Description

(No Model.)
' S. IRVIN. FREIGHT CAR'DOOR GU AED Patented June 3, 1884.
UNITED STATES PATENT O FICE.
SAMUEL IRVIN, OF SEDALIA, MISSOURI.
FREIGHT-CAR DOOR-GUARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 299,794, dated June 3, 1884-.
Application filed April 11, 1884.* (No model.) I
To all whom it may, concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL IRVIN, of Sedalia, in the county of Pettis and State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Guards and Fastenings for Freight-Car Doors, of which the followingis a full, clear, and exact description, reference be ing had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which Figure l is a portion of a body of a car, showing the application of my improved guard. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section in line with the rod. Fig. 3 is a front view of a slotted bar which is connected to the rod. Fig. 4 is a vertical section thereof. Fig. 5 is a side View of the rod. Fig.6 is a top view thereof.
Fig. 7 is a longitudinal section of the connec 'tion between the slotted bar and rod. Fig. 8
is a top View thereof.
My invention relates to guards and fastenings for freight-car doors, the objects being, first, to provide an attachment to the door by which the door can be opened with freedom and ease by sliding or rolling upon the tracks, yet cannot be swung, drawn, or pushed laterally from the car beyond a limited or necessary distance; second, to afford means by" which the cardoor, when partly opened, is held in its proper place tothe side of the car, and prevented from swinging outward, thus avoiding the danger of it being torn from the car by coming in contact with objects tooclose to the track; and, thirdly, to provide means by which the door, when shut, can be fastened and held close to the side of the car.
Referring to the drawings, A represent part of the car-body, and B the door. The door is hung to the body in thensual way. Secured to the door, so as to slide back and forth with it, is a plate or arm, 0, having a slot, D, to receive the head I of the bar J, which has an eye or perforation in its other end, to receive a rod, L, secured to the side of the car. The head of the bar is in the form of a cross or T, so that it can be inserted through the slot of the plate 0, and then, by
turning the bar so that the eye will be in line or parallel with the rod L, it (the bar) is held to the plate. This attachment is located, preferably, about midway between the bottom and top of the door, and does not in any way prevept the free closing and opening of the door, nor does it prevent a slight lateral swing of the door from the side of the car, which is necessary to clear bolt-heads, castings, &c.; but it does prevent the door swinging from the side of the car far enough to strike objects nearthe track. "When the door is closed, it may be held tight against the side of the car by a key, N, inserted in a hole made in the bar between the head and the plate. The key can be easily and quickly removed when the door is to be opened,to allow the door to be swung slightly from the side of the car for the purpose stated. The key acts to lock the door in its closed position. The attachment prevents the door from being taken or removed from the car, thus avoiding danger of it being lost.
I claim as my invention '1. In combination with a car and car-door, the plate, bar, and rod, the plate being secured to the door, the rod to the car, and the bar forming a connection between them, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with a car and cardoor, the plate, bar, and rod, the plate being secured to the door, and having a slot to re-' In presence of G. O. HARDOASTLE, \V. D. Lower.
