Description

LEBBEUS BALDWIN MILLER AND PHILIP DIEHL, or ELIZABETH, N. J.
PITIVIAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 298,701, dated May 13, 1884-.
' Application filed December 8, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, LEBBEUS BALDWIN MILLER and PHILIP DIEHL, of the city of Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have made an invention of certain new and useful Improvements in Pitmen for Sewing and other Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description and specification of the same.
The object of this invention is to provide simple and reliable means-for conveniently placing such pitman in proper operative position by passing it over a crank-shaft or onto the pin or bend which forms the crank, and thereafter adjusting and taking up the wear of the hole or holes in such pitman, through one of which the crank-pin or a portion of the crank to be turned passes, and through the other of which passes the driving-pin of the usual reciprocal driver; and we accomplish this by regulating the size of said hole or holes.
In the drawings, Figures 1 and 2 are front views of such pitman, and Figs. 8 and 4 are edge views, Fig. 3 being partly in section.
The pitman shown as embodying and illustrating our invention is of the form usually employed to receive reciprocating motion from the treadle of a sewing-machine and transmit motion to the rotary crank which actuates the band or driving wheel of such machine. The
pitman A is formed with a recess or aperture, 13. Secured in said pitman-head at the top of said recess is the internally-threaded nut C,
made preferably of iron. The screw D, provided with the pin-extension (2, passes loosely through a hollow in the pitman-head. Its
thread engages and operates in the nut D, and
its extension (1 enters and holds firmly the block E, which is adapted to slide in the aperture B, and is moved by turning the screw D to regulate the extent of the aperture as desired, and held firmly by said screw and extension at the desired vertical point, being also held firmly against lateral motion by said extension.
WVe claim as our invention 1. In a pitman, the combination of an opening, a fixed nut formed separate from the pitman, a block adapted to slide in said opening,
LEBBEUS BALDWIN MILLER. PHILIP DIEHL.
