JOSEPH P. CENTNER, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
CAR-BRAKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,274, dated April 1, 1884.
v Application filed August 24, 1883. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JosErH P. OENTNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railroad-Oar Brakes;
and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in railway-car brakes; and the object is to produce a railway-car brake that is reliable at all times, automatic in its operation, simple in construction, very powerful in its application, and not liable to get out of order.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of certain parts of a railwaycar brake, which will be more fully described hereinafter, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in the different figures of the drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a plan view of my im proved railway-car brake. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the draw-bar.
In the drawings, A represents the frame or body of a car of any ordinary construction, having at each end the bumper B. To the inner end of said bumpers are attachedthe main draw-bars 0, connected at the central part of the frame to levers D by means of sliding rods (1 d. A cross-piece, a, is secured at each end of the frame, between which and the end of the bumper is arranged aspring, e, on the'bars 0, while another spring, f, is placed between theframe-piece A and a bar, 9, secured to the inner end of the bar 0. The rods 01 slide freely through these bars, 9 with one end, while the opposite ends of said bars are secured to an angle-piece, g, secured. to the bars 9.
Between the levers D is arranged a pivoted lever, E, which is connected at opposite ends to the outer ends of the levers D by means of the links h, while the extreme ends of said levers D are guided in slotted ways 27, secured to the frame-pieces A. The central lever is pivoted at k, and is guided on each side in slotted ways 1. Toward the ends of the levers are attached the rods m, which pass through angle-pieces a, secured to the central parts, A, 5 5
of the frame A, and between the piece A and the angle-piece a is placed a spring, 0, oventhe rods m. These springs serve to draw the levers D always back to their normal position.
- To the extreme outer ends of the central lever, E, are attached the chains or rods p,which connect with the brake-blocks or brake-bars. Another rod, 11, extends to and is connected with the ordinary hand brake-shaft q, for operating the brakes by hand. 6 5,
The brakes may be operated by a steam or compressed-air cylinder placed on the locomotive or tender, so as to be operated by the engineer from his cab, or can be manipulated by the ordinary hand brake-wheel on each car. The springs on the bars C also tend to force the levers back to their normal position, and take-the brake-blocks out of contact with the wheels, and thus render the brake automatic.
The rods d serve to steady the action of the 7 levers D, and preferably one is placed above and the other below thecentral lever, E.
It will be readily seen that by this arrangement a very powerful, simple, and reliable brake is obtained, which is not liable to get outof order, and can be easily applied to cars now in use, and is automatic in its operation.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 85 1. In railway-car brakes, the combination of the draw-bars C, provided with springs e and f, with a central lever, E, connected by links h to the levers D, having attached to them the rods (1 (1, arranged substantially as specifled.
2. The combination of the draw-bars G, provided with springs c and f,with a central lever, E, connected by links h to the levers D, having attached to them the rods d d and spring- 5 rods m, arranged as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination of the draw-bar 0, provided with springs c and f, a central lever, E, connected by links it to the levers D, having I00 attached to them the rods d d and spring-rods irframe, all constructed and arranged substan- IO m, with the rods and chains 19 and p, for opertialiy as described and shown.
ating the brakes by steam or hand power, sub- In testimony whereof I hereby affix my sigstantially as shown and herein specified. nature in presence of two witnesses. 5 4. The brake herein described, consistin of the bumpers B, draw-bars E, with spring; JOSEPH cEN-TNER' e and f, the central lever, E, side levers, D, Vitnesses: links h, rods d d, spring-rods m, rods and chains ANTONY SNYDER,
p p, springs 0, angle-pieces mand suitable LLOYD F. KELEHER.
