MACHINE FOR CUTTING BARREL-HEADS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 3O0, l-24,:dated June 17, 1884.

Be it known that I, SYLvEs'rER C. WIL- LIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Liverpool, county of Oolumbiana, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrel-Head-Outting Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a description of'the same and of the manner of constructing and using the invention in such full, clear, concise, and exact terms as to enable any person skilled in the art to which it appertains to construct and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, the principle of the invention being herein explained, and the best mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle, so as to distinguish it from other inventions. 1

Fig. 3 is a plan view of the saw-bed with saws and knives attached. Fig. .1 is a detail view of one of the saws, showing the means of vertically adjusting the same.

Under the platen E, when in position, is the bed-piece H, for the reception of the blanks. The bed-piece H is stationary by being firmly screwed to the top of the upright shaft I, but is removable for the substitution of larger or smaller bed-pieces, as may be required for difi'erentsized heads. in which it is firmly planted. The step J is firmly secured to the foundation A. At the foot of the shaft I, and immediately above the step J, is the loose thinible K, under which are inserted the prongs of the lever L. Above the thimble K is the pulley M, on which plays the power-belt. The pulley M is firmly fastened to the under side of the circular table N. The table N carries the cuttingsaws a and the beveling-knives a, which are upright and mounted on angle-irons. These saws and knives are movable by means of screws, bolts, or clamps for adjustment to varying concentric circles on the table N, as required for the cutting of larger or smaller heads. The saws and knives are respectively adapted to be maintained at different points of vertical adjustment. The detail view of Fig. 4 represents the means employed in connection with a saw, the same means being also employed with the knives. This table N revolves loosely on the shaft I, and is raised or lowered by means of the lever L. The lever L, pivoted in fulcrum Z, is controlled by the eccentric lever Z, or by other convenient methods. IVhen the blanks are laid on the receiving bed-piece H and se cured by the platen E, the table N is lifted to its work by the lever L, and revolving by the applied power on the pulley M, the heads are cut and beveled by the saws and knives.

"What I claim is- 1. In a barrel-head-cutting machine, the combination, with a rotary table provided with upright sawing and cutting devices and means of raising or lowering the table, of a circular bed-piece located above the latter, substantially as set forth.
2. In a barrel head cutting machine, the combination, with a rotary table provided with upright sawing and cutting devices and means for raising or lowering it, and a bedpiece located above the table, of a platen lo cated above the bed-piece, and mechanism for vertically adjusting said platen, substantially as set forth.
