COMBINED ANVIL, VISE, AND DRILL.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,658, dated April 8, 1884.

To all whom it may. concern.-

Be it known that I, JAMEs WEATHERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Anvil, Vise, and Drill, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

Myinvention relates toa combined tool consisting of an anvil, a vise, and a drill, its object being to supply several useful tools in one for convenient and ready use.

To enable those skilled in the art to make I 5 and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.

In the drawings which accompany and make a part of this specification, Figure l represents a side view, showing the mode of using it as a vise and anvil. Fig. 2 is a side view with the vise-jaw removed and in condition to be used as a drill. Fig. 3 is a perspective of a block to be used when the drill is employed. In the figures, A represents an anvil similar to that in general use. This anvil has an extended base, B, upon the upper side of which is a rib, which runs longitudinally of it, and

i which is perforated with a series of holes, m an ac, through which the jaw K is pivoted to it.

At the rear of the base B, and connecting with the rib, is a standard, D, which has a semicircular enlargement, d, upon its upper end, in which is out a female screw.

E represents a screw-shaft, which passes 3 5 through the opening in the enlargement d,

having threads suitable to engage with those in said enlargement. To the outer end of this screw-shaft is a feed-wheel, F. This shaft is made hollow, and through it passes a rod, H. 0 The rod is provided at one end with a handle,

G, for revolving it, and at the other with a I head and set-screw, for the purpose of holding a dl'illingtool.

In Fig. 1 a bolt, J, .will be seen, which a, 5 passes through the jaw K of the vise. On one end this bolt has a head; the other end is passed into the opening in head h, and is there confined by the set-screw o. The head it serves to move the jaw K forward, while the head on the bolt serves to draw it backward.

It will be readily seen that the holes in the rib C enable the operator to give the jaw of the vise greater or less capacity.

I represents a block of wood, which is used when drilling. This block is formed at its back to conform to the shape of the end of the vise where it is to be used. It has a flat face, and is grooved out at its bottom, so that it can be made to straddle the rib C. This block is seen in position in Fig. 2.

The article to be drilled is placed against the block, and the drill being secured in the head h by set-screw 0, the feed-wheel F carries the drill forward, while at the same time the drill is revolved by the use of the handle G.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a combined anvil, vise, and drill, the anvil A, extended base 13, perforated rib G, and standard D, which is provided with a fe male screw, all being cast in one piece, substantially as described.

2. The combination, with an anvil having the rib O and standard D, of the jaw K, the shaft E, and rod H, passing through the shaft, and connected to the jaw by the headed bolt J, passing through a hole in the same and fastened in the drill-holder on the end of the rod, all arranged to operate substantially as described.

3. The combination, with an anvil having the rib O and standard D, of the screwshaft E and rod H, which passes through it and carries the drill-holder, all arranged as and for the purpose set forth.

4. The combination, with the anvil having the rib O and standard D, which carries the screw-shaft E and drillrod H, of the removable bed I, adapted to fit against the back of the anvil, as and for the purpose set forth.
