lie it known that l, CiL-iRLEs BowsKY, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Savannah, in the county of Ghatham and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Devices for Controlling the Inlet and Outlet Pipes of a Bath-Tub, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in devices for controlling the inlet and outlet pipes of atank or bathtub; and it consists in one or more valve-rods adapted to be reciprocatcd through the inlet-pipes of the hot and cold and shower spigots of a bath-tub and the wastepipe, and provided with a series of perforations adapted to register with one or all of these, as desired, the whole being connected to and operated by a hand indicating upon a dial the required ilow of water, whether hot or cold, &c., substantially as will be here inal'ter more fully set forth and described.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and. use the same, I will now proceed to de scribe its construction and operation, referring to the accompanying drawings,'in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail, partly in section, of the perforated valve-rod and its connections; and Fig. 3 is a detail section of one of the spigots with the valverod within it.

These spigots and their stuffingboxes are placed side by side in line with each other, and are connected by a rod, 0, which slides back and forth through them and is provided with a series of perforations, 0 cl cf, which are arranged to register with the openings in the supply pipes and spigots, as will be presently understood. F represents a second sliding rod connected rigidly to the rod G by a connecting bar or arm, 1), so that they will move simultaneously. The rod F has a perforation, l, through it, which registers with the opening in the pipe G, leading to the ,shower, through which this rod slides. The rods F and C are solid, excepting the perforations. The end of the valve-rod C- opposite to the waste-pipe D is provided with a cogged rack, 7., with which meshes a pinion, Z, secured to a hand or pointor, M, which is provided with a dial-plate, M. This dial is marked with any suitable device, such as 11., 6., $1., and H. &C., indicating that when the hand registers with these marks the perforated valve-rods will allow of the rlow of either the hot, cold, showerj or hot and cold water pipes. The rod 0 is provided with two pins. mm, which engage with a stop, in, on the end of the tub, and limit the movement of the rods 0 F. The pipes for supplying hot or cold water and the shower-pipe are all. led into the bathroom in the usual way, and the hot and cold water pipes are each supplied with a striding-box and spigot, shown. The rod 0 passes through the striding-boxes and cuts off the flow of water from the pipes to their spigots, its beveled end in its normal position also allowing the plug 33 to rise and open the wastepipe. As the rod is moved by its pointer, the plug E is forced down and held so, thus closing the escape. As the rod moves along, its perforations register with the openings in the hot or cold water pipes and their spigots, and allows the passage of water to the tub; and the perforations in the valve-rod are so placed as to allow of the use of either hot or cold water, or both at once, as may be desired, by a greater or less prominent of the rod. The valve-rod F, being connected to and moving with the rod 0, in passing through the stufiing-box in the angle or bend of the shower- 9 pipe, allows the How of water through this pipe at the proper time, and as the dial is marked so that the movement of the hand will always indicate the position of the various perforations in the valverods, a stranger may Lin obtain what is desired without trying the different spigots to ascertain which will give hot or cold water, &c.

The arrangement of the perforations in the valve-rods and the corresponding indicatingmarks upon the dial may of course be Varied as may seem most desirable, or as may be necessary to suit the arrangement of water-pipes.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination, with an inlet-pipe for a bathtub or similar tank, of a transverselypcrforated rod'sliding through said pipe transversely, whereby'the flow of water is started or stopped by the movement of the rod, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination, with the hot and cold water pipes of a bath-tub, and their spigots, having stuffing-boxes arranged in line with each other, of a sliding rod passing through the boxes in both pipes, and provided with transverse perforations which register with the passages in spigots and pipes as the rod is shifted, and an operating hand or pointer registering on a marked dial the position of the perforations in the rod, substantially as shown and described.

3. A bath-tub Y or similar tank having a frame or cylinder through which the escapeopening is made, and provided with a springactuated plug or valve adapted to close this opening when forced down, in combination with a sliding rod formed with a beveled nose arranged across the outer end of the springplug, whereby the escape may be opened or closed .without putting the hand into the water, substantially as shown and described.

5. In a bathing apparatus, the inlet-pipes A-B G, )rovided with stuffing-boxes, in combination with the perforated valve-rods O F, having stops m m, the toothed rack 7r, pinion Z, hand or pointer M, and dial M, having indicating-marks, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
