SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 298,504, dated May 13, 1884.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, MELLEN FREEMONT R013- I INSON, of Litehfield Corners, in the county of Kennebec, of the State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Liquid-Measuring Vessels; and I do hereby declare the same to be described in the following specification and represented in'the accompanying drawings, of which Figure 1 is a side elevation; Fig. 2, a vertical section, and Fig. 3 an under side view of a liquor-measuring can or pitcher of my improved kind. Fig. 4 represents it as applied to a jug.

The nature of my invention is duly defined in the claim hereinafter presented.

In the drawings, A denotes a pitcher or measuring-can having a nose or spout, a, a

handle, Z), and a cover, 0, the latter being hinged to the body of the can. From the bottom of the can, which is coneavo convex, four legs, (2, project downward at or near its periphery, while at the central part of the body there is an ed-uct or tube, 6, opening out of the can,such educt having in its mouth of discharge astopple,f, which is fixed to an arm, 9, project ing from a slide-rod, h, at a right angle therewith. This slide-rod, arranged in the rear part of the can and extended upward through the cap part 2', to which the cover is hinged, is supported in bearings or eyes k k,projecting from the inner surface of the can, the said bearings being of a character to admit of the sliderod being raised or depressed, as well as turned around laterally in them, in order to effect the insertion of the stopple in or its removal from the tube, and of turning the stopple aside or from over the tube, as occasion may require. Furthermore, there are extended downward from the can-bottom four auxiliary legs, Zm m m, the three marked at being curved as shown, and arranged at equal distances apart, and disposed in a circle of about half the diameter of the can-bottom and concentric therewith. The remaining leg Z is shorter than either of the three marked m, such leg Zbeing to rest onthe handle a of a jug, B, when the tube 6 may be in the mouth of the'jug,and the auxiliary legs at be resting on the upper or conical part of the jug, and serving therewith g to centralize the tube in the said mouth, in order that there may be between them a clear annular space for the escape of air from the jug while aliqnid may be running into it from the can. Beside the inner range of legs,there are three ribs, 1', extending from the can-bottom and from the tubeto the said legs, such ribs being to rest on the top of the nose of thejug, so as to enable the air to freely pass from the nose while liquid may be running from the can into the jug. The outer set of legs are longer than the inner set, and are to support the can upon a bench or table, the inner set being for a different purpose, as mentioned.

IVith this measuring-can a liquid can be measured and poured from the spout, or may be drawn from the can through the tube 6, as occasion may require, the measures being denoted by marks or grooves 0 made in the can at suitable altitudes above its bottom.

I do not claim a measuring-funnel provided with a discharging-nose, and a valve thereto, and having legs extending from it to support it on afiat surface. In my improved funnel I have certain auxiliary legs as well as certain ribs thereto, arranged in manner and for the purposes hereinbel'ore described, therefore I clain The measuring can or pitcher. provided with a spout or nose, main and auxiliarylegs, a set of ribs, a dischargingtube, and a stopper thereto, arranged and adapted substantially as and for use as represented.
