2 Claims. (Cl. 223-89) This invention relates to hangers and more particularly to an adjustable garment hanger.

It is an object of the present invention to provide an adjustable garment hanger having a trouser supporting cross arm assembly that can be adjusted in size to accommodate trousers of any particular size.

Another object of the present invention is to provide an adjustable garment hanger of the above type including releasable retaining means for securing the adjusted cross arms in a selected adjusted position; to be expanded to fit ones coat and retain it in its proper shape.

Other objects of the invention are to provide an adjustable garment hanger bearing the above objects in mind which is of simple construction, has a minimum number of parts, is inexpensive to manufacture and eflicient in operation.

For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which:

Figure l is a perspective view of an adjustable garment hanger made in accordance with the present invention in actual use;

Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the garment hanger shown in Figure 1 with a retaining tube removed therefrom; and

Figure 3 is a side elevational view of the retaining tube forming another part of the present invention.

Referring now more in detail to the drawing, an adjustable garment hanger made in accordance with the present invention is shown to include a pair of angularly related side arms 12 having a hook element 14 integral with the apex thereof.

The opposite free end of each side arm 12 is provided with a cross arm 16 having a corrugated section 18 extending substantially the full length thereof. The corrugated sections 18 of both cross arms 16 are in juxtaposition with each other, with the corrugations thereof 2,966,289 Patented Dec. 27, 1960 in meshing relationship. Thus, by separating the corrugations and spreading the side arms 12 outwardly, the combined length of the cross arms 16 and corrugated sections 18 may be adjusted to accommodate a pair of trousers 22 of any width. For unusually wide trousers, it is necessary to spread the arms 16 further apart, and for narrower trousers the cross arms 16 may be moved closer together.

In any adjusted position, however, an envelope in the form of a tube 20 may be used to maintain the corrugated sections of the hanger in the adjusted position. This tube 20 may be provided with a longitudinal slit 21 which will enable it to be applied to the hanger and which will enable the hanger to be adjusted by removing it and replacing it Whenever required.

While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claims.

What I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is:

1. An adjustable garment hanger comprising, in combination, two angularly related side-arms of resilient wires and an envelope, said side-arms twisted together at the top ends thereof forming an apex and providing a neck and supporting hook there above, said side-arms extending divergently from the apex thereof, each of said sidearms provided with an integral horizontal cross-arm extending toward the opposite side-arm substantially the full length of the horizontal portion of the hanger, said crossarms being in juxtaposition, all of said side-arms and said cross-arms together with said hook lying in a substantially common plane, said cross-arms having corrugations formed along substantially the entire horizontal portions thereof, said corrugations of one of said cross-arms being releasably meshed with the corrugations of the other of said cross-arms, said envelope being a cylindrical tube with a longitudinal slit which enables it to be applied to said cross-arms and the diameter of said tube being such that said tube embraces the said cross-arms and releasably maintains said cross-arms in a selected adjusted position.

2. The combination according to claim 1, wherein said tube encloses said meshed corrugations of said cross arms and restrains said cross arms against longitudinal separation from each other.
