AGENT.
2,994,470 CONTAINER Manuel A. Engber, 443 Georgia Ave., and Robert Bloom, 308 E. 45th St., both of Brooklyn, N.Y. Filed Oct. 7, 1959, Ser. No. 844,922 6 Claims. (61. 229 52) Our present invention relates to a container and, more particularly, to a cardboard box or the like having handle means whereby it may be conveniently carried or removably secured to a suitable supoprt.
An object of our invention is to provide a container of this character which, together with the aforementioned handle means, may be readily stamped from a blank of cardboard or the like.
Another object of this invention is to provide a box of cardboard or similar sheet material which is initially free from any projecting handle portion, being thus conveniently stacked or otherwise stored, yet which may be provided with such handle by a simple operation when being taken into use.
A more specific object of the instant invention is to provide a container, adapted to serve as a dispenser for disposable tissues or the like, having an integral handle portion which can be used for removably securing the dispenser to the sun Visor of an automobile, or to some similar support, while prior to such use serving to help keep the contents of the dispenser substantially sealed against the atmosphere.
In accordance with thi invention we provide a container, preferably made integrally by stamping from a single blank of sheet material, one side of which is formed with a weakened portion along an open outline (e.g. along three sides of a rectangle) to define a partly detachable tongue which, when pulled out so as to remain hinged to the container on one edge only, exposes a second tongue within the interior of the container, this second tongue being adapted to be pulled out through the gap left in the container side by the partial removal of the first tongue; the free extremities of the two tongues are adapted to be connected together, preferably in an adjustable man ner, by mechanical or adhesive fastener means to form a closed loop projecting from the container. If this container is a tissue dispenser, the loop is advantageously arranged on the side opposite the opening for the tissues.
The above and other objects, features and advantages of our invention will become more fully apparent from the following detailed description, reference being made to the accompanying drawing in which:
FIG. 1 is a plan View of a blank adapted to be formed into a tissue dispenser according to the invention;
FIG. 1A is a fragmentary View of a modified blank;
FIG. 2 is a perspective view of the dispenser formed from the blank of FIG. 1, with parts broken away to expose the interior;
FIG. 3 is a perspective view of the same dispenser in use; and
FIG. 4 is a perspective view of a modified container embodying the invention.
In FIG. 1 we show a blank of sheet material, eg cardboard, which is divided by orthogonal crease lines 14, as by scoring, into two rectangular main portions 11, 21 respectively designed to form the front and rear Walls of the container; flaps 15, 25 adapted to constitute the shorter side walls thereof; flaps 16, 26 and an intermediate strip 17 defining the longer side walls; and tabs 13, 23 serving as corner reinforcements. Front-wall portion 11 is weakened, along an elliptical outline defined by perforations 12, so as to have a central portion 19 which can be readily pushed out to give access to the contents of the finished box in a manner well known per se. Rear-wall portion 21 is similarly weakened by perforations 22 along three sides of a rectangular area 29, the fourth side of the rectangle coinciding with the part 14 of the crease line 14 separating wall portion 21 from strip 17. A tongue 28, narrower than the rectangular portion 29 but of similar length, projects integrally outwardly from flap 26 and is provided with crease lines 24', 24" whose spacing from each other corresponds to the Width of this flap. Tongue 28 is further provided near its end with a hole 28 to receive a clip-type metal fastener 28" (see FIGS. 2 and 3); the rectangular portion 29, which when pushed out along its three perforated sides constitutes a similar tongue hinged to the box at 14', has punched out therein a plurality of holes 29 to accommodate the prongs of fastener 28".
To form the blank 10 of FIG. 1 into the box 20 of FIG. 2, flaps 16 and 26 are glued together in the usual manner, as are the flaps 15, 25 and the tabs13, 23. As the box 20 is intended to serve as a dispenser for paper tissues, a stack of such tissues, not shown, is inserted before the box is closed. At the same time the tongue 28 is told ed around its crease lines 24', 24" to lie fiat under the stack against the tongue portion 29, at the same time covering the holes 29' thereof. When the dispenser is subsequently taken into use, elliptical portion 19 is pushed out to give access to the tissues 31 as shown in FIG. 3; on the other side of box 20, as illustrated in dot-dash lines in FIG. 2, tongue 29 is detached from the box on three sides so as to depend therefrom and to render accessible the tongue 28 therewithin. Next, the tongues 28, 29 are interconnected to form a looped strap about a suitable support, such as the automobile sun visor 30 shown in dot-dash lines in FIG. 3, by passing the prongs of clip 28" through one of the holes 29 chosen in accordance with the girth of the support. The dispenser is now held securely yet removably in place, with the tissues 31 fully accessible to the user.
In the modification of FIG. 1A we have shown the blank 10 formed with a slit 14A through which passes a separately manufactured T-shaped tongue 28A. The T- head of tongue 28A anchors this tongue to the blank, advantageously by being pasted to the flap 26 when this flap is joined to flap 16 (FIG. 1) to form a box. The shank of tongue 28A is shown provided at its free end with a pressure-sensitive adhesive 32 originally masked by a removable strip 33; in this manner the tongue 28A can be adhesively joined to the companion tongue 29 after the latter has been punched out in the manner previously described.
In FIG. 4 we have shown a modified container 40, in the form of a small hand suitcase, which may have been folded from a blank in the same manner as dispenser 20 and which one one of its sides is formed with a tongue 49 previously severed on three sides from the surrounding container wall while remaining hinged to its at its fourth, narrower side. Out of the rectangular gap 42, left in the container wall by the removal of tongue 49, there emerges another tongue 48 which in this case is a separate strip of sheet material, of T-shaped configuration, having its head 44 pasted or otherwise secured to the in ner surface of the container wall. The tongue 48, 49 are again interconnected, as by male and female snap fasteners 49', 48', to close into a loop adapted to serve as a carrying handle.
It will be apparent that there are many ways in which a temporary or permanent connection may be established between the extremities of the handle-forming tongues. If the hidden tongue is not integral with the blank, as shown for the members 28A and 48, it may be produced in the same stamping operation from waste portions of the sheet. Naturally, this tongue may then be attached to the container blank in various ways, eg, by pasting or stapling.
Although the invention has been particularly described with reference to two specific embodiments, it will be understood that the same may be modified in various ways without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention except as limited in the appended claims.
We claim:
l. A prismatic container of sheet material comprising a wall with a section weakened along an outline defining an elongated first tongue integrally hinged to said wall when partly removed from said wall along said outline, and a second elongated tongue positioned within the container in longitudinally overlapping relationship with said first tongue, said second tongue being hinged to a wall of the container at a location remote from the hinge of said first tongue and accessible through the gap left upon the partial detachment of said first tongue, at least one of said tongues being provided on its free extremity with fastening means for securing it to the free extremity of the other tongue, thereby forming said tongues into a closed loop, said other tongue having a formation cooperating with said fastening means.
2. A container according to claim I wherein said tongues are hinged to a common wall at locations separated by said gap.
3. A container according to claim 1 wherein said second tongue is provided with an enlarged head and is anchored to the container wall by passing through a slit thereof.
4. A container according to claim 1 wherein said fastening means includes a first formation on one of said tongues and a plurality of second formations, selectively engageable by said first formation, on the other of said tongue.
5. A container according to claim 1 wherein said sec- 0nd tongue is narrower than said first tongue but of substantially the same length.
6. A container of sheet material comprising a wall with a section weakened along an open outline, said section forming a first tongue hinged to said wall when partly removed from said wall along said outline, and a second hinged tongue underlying said section and being accessible through the gap in said wall left upon the partial detachment of said first tongue, said wall being provided with a slit, said second tongue passing partly through said slit and being provided with an enlarged head maintaining it anchored to said wall, at least one of said tongues being provided on its free extremity with fastening means for securing it to the free extremity of the other tongue, thereby forming said tongues into a closed loop.
