Description

Sept. 26, 1961 R. c. FLINT HoUsING FOR DooR cLosING DEvIcE Filed Jan. 14. 1957 United tates Patent O 3,001,664 HOUSING FOR DOOR CLOSING DEVICE Russell C. Flint, Princeton, Ill., assignor to LQN Closers, Inc., Princeton, Ill., a corporation of Illinois Filed Jan. 14, 1957, Ser. No. 634,062 1 Claim. (Cl. 220-4) This invention relates to a housing for a door closing device and more particularly, to an enclosure for a door closing device of the surface type.
In the past surface type door closers have been manufactured with small consideration for their appearance. Manufacturers have emphasized efficiency to the minimizing of exterior design, with the result that the ordinary door closing device is unsightly. Furthermore, recent contemporary design has emphasized clean and smooth lines.
It is, therefore, an object of the invention to provide a housing for a door closing device which is pieasing in appearance.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a housing which may be readily and conveniently installed.
It is a still further object of the invention to provide a housing which has a portion that is readily removable for adjusting or servicing the closing device which it encloses.
It is another object of the invention to provide a housing which may be easily cleaned.
It is still another object of the invention to provide a housing that harmonizes with the surroundings.
It is yet another object of the invention to provide a housing which does not rattle or Shake against the closing device or door.
Further objects and advantages of this invention will become evident as the description proceeds and from an examination of the accompanying drawing which illustrates one embodiment of the invention and in which similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In the drawings:
FIGURE l is a top plan View of a housing for a door closing and checking device embodying the invention.
FIGURE 2 is a rear view in elevation of the device shown in FIGURE 1.
FIGURE 3 is an end view in elevation of the device shown in FIGURE 1.
FIGURE 4 is a view in section, taken substantially along line 4-4 in FIGURE 1.
FIGURE 5 is a perspective view of the interior of the base member in the housing of the invention.
FIGURE 6 is a perspective view of the interior of the cover member in the housing of the invention.
Referring now to the drawings in more detajl, the housing 10 follows the general dirnensions of the door closing and checking device 11; however, it has a cleaner and more streamlined appearance. The housing may be mounted to a door 13 as shown in FIGURE 4. As shown in FIGURES 5 and 6, the housing has a base member 14 and a cover member 15. Base member 14 has a rear wall 17 provided with a number of screw holes 18 for mounting to a door 13 by Wood screws 19, as
Fatented Sept. 26, 1961 lCC shown in FIGURE 4. Integrally s'ecured to the rear Wall member 17 is a top wall 20 provided with openings 21 for the various fittings of the door closing device.
The cover member 15 encloses the door closing device With a front wall 23, end walls 30, 31, and a bottom wall 26. The end walls are spaced from each other at a distance greater than the length of rear wall 17 of the base member. Also the bottom wall 2a of the cover is spaced below the lower edge of the rear wall 17, so as to completely enclose it.
On each end wall 31, 32, is mounted on the interior surface at the upper portion a pair of spaced ears do, 41. The spaced ears to form a slot to receive therebetween the end portions of the top wall 20 of the base member when the cover is mounted thereon. extend from the front wall 23 along the end walls 31, 32 to a point spaced from the rear edges 32, 33, of the end walls to leave portions 44, 45 on the end walls for encompassing the end edges 32, 33 of the rear wall 17.
The upper ear at each end of the cover is provided with a screw hole 42 which receives a screw 43 for removably securing the cover to the base member, as best shown in FIGURE 4. It will be realized that other methods of removably attaching the cover to the base member may be employed.
The front extremity of the top wall 20 is bent upwardly into a flange 50 spaced from the end portions 51, S2, of the top wall. The end portions 51, 52 slidably receive the spaced ears on the cover member.
In the drawing and specification there has been set forth a preferred embodiment of the invention, and al- 'though specific terms are employed, these are used in a generic and descriptive sense only, and not for purposes of limitation. Changes in form and the proportion of parts, as well as the substitution of equivalents are contemplated, as circumstances may suggest or render expedient, without departing from the spirit or scope of this invention as further defined in the followng claim.
I claim:
A housing for a door closing device comprising a base member; means for securing said -base member to a door; a cover member for enclosing said door closing device having two end wall members, a side wall member, a bottom wall member, and an open top, said end wall members spaced apart a distance greater than the length of said base member; said base member having at each end a flat horizontal portion, said flat horizontal portions extending outwardly to positions adjacent said end walls of said cover member; a slot at the upper portion and on the interior surface of each of said end wall members positioned for slidably receiving said flat horizontal portions therebetween; and screw means coacting with said cover member and said flat horizontal portions for removably securing said cover member to said base member.
