4 Claims. 01. 155-112 This invention relates to an attachment for a conventional barber chair, which attachment is so designed as to add to the height of the ordinary foot rest, for the benefit of children, and others who can not comfortably reach the foot rest.

It is often found, when a child or short adult is seated in a barber chair, that the foot rest is not at a high enough elevation to permit the seated individual to reach the same. The present invention aims to obviate the deliciency which has been noted, through the provision of} sectionally constituted attachment, designed to be connected to a conventional foot rest of a barber chair, in such a way as to provide a foot-engaging support at an elevation substantially above that provided by the normal foot rest.

Another object is to provide a device of the character stated which will be comparatively inexpensively formed,

considering the benefits to be obtained from the use theremit a lower section thereof to be used alone if desired,

with the device also being designed to permit attachment of an upper section in the event additional height is desired.

Still another object of importance is to provide an attachment of the character stated which can be swiftly attached to or detached from the conventional foot rest, without the requirement of special tools.

Another object of importance is to provide a device of the character stated which will not interfere with the activities of the barber, during the performance ofhis work.

Other objects will appear from the following description, the claims appended thereto, and from the annexed drawings, in which like reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views, and wherein:

Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a barber chair equipped with afoot rest attachment according to the present invention, the lower section being shown in full lines and an upper section being shown in dotted lines;

Figure 2 is a enlarged sectional view substantially on line 2-2 of Figurel;

Figure 3 is an enlarged exploded perspective view of the device per se; 1

Figure 4 is an enlarged, fragmentary perspective view showing the connection of the upper to the lower section; and

Figure 5 is a fragmentary, perspective view on an enlarged scale, showing the connection of the lower section to the conventional barber chair foot rest.

Referring to the drawings in detail, generally designated at 10 is a conventional barber chair. This includes the usual, stationarily mounted pedestal 12, seat 14, foot rest support plate or arm 16 declining forwardly from the seat 14, and foot rest 17 projecting horizontally forwardly from the plate 16.

Generally, the foot rest includes, at its front edge, a

2,971,571 Patented Feb. 14, 1961 ice rotatable plate, which may turn through substantially 90 degrees, and against which one may position the feet. This plate is, however, difficult for some persons to reach. In accordance with the present invention, therefore, there is provided a foot rest attachment 18 designed to overcome this difliculty. The foot rest attachment 18 is mountable upon the horizontal portion 17 of the barber chair, clear of the conventional tiltable plate, that is, between the tiltable plate and the chair proper.

The foot rest attachment 18 comprises two separable, table-like, superposed sections. One of these is a lower section and the other is a smaller, upper section.

Considering first the lower section, which has been designated at 19, this includes identical, transversely spaced, vertically disposed outer legs 20 the lower ends of which are formed with C-shaped, inwardly opening extensions 22 defining inwardly, laterally opening slots 24 adapted to receive the outer or front edge portion of the horizontally disposed foot rest 17.

The lower section 19 includes a rectangular, wholly flat top plate 28 which is disposed in a horizontal plane,.

the front corners of said top plate being fixedly secured at 29 (see Figure 3) to the upper ends of the front legs 20. Rear legs 26 are also disposed vertically, but are not formed with extensions at their lower ends, the lower or free ends of the rear legs being disposed in a common horizontal plane in which the horizontal top surfaces 27 (Figure 3) of the C-shaped extensions 22 also lie.

Formed along the inner longitudinal edge of the top plate 28 of lower section 19 is an upwardly directed longitudinal flange 30.

Generally designated at 31 is an upper section. This is lower in height than the lower section, but otherwise is possessed of substantially the same characteristics as the H lower section. Upper section 31, thus, includes a rectangular, wholly flat top plate 32 on the inner edge of which is formed an upwardly projecting longitudinal flange 34. Front, vertical support legs 36 are shorter than the legs 20 and are aligned coaxially with the legs 20. Legs 36,

C-shaped extensions 38, defining laterally inwardly opening slots. 40. Slots 40 are substantially narrower than slots 24, since they receive the top plate 28 (see Figure 4) of the lower section 19, as distinguished from the e tensions 22 which receive said foot rest 17.

Designated at 42 are inner, vertical legs of the upper section. At their lower ends these are in a horizontal plane common to the plane of the top walls 43 of slots 7 alone as shown in full lines in Figure 1.

40. This may readily be noted from Figure l. Legs 42, thus, are supported directly in contact with the plate 28 when the plate 28 is received in the slots 40.

.In use of the device, the lower section can be used In these circumstances, one merely slides the lower section onto the foot rest 17, from the left in Figure 1. The movement of the lower section toward the barber chair continues until the forward or outer edge of the foot rest 17 is received in the.slots 24.

This provides an elevated plate 28 which is used by the seated individual instead of his using the foot rest 17 of the barber chair. The device is thus particularly well adaptedfor use as a foot rest by children.

In the event a still higher elevation is desired for the foot rest, one mounts the upper section upon the lower section. The upper section is slid onto the lower section from the left in Figure 1 in the same manner as the lower section was placed upon the foot rest 17. Extensions 38 receive the outer, front edge of plate 28.

The dimensions of course are not specified herein, since these will vary accordingly to the desires of the particular manufacturer. It is mainly important to note that V 3 7' the device operates efiiciently, in the mannershown in Figure 1, in providing an (elevated, quickly detachable foot rest of adjustable height for a barber chair, without requiring modification 'orredesign of said barber chair. "It isbelieved apparent that the'invention is not'necess'airily confined to'the specific use or uses thereofdescribed above, since it may be utilized for any purpose to which it may be suited. Nor is the invention to be necessarily limited to the specific construction illustrated and described, since such construction is only intended 'to be illustrativeof the principles of operation and the means presently devisedto carry out said principles, itbeing considered that the invention comprehends any minor change in construction that may be permitted within the scope of the appended claims; L 1 -"What is claimed is:'
