 are installed in the holes 62 and 70 to maintain the desired adjustment.
In order to mark the location of the points where the screws 64 and 66 are to be threaded into the inner frame surface 14, the frame arm 48 is provided with an edge 72, within the generally L-shaped angle formed by the frame arm, having thereon a marking prong 74 adapted to penetrate the front surface 12 of the frame 10. The marking prong 74' is utilized to mark the front surface 12 of the frame 10 after the hinge 36 has been mounted on the door 16 by means of the screw 56, as'will be described in more detail hereinafter,
Considering the manner in which the hinge 36 is installed, the door arm 42 is placed inthe groove in the position shown in the drawing with the door flange 44 seated against the rear body surface 46. Thereafter, the screw 56 is inserted into the slot 60 in the door flange 44 and is driven into the rear body surface 46. Then,
the door is inserted into the frame 10 with the frame leaf '40 in the position shown in FIG. 2, whereby the marking prong 74 penetrates the front surface 12 of the door frame. Subsequently, the door 16 is withdrawn from the door frame 10 and, by means of a suitable template, which may be a frame. leaf 40, the point at which the screw 64 is to be driven into the inner frame surface 14 is located with reference to the mark made by the marking prong 74. Thereafter, with the door leaf 18 in the position of FIG. 3 relative to the frame leaf 40, the screw 64 is inserted into the slot 68 in the frame flange 50 and is driven into the inner frame surface 14 at the previously located point.
The foregoing accomplished, the door 16 is adjusted vertically and horizontally relative to the door frame 10 by moving the door leaf 38 horizontally relative to the door, as permitted by the slot 60, and by moving the frame leaf 40 vertically relative to the frame 10, as permitted by the slot 68. Once the door has been adjusted properly, the screws 56 and 64 are tightened and the screws 58 and 66 are installed.
Although an exemplary embodiment of the invention has been disclosed herein, it will be understood that various minor changes, modifications and substitutions may be incorporated in such embodiment without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined by the claims which follow.
