JAMES MONROE METGALF, OF ENFIELD, ILLINOIS.
FLOOD-GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 300,102, dated June 10, 1884.
(No model.)
' To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known thatl, JAMES M. llIE'lCALF, of Enfield, White county, Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Flood-Gate, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter'fully described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
Figure l is a perspective View of my improved flood-gate, and Fig. 2 is a plan view.
In a frame consisting of four posts, a, and suitable connecting-timbers, b c, and braces (1, setup by planting the posts in the ground, framing them into mud-sills, or attaching them to a bed-frame or floor, e, as may be preferred, I hang a pair of gates, f, to the posts a of the upstream side of the frame, so as to swing downstream and close together in an acute angle, as shown. I connect a weighted cord, 9, with each gate, working over a sheave, 71, mounted over the upstream posts a, or any other suitable part of the frame, so that the weights i, attached to said cords, will rise and allow the gate to open whenever the pressure of the flood against the gates overbalances their gravity, and said weights will close the gates whenever the'flood subsides 5 and I attach a check cord or chain, j, to each gate, to stop them at the proper meeting-point and prevent one from closing within the other. I
hinge the gates to the upper sides of the posts a, so that the pressure of the gates on the hinges is will be toward the posts, by which the hinges will'be better protected from the stress of the floods than if connected to the lower side, and I connect said hinges to the gates by a cleat, Z, which enables the gates to be swung wide open without overstraining the hinges, as would otherwise be the case in consequence of the gates bearing against the insides of the posts before completely opening.
.The gates will stand sufficiently above the bed of the stream or bed-floor eto allow the ordinary flow of water to escape under them when closed. Preferably the cords or chains 9 andj will be attached to posts k, extending upward from the gates.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, in a flood-gate, of the supporting-frame consisting of posts a, connecting-timbers b c, and braces d, gates f, weights and cords t g, and check cords or chains j, substantially as described.
2. In combination with the rectangular frame-work, the gates f, having vertical cleats l, and the end hinges, 7:, said hinges being secured to the upstream sides of the posts of the frame and to the faces of the cleats next to the sides of the frame-work, as described.
