S. ROBIN. REVOLVING BooK REST. Y
Patented Apr."8, 1884.

lUNTTnn STATT-3s Tries@ PATENT REVOLVING BOOK-REST.
SPECIFCATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,356, dated April 8, 1884.
Application filed June 1l, 1883.
To a/ZZ whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that l, SIMON ROBIN,- a citizen of Sweden, now residing at Oambridgeport, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachnsetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Revolving Book-Rests; and l do hereby declare that the same are fully described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
rlhis invention relates to improvements in revolving` book-rests; and it is particularly well adapted to sustain books used for reference or study on shelves journaled in rotary heads so constructed and arranged that the supporting-shelves shall always remain at the desired normal inclination during the entire revolution of the rotary heads, and thus retain the books at the desired normal inclination upon their shelves, whether or not the shelves are held stationary or rotatedin either direction with the rotary heads. This my improved revolving rest is equally well adapted for the support and examination of Curiosities or natural-history objects, Src., in museums, or for the support and display of jewelry or other articles of manufacture, as may be desired, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, where- Figure l represents a perspective view of the improved :revolving book-rest. Fig. 2 represents an end view, seen from X. in Fig. 1, showing the end frame as being removed. Fig. 3 represents a longitudinal section on the line A B, shown in Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 represents a cross-section on theline CD, shown in Fig. 3.
Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the different parts of the drawings.
ay a represent apair of stationary end frames or supports, which are connected together by meansV of suitable longitudinal rods or stays, b b b, as shown.'
c c' are the circular or polygonal heads of the book-rest, which heads are united a proper distance apart by means of the central brace shaft or sta-y, d, having journal ends d" d, projecting, respectively, beyond the heads c o, so as to turn loosely in bearings in the respective stationary supports a a.
e c c e e are the book-shelves, each such shelf being provided in opposite ends with journalpins e e, located in bearings or correspond- (No model.)
ing perforations in the respective revolving heads c c', so that said shelves may be capable of turning in their bearings in the heads c c as the latter are revolved in their bearings in the stationary supports a a, so as to keep the said shelves at a proper I normal and inclined position during the revolution of the heads 'c c; and to accomplish this in an automatic manner I secure to .the inside of the stationary support a the eccentric disk f, of a circular exterior, but located eccentrically in relation to the journal d and its bearing in the support c, as shown in Fig. 2.
Around the disk or eccentric f is placed loosely the ring L(/,having radial arms g g gg g', which are hinged in their outer ends, respectively, to the crank-pins h h' h of the cranks h h h, which are secured, respectively, to the journal-pins e e e of the shelves e e e, as shown in Fig. 2, and by means of said'mechanism the heads c o and the shelves c e e may be rotated around the axis d d, forward or back, without changing the desired inclined position of the shelves e e e, which remains normal, so as to prevent the books or other articles resting on said shelves from dropping off. The shelves e e are provided in front with proper ledges, as is usual on inclined shelves, but may be provided with equivalent or other well-known devices, in case other articles than books are to be retained thereon.
are suitable knobs or projections secured to the circumference of the rotary heads c e', by means of which said heads may be manipulated. Such projections, however, are not essential', as ,the said heads c o maybe rotated by taking hold directly on their outer surfaces, or in any other desirable manner.
For the purpose of locking the heads and intermediate shelves in any desired position,
I hingeto one of the stationary supports, a, the
notched locking-lever lr, or equivalent locking device, which is automatically caused to lock on any of the projections by the influence of the springt or equivalent device.
lf so desired, this my invention may to good advantage be used as a revolving showcase to display various articles of manufacture or other objects, and may be kept constantly rotated, whenever so desired, by means of belt or cord power or other well-known means, as may be desirable.
IOO
IVhat Iwish to secure by Letters Patent and claim is- In a revolving book or other rest, the stationary supports a a, the revolving heads c c',

to cranks h h h, as and for the purpose set 1o forth. A
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
SIMON ROBIN.
