To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, MARSHALL O. Woons, of the city of Indianapolis, county of Marion, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in TraclcRail Attachments for Replacing Derailed Cars, of which the following is a specification.

My said invention consists in an improved construction of car-replacers, principally for use in connection with combined tram and T- rails, whereby a certain and efficient replace-r is provided, which is also adapted to easily and quickly perform its work.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof, and on which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts, Figure l is a plan view of a portion of a street-railway provided with my improvement; .Fig. 2 a detail view on an enlarged scale ofa portion of two of the rails thereof, where they come together; and Fig. 3, across-section of the same on the dotted line 2 2.

In said drawings, the portions marked A represent the rail, and B a peculiarly-constructed fish-plate, which forms the main part of my improved car-replaoer. The rail A may be any suitable form of acombined tram and T rail for use in a street-railway. The particular form shown is reserved as the subject matter of a future application for Letters Patent. In its top face at the points whereit is desired to have the car-replacersusually at the end ofthe rail-itis provided with longitudinal grooves a, which catch the flange of the wheel as it comes upon the track and prevent it from immediately sliding off again before the draft can be changed, so as to -naturally draw the car into proper position on the track. There are preferably two of these grooves, as shownone near the outer edge of the rail and another nearer the inner edge and a double assuranceis provided against the failure of the replacer to do its work.

The combined fish-plate and oar-replacer B should be of steel, in order that it may endure the excessive wear which will come upon its edges; but it may be of any suitable material. Its top edge, a, comes up flush with the top of the rail, as shown, its outer edge being somewhat longer than the part which bears directly against the rail at its top edge, thus forming a notch between the top corners ofthe fish-plate and the edge ofthe rail, and thereby adapting it to more readily catch the flange of the carwheel and guide said wheel upon the track.

The operation of my invention is as follows: When a car becomes derailed,itis pulled along until the wheels come in contact with the projection a of the combined fish-plate and car-replacer, when they will run up on said projections and be guided onto the rail, the flanges of said wheels engaging with thelongitudinal grooves a, and the wheel thus steadied until the draft can be changed to pull the car onto the track,when the wheels will at once become replaced, and the car is thus restored to a position to proceed on its way.

Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination of the rail A, provided with longitudinal grooves a and the car-replacer B, thetop edge, a, of which extends up flush with the top of the rail, whereby it. is adapted to guide the wheel of a derailed car back onto the track, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination, with the rail A, having longitudinal grooves ain its face, of thecombined fish-plate and car-replaoer B, the top edge. a, of which extends up flush with the top -of the rail. and is constructed to form notches at the ends of said edge alongside the rail, substantially as described, and for the purposes specified.

3. The combination, with a car replacer, of

the rail A,having longitudinal grooves a in its face, whereby said oar-replaceris aided in performing its function, substantially as set forth.
