(Cl. 229-16) This invention relates to a display device and more particularly to a corrugated paper display stand adaptable for displaying merchandise in a bin formed by the stand structure.
The invention contemplates the provision of a slinglike construction for the bin. More particularly, the invention contemplates the provision of a bin extending between upright sidewall panels and itself comprising a slinglike train of panels which are hinged to each other and all of which are narrower than the spacing between the pair of upright panels between which the bin extends. The bin is hinged to each of the upright panels between which it extends and it hangs as a catenary between them. Other upright sidewall panels act in compression to oppose the funicular action of the catenary.
The general object of the invention is to provide a structure including such a slinglike train of panels which, together with the pair of upright panels between which they extend, form a load-carrying span assembly of such character that the display stand can support heavier merchandise than prior display stands made from exactly the same paperboard.

A more particular object of the invention, in one aspect thereof, is to provide a structure which will accomplish the above results and the display bin portions of which may be formed entirely from paperboard elements, even including the fastening means employed to assemble the load-carrying span assembly. One example of the invention is illustrated in FIG- URES l-6. The initial step in erecting the display device shown in its erected condition in FIGURES 1-5 from the blank shown in FIGURE 6 may comprise stapling the tab 13 to the free edge of the panel 10, which is to become an upright sidewall panel. This may be done by the carton manufacturer and the article may be shipped in this condition to the user.
When erected by the user, the display device comprises a stand having upright oppositely disposed sidewalls. One pair of these sidewalls indicated by the reference numerals 10 and 11 constitute a pair of upright panels between which extends a bin generally indicated by the reference .numeral 15. The bin 15 comprises a slinglike train of panels 17 which are hinged to each other (either along score lines or by tongue-and-slot fas tening means) and all of which are narrower than the spacing between the upright panels ltl'and 11. The bin 15 is hinged to each of the upright panels 10 and 11 and hangs as a catenary between them. The upright side-. wall panels (not numbered) which extend between the panels 10 and 11 act in compression to oppose the funic: ular action of the catenary.
The span assembly comprising the upright panels 10', and 11 and the slinglike train of the panels 17 is com-- pleted by fastening means which, in the illustrated example, consists of tongue-and-slot connections 20 and 2 1. The notches 22 behind the tongues 20 are adapted to interengage with the shoulders or fillets 23 of the slots 21.
Thus it will be understood that there is provided a span assembly including the upright panels 10 and 11 and the train of panels 17 It will be seen that in the erected condition of the display device, there are provided fastening means between at least one adjacent pair of panels in such span assembly (namely, between the lowermost pair of panels 17 as viewed in FIGURE 3). It will also be seen that those pairs of adjacent panels in the span assembly between which there are no such fastening means are comprised of integral panels.
Thus in the fully erected device, the panels 10 and 11 and the slinglike train of panels 17 together form a load: carrying span assembly which includes fastening means between at least one adjacent pair of panels in the span,
those pairs of panels in the span betwen which there are the merchandise-carrying portion of the display device as seen most clearly in FIGURE 1.

The additional tabs 32 and 34 and stapled connections are provided in this example in order to accomplish a steppedestal type of stand, but it will be understood that in this example, as in the example of FIGURES 1-6, the display device comprises a stand having upright oppositely disposed sidewalls at its upper end.
In the display device of FIGURES 7-13, one pair-of these upright oppositely disposed sidewalls, indicated by the reference numerals 30 and 31, constitute a pair of upright panels between which extends a bin generally indicated by the reference numeral 35. The bin 35 comprises a slinglike train of panels 37 which are hinged to each other (either along score lines or by tongue-andslot fastening means) and all of which are narrower than the spacing between the upright panels 30 and 31. Thus, it will be understood that there is provided a span assembly including the upright panels 30 and 31 as well as the train of panels 37. It will be seen that in the erected condition of the display device, there are provided fastening means between at least one adjacent pair of panels in such span assembly (in the example of FIGURES 7-13 the fastening means extends between two adjacent pairs of panels in the span assembly, namely, between those ones of the panels 37 which are integral with the panels 30 and 31 and the endmost panels 37 formed from the blank shown in FIGURE 13). It will also be seen that those pairs of adjacent panels in the span assembly between which there are no such fastening means are comprised of integral panels.
Thus, in the fully erected device the panels 30 and 31 and the slinglike train of panels 37 together form a loadcarrying span assembly which includes fastening means between at least one (and in this case more than one) adjacent pair of panels in the span, those pairs of panels in the span between which there are no such fastening means consisting of integral panels.
The carton blanks shown in FIGURES 12 and 13 may comprise double face corrugated board which may be colored or otherwise specially finished only on the outer side. The top flaps 45 and 46 may be provided which are infolded prior to the completion of the load-carrying span which includes the panels 30, 31 and 37. Thus, the outer faces of the flaps 45 and 46 form a finished inner side for the merchandise-carrying portion of the display device as seen most clearly in FIGURE 7.
Another example of the invention is illustrated in FIGURES 14-17. The initial stage in erection of the display device shown in its erected condition in FIG- URES 14-16 from the blank shown in FIGURE 17 may comprise stapling the tab 53 to the free edge of the panel 51 which is to become an upright sidewall panel. This may be done by the carton manufacturer and the article may be shipped in this condition to the user.

One of the panels 57 of which the bin 55. is comprised is integral with the upright panel 50 and another of the panels 57 is hinged to the upright panel 51 and interconnected thereto'by tongue-and- slot fastening connections 60 and 61.

It will also be seen that those pairs of adjacent panels in the span assembly between which there are no such fastening means are comprised of integral panels. Thus, in the fully erected device, the panels 50 and 51 and the slinglike train of panels 57 together form a load-carrying span assembly which includes fastening means between at least one adjacent pair of panels in the span, those pairs of panels in the span between which there are no such fastening means consisting of integral panels.
The carton blank shown in FIGURE 17 may be provided with top flaps 65 and 66 which are similar in function to flaps 25, 26 and 45, 46 in the previously described examples of the invention. 1 The invention is not restricted to the slavish inclusion of each and every one of the details described above which have been set forth merely by way of example with the intent of most clearly setting forth the teaching of the invention. Obviously, boxes may be provided which change, eliminate, or add certain specific structural box details without departing from the invention. For example, in the first two examples of the invention, holes 16 and 36, respectively, may be provided to provide finger grips for more readily erecting the display device.
What is claimed is:
1. A display device of corrugated board comprising a stand having upright, oppositely disposed pairs of sidewalls at its upper end one of which oppositely disposed pairs of sidewalls constitutes a given pair of upright panels, a bin extending between said pair of upright panels, said bin comprising a slinglike train of panels which are hinged to each other with all adjacent pairs of panels in said train being narrower than the spacing between said pair of upright panels, said bin being hinged to each of said pair of upright panels and hanging as a catenary between them, said slinglike train of panels and said pair of upright panels together forming a loadcarrying span assembly, said span assembly including fastening means between at least one adjacent pair of said panels in said span assembly to permit completion of the span assembly to beaccomplished upon erection of the display device.

A display device of corrugated board comprising a stand having upright, oppositely disposed pairs of sidewalls at its upper end one of which oppositely disposed pairs of sidewalls constitutes a given pair of upright panels, a bin extending between said pair of upright panels, said bin comprising a slinglike train of panels which are hinged to each other with all adjacent pairs of panels in said train being narrower than the spacing between said pairs of upright panels, said bin being hinged to each of said pair of upright panels and hanging as a catenary between them, said slinglike train of panels and said pair of upright panels together forming a load-carrying span assembly, said span assembly ineluding fastening means between at least one adjacent pair of said panels in said span assembly to permit completion of the span assembly to be accomplished upon erection of the display device, those pairs of said panels in said span assembly between which there are no such fastening means being comprised of integral panels.
3. A display device of corrugated board comprising a stand having upright, oppositely disposed pairs of sidewalls at its upper end one of which oppositely disposed pairs of sidewalls constitutes a given pair of upright panels, a bin extending between said pair of upright panels, said bin comprising a slinglike train of panels which are hinged to each other with all adjacent pairs of panels in said train being narrower than the spacing between said pair of upright panels, said bin being hinged to each of said pair of upright panels and hanging as a catenary between them, said slinglike train of panels and said pair of upright panels together forming a load-carrying span assembly, said span assembly including tongueand-slot connections between some adjacent pairs or" said panels in said span assembly for completing the interconnection of said span assembly upon erection of the display device.
4. A display device of corrugated board comprising a stand having upright, oppositely disposed pairs of sidewalls at its upper end one of which oppositely disposed pairs of sidewalls constitutes a given pair of upright panels, a bin extending between said pair of upright panels, said bin comprising a slinglike train of panels which are hinged to each other with all adjacent pairs of panels in said train being narrower than the spacing between said pair of upright panels, said bin being hinged to each of said pair of upright panels and hanging as a catenary between them, said slinglike train of panels and said pair of upright panels together forming a loadcarrying span assembly, said span assembly including tongue-and-slot connections between some adjacent pairs of said panels in said span assembly for completing the interconnection of said span assembly upon erection of the display device, those pairs of said panels in said span assembly between which there are no such fastening means being comprised of integral panels.
