Be it known that I, J onn B. WHITACRE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Canton, Ohio, have invented certain Improvements in Lubricators, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in that class of lubricators in which the oil under pressure is caused to pass through a contracted opening, and is fed into a steam pipe or chamber containing steam, the object of my invention being to coiistruct a simple and direct-acting lubricator of this character.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a diagram, showing one method of using my improved lubricator; and Fig. 2, a sectional view on a larger scale of the lubricator.
A is a steanrpipe having a branch, at, from which projects an elbow-pipe, b, the lower end of the latter being connected to the lower end of a casing, B, containing oil. This casing B has at the top a nozzle, d, tapered for the reception of a needle pointed valve, 1), the
threaded stern of which is adapted to a threaded opening in the lower portion of the casing, and is furnished outside of the same with a suitable operating-handle. The lower end of a tube, F, preferably of glass, is secured to the top of the casing 13, and surrounds the nozzle (2, the upper end of said tube being secured to the casingG of a valve in the branch pipe a.
When the apparatus is in operation, the elbow-pipe b and tube F are filled with water of condensation, the'weight of the water in said pipe 11 exerting an upward pressure on the oil in the reservoir B, and causing the same to escape from the nozzle (1, the escaping oil rising through the water in the tube F and entering the branch (I, through which it finds its way to the 'steamin the pipe A. The rate of flow of oil through the nozzle (2 is regulated by the adjustment of the valve D, this being eti'ect-ed by simply turning the handle with which the valve-stem is provided.
The reservoir 13 is filled with oil through a neck, f, provided with a suitable stopper, and the water of condensation is drawn off from the reservoir at intervals through a cock, h.
Instead of connecting the reservoir to an elbow-pipe, b, as shown, said reservoir may be connected directly to the boiler at a point below the water-line, so as to insure the necessary head of water for feeding the oil.
The advantages of my invention are its simplicity of construction and cheapness of manufacture as compared with other devices of the same class.
The nozzle d, being in the top of the casing, provides for a free and direct flow of the oil from the reservoir, and permits the discharge of all of the oil contained therein.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination of the reservoir B, having .in the top a nozzle, (2, with the needle pointed valve D, adapted to the nozzle, and having a threaded stem adapted to a threaded opening in the bottom of the reservoir, as set forth.
2. The combination of the reservoir B, having a nozzle, d, the needle-pointed valve D, adapted thereto, and to a threaded opening in the reservoir, and the tube F, secured to the reservoir and surrounding the upper end of the nozzle, as set forth.
