A. R. BROWN.
STALK GUTTER.
No. 299,053. Patented May 2 0, 1884.
INVENTOR WITNESSES Waw ATTORNEYS AZARIAH R. BRO\VN OF GAINESVILLE, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR- TO 0. T. COTTLE, D. T. JEFFRIES, AND M. N. SEVIER, ALL OF SAME PLACE.
STALK CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 299,053, dated May 1884.
Application filed November 23, 1882. Renewed December 4, 1883. (Nomodeh) To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Aznnmn It. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Gainesville, in the county of Cooke and State of Texas, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Corn and Cotton Stalk Gutters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a vertical sec tional view of my stalk-cutter. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a front view.
This invention has relation to machines for cutting corn and cotton stalks; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement, in connection with an upright frame supported on two wheels, of the vertically and laterally adjustable standards, each consisting of a front and rear upright beam and connecting-bolts, and the horizontal rearwardly and outwardly directed foot-knives having upright arms secured to said standards, all as hereinafter set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims appended.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the axle, which is supported by the wheels 13 B. To the axle is secured an upright frame, 0, the body of which is constructed with parallel front and rear walls, (I
and e.
F represents the shafts, which are secured to the axle or axle-frame.
Each standard G consists of a rear upright beam or bar, H, and a front bar, H, parallel thereto. These bars'H and'H are respectively placed in rear and in front of the axle and axle-frame, and are connected together by means of tie-bolts L, which pass through the upper portions of the bars above the frame 0, and through the lower portions of the bars below the axle. The front and rear walls of the axle and frame 0 are plane, and form bearing-surfaces for the standard-bars H and H. The upright standards are therefore adjustable thereon vertically and laterally. Two standards are usually required, each carrying at its lower end or foot a horizontal outwardly and rearwardly turned knife, K. This knife is made with an upright arm, at, extending upward from the inner and forward end of the blade, at right angles to the plane thereof. The arm on is designed to be secured to the rear bar, H, of the standard by means of screws or bolts passing through perforations p. The cutting-edge of the knife K is usually somewhat curved, being a little convex in front near the standard and a little concave at the outer and rear end. The machine is thus provided with a pair of oblique horizontal sickle-knives, which can be adjusted outward or inward and downward or upward to suit the work. Being rigidly connected to the two-wheel frame, the knives have a positive action as the frame is drawn through the field. The weight of the frame above the knives is usually increased by that of the driver, a seat, S, being provided by securing a transverse board to standards V of said frame. By this construction the machine is adapted to be driven across the field in the direction of the rows of corn, and the knives may be adjusted to operate on rows of different widths or at different depths, so as to leave only a small stubble in passing over the field.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, 1s
1. The combination, with an upright frame supported on two wheels, of the vertically and laterally adjustable standards G, each consisting of a front and rear upright beam and connecting-bolts, and the horizontal'rearwardly and outwardly directed foot-knives K, having upright arms secured to said standards, substantially as specified.
2. A two-wheel stalk cutter having vertically and laterally adjustable standards G, and the horizontal oblique knives K, extendin g outwardly and rearwardly, and having vertical arms at secured to said standards, substantially as specified. I
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
AZAEIAH 1t. IBROXVN.
