ALLEN R. SEAMAN, OF ASTORIA7 NEW YORK.
STUFFING-BOX JACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 298,903, dated May 20, 1884. Application filed June 15,1883. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALLEN R. Salman, of Astoria, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Jacks for Stuffing Boxes, Src., of which the following is a specification.
This jack is made of two forks, each of which has wedge-shaped surfaces. One is moved upon the other by the action of a screw. The two outer surfaces are parallel. When this jack is inserted between the hand-wheel and the packing-gland in a globe valve or cock, the screw-cap of the gland can be forced down to press the packing into its place and to hold the cap squarely in position while being rotated to cause it to enter and screw into the packing-gland.
This jack can be used for forcing a wheel off its shaft or performing similar operations,A
where the distance between two parallel surfaces requires to be increased.
In the drawings, Figure l shows the jack applied to the cap of a valve-stem. Fig. 2 shows a top view of the j ack minus the handle. Fig. 8 shows a vertical plan of the jack partly expanded. Fig. 4L is a vertical section taken through Y Z of Fig. 3, also showing the slot in which the screw works; and Fig. 5 shows a longitudinal section taken through E F of Fig. 2.
A representsV the upper movable incline block of the jack, and` D the lower or stationary incline block. B represents the wheelhandle of the valve; C, the cap or gland of the valve-stem. The inclineplane blocks A D are both made Ushaped, the yoke portion a being made with the movable block A, and the yoke portion I) being made with the stationary block: D. The screw-stem S passes through the yoke b, which is out internally with acorresponding thread, and Iprovide a suitable handle, T, by means of which the screw-stein is revolved. The yoke portion ce is slotted, and the end of thescrew-stem is reduced to pass through said slot, and I provide washers upon the stem S at each side of yoke portion ce, and I secure the movable block A and stem S together by a pin through the stem at c. There are also lips upon the movable incline ce, that enter grooves in the sides of the stationary incline D, thus steadying and securing the parts.
In Fig. l the stationary block bears against the gland and the movable incline block against the handle, and the revolution of the screw-stem S in one direction causes the inclined movable block A to slide up the inclines upon D, and causes pressure to be brought to bear upon the object to be compressed or removed by the jack. The revolution of stem S in the other direction returns the parts to. their normal position.
My improved jack is applicable for use in various ways, and I do not wish to be understood as limiting it to stufling-boxes.
I claim as my invention- The combination, in a stuffing-box jack, of two blocks or forks, A D, having inclined or wedge -shaped surfaces where the one rests upon the other, lip-pieces, and grooves to connect the one fork or block with the other, and a screw passing through the head piece or yoke of one of the forks and acting upon the head piece or yoke of the other fork, substantially as set forth.
