Be it known that I, HENRY F. BEHNSEN, of Victoria, British Columbia, have invented an Improvement in Machines for Bundling Cigars; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

My invention relates to an apparatus by which cigars may be arranged into bundles and held so as to be tied and prepared for market; and it consists of the combination of devices hereinafter explained and claimed, all of which will be more fully explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in whieh Figure l is a perspective view of my apparatus. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section with the face-pieces I removed. Fig. 3 is a transverse section. Fig. 4 is a view of one of the face-pieces I. Fig. 5 is a plan showing the bottom 0.

A A are the side timbers of a base, having slots or grooves in their inner sides, between which the blocks or slides B are fitted to travel. These blocks (one at each end) are perforated longitudinally, and have a central rod or bar, 0, passing through the holes, the blocks sliding upon this bar and kept apart by a spiral spring, D, which is coiled loosely about this bar between the blocks, so as to press against them and force them away from each other. Behind each block is an eccentric or cam, E, journaled in the side bars, A, and having'a handle, F, by which to turn it. When these handles are turned back, the eccentrics turn so as to allow the blocks to be forced away from each other by the spring D. Standards G extend upward from the blocks B, and are perforated to receive the pins H which project from the facepieces I. These face-pieces have thin tops beveled inward,and have inwardly-inclined extensions J at their bases.

Upon the tops of the face-piecesI are the hinged jointed plates K and L. The plates K have hooks or catches M turning upwardly at their ends, and the plates L have corresponding notches, into which the catches will fit when the plates are drawn together over the cigars to be bundled. Two or more sets of face-pieces Iof different sizes may be used, so that different kinds or sizes of cigars may be bundled, or agreater orless number putiuto each bundle. A slotis made in one of the side timbers, A, and a gage or stop plate, N, fits into it so as to stand vertically opposite the space between the face'pieces I. The bottom 0, between the standards, maybe removable,so as to allow access to the guides and spring, and may have a metal plate, 1, upon its upper surface to present a smooth surface for the cigars.

The operation will then be as follows: The lever-arms F are turned down, thus turning the eccentrics so as to allow the spring D to separate the standards G and their facepieces. The band or ribbon by which the cigars are to be tied is then placed lengthwise between the front and back standards,extending across the plate 1?. The desired number of cigars to form a bundle are placed upon the plate between the face-pieces,\vhich give form to the lower part of the bundle, and the stop N keeps the ends even. The plates K and L are then folded over the top of the bundle and hooked together, after which the levers F are thrown up, and the cams E force the standards toward each other. This compresses and shapes the bundle so that it may be tied and'renioved.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim asnew, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A cigar-bundling device consisting of the perforated standards G, mounted upon horiiontally-moving blocks B, and a means for causing them to approach to and reeede from each other, consisting of the eccentric E, having a lever-arm, F, and spring D, coiled around the rod 0, in combination with plates K and L, hinged to the tops of said standards, and hooks or latches, by which they may be united to hold the bundle while being compressed, substantially as herein described.
