My invention relates to that class of plows used for cutting ice and it consists in constructing and securing the adjustable cutters and their bearing-plates so as to permit ready adjustment of the cutters, and hold them with aspring-pressure upon their bearings. The beam A of the plow is made in any suitable manner, as shown. It consists of the parallel plates a a, to which are secured the usual handles, B.
The cutters O consist each of a steel blade bent to about a regular curve, and having a bearing at the rear edge upon the curved forward edge of a supporting-plate, D, of any 3o grooved, to prevent lateral displacement of the cutter from its bearing. Thus the cutter-bar has either a V-groove in the rear edge and the plate has a corresponding project-ion at the front edge, as shown, or there is a dovetailed.

The curve of the back edge of the cutter O is somewhat greater than that of the bearingedge of the support-D, and the cutter is forced 40 back against its hearing, so as to bend under the pressure thus applied, thereby having a spring bearing against the edge of the plate D, which secures a much firmer frictional con tact than is possible where the bars are of the same curve as the plates, as heretofore, thus preventing the cutter slipping under the pressure or impact upon the point, and obviating all tendency to slip or be jarred from contact with the plate under the action of lateral blows. The cutters are suitably secured in the positions shown, and the plow is used in the ordinary manner, any wear of the cutting-point being compensated for by setting the cutter farther downward on its bearings.
Any suitable appliances may be employed 5 for springing in the cutter-bar firmly upon its seat and securing it in place and releasing it for adjustment. Thus a wedge, E, may be inserted between the sides of the beam, the front edge of the cutter-bar, and the rear inclined edge of the preceding plate D, or any inclined bearing upon the beam, and a nut, (1, bearing on the beam and receiving a screwrod, 73, projecting from the wedge, maybe the means of lifting thelatter to jam the bar tightly against its bearings.
Instead of a nut and screw-pin, atransverse bolt, h, with an eccentric portion, e, may be arranged to be turned to bring each eccentric portion against the block E; or any other available tightening device may be used.
I have shown two cutters and two support ing backing blades; but any desirable number of cutters and supports may be connected with the beam A.
WVithout limiting myself to the precise construction and arrangement of the parts shown, I claim-- 1. The combination, in an ice-plow, of a beam, one or more plates or supports, D, connected thereto and having forward curved edges, and cutter-bars O, with bearing-edges conforming to curves slightly greater than the edge bearings upon the supports, substantially as described.
2. The curved cutter'bars having their rear bearings upon the forward edges of support ing-plates having greater curves and secured to the beam, in combination with devices for bending the cutter-bars back against their bearings, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the cutter-bars and supporting-plates, the curve of the edges of the bars differing from that of the edges of the plates, and the bearings of the bars and plates having corresponding grooves and projections, substantially as described.
