DRAG-SAW...
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 297,231, dated April 22, 1884.
Application filed August 9, 1883.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK A. GRAwsrrAw, a citizen of the United States, residing at VVillshire, in the county of- Van Wert and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drag-Saws, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawlugs.
This invention relates to improvements in drag-saws, and has for its object to hold and direct the saw while cutting. This object is attained by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, formingapart of this specification, in which-- Figure l is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a plan. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the saw-slide.
4 is a detail view of the saw-slide.
The letter A represents the frame of the machine, having a base-piece, L.
A is an arm attached to the frame, and forming a part of it, having a metal point, U, which engageswith the timber while being sawed, and also serves to support the arm A, and thereby steady the entire machine when in use.
B is a fly-wheel, having a shaft, B, which revolves in bearings B. This shaft is provided with a pinion, Q, and pulley S, the latter being placed on the other end of the shaft.
O is a spur-wheel which engages with the pinion Q. It is secured to the shaft P, which has bearings in the boxes R, in which it revolves, and is also provided with a crankhandle, P, by means of which the whole ma chine is put in motion when operated by hand; but if by power the handle P may be replaced by a suitable pulley.
E is a belt over pulley S, and gives motion to pulley F, which is provided with a pin, f, and pitman G, by means of which re ciprocating motion is given to the saw H, the pitman G being pivoted thereto by the pinf, which penetrates the saw and enters the slideblock N.
M is a slide having longitudinal grooves,
one at the top and the other at the bottom,
(No model.)
upon the pin J. The slide M is secured to an arm, K, which oscillates upon the pin K, and is therefore enabled to descend with the saw as it cuts into the timber, and also serves the purpose to force the saw downwardly into the out. The wheel J acts as a frictionwheel, and also as a guide to the saw, the back of which enters the groove J.
I is a link, which may be made of metal or other suitable material. It is secured to the arm A by the bolt 2, which enters the slot 1', and upon which it slides freely, and at its lower end it is attached to the oscillating arm K and slide M by bolt or pin 1, which also passes through the lower part of slot i.
In using this machine, the arm A is placed so that the metal point U rests upon or enters slightly into the saw log or timber Z, and so that the saw itself is where the cut is intended to be made. The machine is then put in motion by means of the crank-handle P, and continued until the sawing is completed.
Having described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent, and to claim, 1s
1. In a drag-saw, the frame A, having horizontal arm A, provided wit-h metal point U and bolt 1', in combination with slotted link I, pin 1, pivoted arm K, and slide M, having vertical arm M, adapted to support the frictionroller J, as described, and for the purposes set forth.
2. In a drag-saw, the frame A A, spurwheels O and Q, shaft B, fly-wheel B, pulley S, belt E, pulley F, and oscillating arm K, having slide M, provided with arm M, adapted to support friction-wheel J, in combination with pitman G, slide N. and saw H, as described, and for the purposes set forth.
3. In a drag-saw, the slide M, having arm M, friction-roller J, slotted link I, and bolt i, in combination with slide N and saw H, as shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK A CRAWSHAW.
