Be it known that I, ALBERT Roer, a citizen of the United States, residingat Hamden, in the-county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Level and Boring-Guide, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates toan attachment for application to the stems of bits, angers, and similar boring-instruments, and having on its sides indicator-dials and pivoted weighted pointers for the purpose ot' indicating the angle at which it is desired to bore and indieating the conti-nuance or departure from such angle of the bit during its opera-tion, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l represents a perspectiveview of my improved attachment, a portion of the stem of the bit being shown in position in dotted lines. Fig. 2 represents an end elevation of one of the sides. Fig. 8 represents an end elevation of one ofthe sides, the dotted lines showing the frame turned at different angles. Fig. 4 represents a front elevation of the indicator dial, weighted pointer, and indicating-ring, the dotted lines showing the position of the parts when the frame is turned at an angle and the indicating-rim turned to the notch indicating the an-V gle at which the frame is turned.
The object of my invention is to secure a device by means of which, when itis desired to bore either straight or at any angle ont of a straightline in either direction, the angle at 'which the boring is to be accomplished can be noted upon the attachment secured tothe stem of the bit or other 'boring-tool, and the continuance of the tool at such angle, or in -any desired line of boring, or its departure therefrom automatically indicated.
A represents a block or plate, which has a recess, B, to receive thev stem of the bit or other boring-tool, said bit being secnrelyheld in position within said recess B by means of a thumb-screw., C, which is passed through a screw-thread held in the jaw D of the opening B, and by means of a spring-held arm, E, pivoted at a upon the top face of the frame A. The inner end of this arm E projects inward froma portion of the recess B, its i other end loosely engaging by means of an open-ended slot, b, with a pin orjstud, c, on a horizontallysliding plate or bar, d, which is exibly held to the frame Aby means of a spring, e. By this means, when the bit is inserted within the opening B, the inner end of said arm E will press against said tool,and in connection with'the thumb-screw C hold th same Jiirmly within the opening B.
Rigidly attached to the outsideface of two adjacent sides of the frame Aare disks or dials F, each of which has around its periphery notches or otherrindi'cation-niarks G at any desired distance apart, according to the extent of the angles at which it may be desired to bore. Y
Loosely mounted upon the exterior circumference of each disk F is a ring or rim, H, having an outwardly-projectinglug orpointer,

When itis desired to bore at an angle equivalent to the distance between any two `or more notches or indicatioirinarks G, said ring or rim H is turned either to the right or left, in a direction oppositeto the direction in which the angle is to be bored` until the pointerf is opposite said notch or indicator-point.
I represents a weighted pointer, which is loosely pivoted to and within the disk F, in order that it may freely oscillate within said disk when the device is turned in either direction, and permit itsweighted lower end, g, to draw and retain it in indicating position when the frame, with the bit therein, has been turned to the desired angle.
h represents a projection or point extending outwardly from said weighted pointer for the purpose of indicating when the desired position of angularity has been reached. When the extent of angle at which it is desired that the boring shall be effected has been decided upon, the ring or rim H is turned to the appropriate notch. The frame A, havin g the bit therein, is then turned in the direction opposite to that at which the rim H has been turned until the point h on the Weighted pointer I registers with the pointer'i on the rim or ring H, and then the bit can be rotated bymeans of an ordinary bit-stock, `with the result that IOO the bore formed by said bit will be at an an gle corresponding with that indicated on the dial. Any deviation from the angle at which the point i has been set will be instantly indicated by the swerving from accurate registry therewith of the pointh on the weighted pointer I; but so long as the frame and the dial rigidly attached thereto are kept at the appropriate angle, and the boring consequently correctly done, said pointer I will correctly register with the indicated angle. A glance at the dial or disk will immediately show whether the work is being done correctly or otherwise.
In the device as represented I have shown the frame as provided with a disk on two adjacent sides. This is for the purpose of permitting of the boring being accomplished at angles in divergent or right-angled direction with greater readiness and accuracy than could possibly be done with a frame supplied with only one dial and indicating device, and the registry thereof secured with equal facility and without changing the position of the attachment. The ring H is capable of being rotated entirely around the disk F. Consequently the boring-tool can be set at any desired angle or part of acircle, and such angularity correctly indicated. By forming the pointer I with a weighted lower portion, and loosely pivoting` the same within the disk or dial F, it results that whether the attachment, with its connected bit, is at a straight perpendicular or at whatever angle it is turned for the purpose of boring, said weighted pointer will always retain, when at rest, a uniform perpendicular position. This characteristic is illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings, where the full lines show the block or attachment as perpendicular and the dotted lines show it as turned at different angles. In each of the positions shown the weighted pointer retains a perpeir dieular position, registering with the notch or mark indicating the angular or other position of the attachment and bit. The disk or dial F, being rigidly attached tothe block or plate A, follows its movements, and the practice is, as before stated, when the angle at which the boring is to be accomplished ha-s been decided upon, to turn the loose ring or rim I-I around either to the right or to the left in a direction opposite to the direction in which the boring is to be until the point i registers with the appropriate indication-mark on the disk or dial. 'Ihen the block or plate A and bit are turned in a reverse direction to that in which the ring was turned until the pointer h thereon registers with the pointer i on the ring I-I, whereupon it is ascertained that the bit is in the desired posit-ion and the boring can be commenced. Any deviation of the pointer h from accurate registry with the pointer t' can be readily discovered on simply looking at the dial, and should such a deviation from accurate registry be observed it will indicate that the bit has departed from the proper direction and the boring incorrect.

An attachment for drilling and boring tools, consisting of a block or plate, means, substantially as described, for attaching the same to the tool, an indicator disk or dial attached to said block or plate, a rim or ring loosely mounted on and adapted to move circumferentially around said disk or dial, and having a suitable pointer thereon, and a weighted pointer pivotally attached to the disk or dial, with capability of oscillating therein, substantially as set forth.
2. rIhe attachment for drilling and boring tools herein described, consisting of a block or plate having means,snbstantially as described, for attaching the same to the tool, and indicator dials or disks attached to said block or adjacent sides thereof, each dial being provided with an indicator-ring loosely mounted on the circumference thereof, and a pivoted weighted pointer, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
