A. ALBIEN.
PUNOHING AND SHEARING MACHINE Patented June 8, 1884.
N4 PETERS PlwlwLixha m lm. Wal
NITED STATES ALL'LEXANDER ALBIEN, on sr. PAUL, MINNESOTA.
PUNCHING AND SHEARING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 299,502, dated June 3, 1884.
Application filed April 24, 1883.
To ctZZ whom it 'may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALLEXANDER A'LBIEN, a
subject of the Emperor of Germany, and a resident of. St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Combined Punching and Metal-Shearing Machines, of which the following specification is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being also had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a plan view, with the operating-lever and lever-head removed. Fig. 3 is a front elevation. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a portion of the device, partiallyins ection. Fig. 5is a cross-sectional view on the line m x of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 repre sents perspective views of a portion of the upper part of the frame, and the punch and cutter and their operating pa-rts disconnected.
A is the frame, having the usual open throat, a, lower jaw or anvil, b, and head B, through which the plunger 0 moves up and down.
E is the die, which rests in a cavity in the upper face of the anvil b. i
F is a U-shaped stop, secured by its upper ends by set-screws e to the sides of the lower part of the head 13, and running across beneath the plunger C,aud with a reccss, through whichthe plunger will pass as it moves up and down.
Formed upon or inserted into the sides of the head B, near its top, are trunnions or studs D D, upon which the lower ends'of two straps or connecting-bars, D D, are pivoted and held in place by nuts or keys.
G is a lever-head, having two jaws formed on its lower end, between which the flattened upper end of the plunger C fits.
' H is a short shaft, (see Fig. 6,) which passes through the plunger 0 and the two jaws of the head G, being keyed or otherwise firmly fixed in the head and turning loosely in the plunger. Upon the ends of this shaft H are formed two studs, II H, of smaller diameter than the shaft H, and adapted to be journaled in the upper ends of the side bars, D D. The studs H H are eccentric to the shaft H, so that when the head G is moved back and forth the shaft H, being connected thereto, will be revolved with it, and by the eccentric arrangement of the studs H H the plunger 0 will be raised and lowered. The head G is provided (No model.)
with a bent handle, G the bending of which prevents it from falling below the line of the stop; hence the handle will not strike the metal being punched.
1 I are two ears rising from the top of the frame A, between which a shearing-jaw, K, is pivoted at its rear end bya pin, g,while its front end is forked and arranged to enclasp the plunger 0 below the head G, and be pivoted thereto by a pin, 9 By this means the movement of the plunger upand down will also cause the shear-jaw to move up and down at one end.
K is a steel cutting-blade attached to the jaw K, and adapted to act in conjunction with a blade, K fixed in the frame A, as shown. The blade K is held in place and made adj ustable from the rear by set-screws h, and made adj ustable from below by setserews 2', while a third series of set-screws, m, may be used to adjust and hold it from the front. This latter set of screws may not always be required, however. places at, formed in them, in which round bars are placed when being cut, to assist in holding them and prevent slipping.
M is a holding-plate pivoted by one end to the frame A, and provided with graduated holes in one end, adapted to come opposite the cavities a when the plate M is turned upward, in which the ends of the bars to be out are inserted to assist in holding them. p,
The holes in the ears I I ,in which the ping fits, are slotted perpendicularly, and the ears are provided with set-screws g in their upper ends, which reach down into the slot, so that the pin may be adjusted higher or lower to adjust the jaw K and blade K. A spring, 9, serves to keep the jaw K upward with its pin g in contact with the screws 9 The frame A is strengthened by extra thicknesses of metal at L L and maybe arranged to be supported by a base, A by which it may The blades K K have each hollow.
be secured to a table or frame; or it may be constructed with a square tapering foot, to enable it to be set in a hole in the work-bench.
If desired, the bars D D may be fixed to the frame A, and steam or other power applied to one or both of the studs H H to raise and lower the plunger and operate the shearingjaw. In this case the hole in the plunger through which the shaft H passes would be slotted horizontally to permit the shaft to move back and forth and not cramp the plunger.
Having described my invention and set forth its merits, what I claim is 1. The combination of aframe,A, sidebars, D D, fixed to said frame, a plunger, 0, carrying a punch at its lower end, and means adapted to give said plunger an up-and-down movement between said bars, and a shear-jaw, K, pivoted at one endto the frame A and at the other end to the plunger 0, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of a frame, A, side bars, D D, fixed to said frame, a plunger, 0, carrying a punch at its lower end and inelosed between said side arms, a forked lever-head, G, adapted to embrace the upper end of said plunger 0, a shaft, H, fixed to the lever-head and passing loosely through an aperture in the upper end of the plunger, and provided with eccentric studs H H, which turn in bearings in the side arms, D D", whereby the plunger is given avertical movement, and a sl1ear- 'aw, K, pivoted at one end to the frame A and at the other end to the plunger 0, whereby it is operated together with said plunger, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of the frame A, plan ger G, eccentric-shaft ll 11 ll", lever-head G, side bars, I) D", shear-jaw K, and graduated plate M, sul'istantially as set forth.
4. The combination of a frame, A, having shear-blade K, set-screws h i, and shear-jaw K, pivoted adjustably by its rear end upon said frame and movable by its front end, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination of a frame, A, having a shear-blade, K", a shear-jaw, K, pivoted adjustably by its rear end upon said frame and movable by its front end, and movable graduated plate M, pivoted to said frame, substantially as set forth.
6. The combination of a frame, A, having a shear-blade, K, set-screws h i m, a shearjaw, K, pivoted adjustably by its rear end uponsaid frame and movable by its front end, and provided with a cutting-blade, IQ, and a movable plate, )I, provided with a series of graduated openings, substantially as set forth. In lesti mony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two su bseribing witnesses.
A LLEXANDER ALBIEJ.
