SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 298,482, dated May 13, 1884.
Application filed December 26, 1883. (No model.) Patented in Canada December 4, 1833, No.18,234.
To all whom t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL JOHN LAUGH- LIN, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, and a'subject of I-Ier Majesty Queen Victoria, residingv at the city of Guelph, in the county of Iellington and Province of Ontario, Dominion of Canada, factory foreman, have invented a new and useful Self-Acting Elevator-Gate, (for which I have'obtained a patent in the said Dominion of Canada, No. 18,234, bearing date the 4th day of December, 1883,) of which the following is the specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in that class of elevators which are provided with self-acting gates; and the invention consists in the peculiar combinations and the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a front elevation of an elevator with my improvements attached. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the saine, and Fig. 3 is a plan view.
A is a car or platform, which is operated by any-of the well-known means, to which are attached the devices for operating the gate, which consist in the present instance of arms B B, pivotally attached to the ear, and supported near their outer ends by pins p, projecting from the standard b. The said arms are shown converging from the pivotal point, and kept in engagement with the guide K by means of springs N. The outer ends of the arms B are provided with a retaining-point, c, and outwardly-flaring flange c.

C H are counterpoises or weights attached, respectively, to the cords Fand I, passing over suitable pulleys, G, located at the top of the guides L, and attached to the opposite ends of the gate. The combined weight of the counterpoises should not quite equal the weight of the gate E, as it is designed that the gate should close automatically by its own gravity when the car is ascending or descending, the weights being used simply to reduce or moderate the gravity of the said gate. The weight C is T- shaped, and runs in a correspondingly-shaped groove in the guide K, and has a prolongation, C, which extends beyond the face of the guide K, and engages with one of the arms B, in a manner more fully hereinafter explained.

and secured to the guide K, which disengages the arm B from the catch C', and at the same time permits the other arm B to engage the projection O on the counterpoise C, and allows the gate to descend. from above, the arm B engaging C causes the gate to ascend until the car reaches the fioor S. On its further downward movement the arm engaging with D disconnects B and C, and at the same time, C engaging B and resting on it, the gate descends simultaneously with and at the same rate of speed as the car. It will be noticed that the catches C C are oppositely and outwardly inclined. This arrangement is for the purpose of permitting the arms to ride and easily pass the catch in one direction, so as to be in position to engage the same when the opposite catch and arm are disengaged.
Vhile I have shown and described the elevator-well as having only one gate, it is evident that it may be provided with similar ones on each side.
Vhat I claim as my invention isl. In combination with an elevator car or platform provided with suitable devices to open or close a passage-way thereto, a gate, as E, working in ways and partially counterbalanced, and constructed to close the said passage-way by its own gravity, and governed in its movement by the car acting directly on its counter-balance, substantially as specified.
2. In combination with an elevator car or platform and the gate E, the counterpoise C, having projection C, yworking in the guide K, and acted on directly by the car or platform, substantially as and for 'the purposes set forth.
