WlTN ESSES UNITED STATES PATENT @@FFCFI' u CHARLES F. BEAMAN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOB- TO WELLS- VILLE PLATE AND SHEET IRON COMPANY, OF VELLSVILLE, OHIO.
MACHINE FOR BENDING WIRE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters YPatent No. 296,269, dated April 1,1884.
Application filed February t), ISB-l. (No model.)
To @Z3 whom it may concern,.- Vsupporting the shaft B by a hook, y, also piv- Be it known that l', CHARLEs F. BEMAN, oted to the table. i of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of On the shaft B is detachably secured the Illinois, a citizen ofthe United States, tempoformer H, which in this case is rectangular in 5 5 5 rarily residing at lellsville, county of Coshape, and consists of a cast-iron hub, h, on lnmbiana, State ot' Ohio, have invented or disthe`e`nds of which are formed the disks JL', said covered a new and useful Improvement in Adisks being connected by the cross-arms h2. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of H revolves, are secured the standards Z l', the same, the drophammer being removed. which serve as guides to the reciprocating Fig. 3 is a detail view ot' the tension device. hammer L, which is provided with wings fm, The object of my invention is to so bend which overlap the flanges Z2 ofthe standardsl continuous lengths of wire that regular shapes Z'. The distance between the standards Z Z is 7o 2o maybe produced by cutting the bent wire at greater than the width of the hammer and its regular intervals; and to this end my inven.- wings, thereby allowing of a slight lateral 0stion consists in the construction and combicillation of the hammer during its vertical nation of parts, all as' more fully hereinafter movements. rIhe hammer L is connected to described and claimed. the standard Z by the arms u, pivoted at their 75 2 5 In suitable bearings, a, secured to the bed ends to the hammer and standard, respect- A, is mounted the shaft B, and on this shaft ively. Y l' B, between the bearings a, is mounted the To a bracket, O, are secured a tension degcar-Wheel D, said, shaft and gear-wheel being vice, o, and straightening devices p, and the so connected together by a spline on the gearwire tobe bent is led from a suitably-located 8o 3o wheel and a groove, b, in the shaft B that they reel through the tension and straightening shaft will revolve with the gear-wheel, and devices, and through an opening in the stand- 'will also nieve longitudinally through it. rIhe ard Z' to the former, around which it is to be inner end ofthe shaft B is screw-threaded, as bent. The powerwheel R is loosely mounted shown at b', and passes between the two parts on a shaft, o', mounted in bearings s, bolted to 85 35 c c of a divided nut, C. The parts c c of the the bed A, and on the shaftr is secured aspurdivided nut are mounted in ways in a block, wheel, S, which meshes with the gear-wheel d, and adapted to slide toward and from each D. Motion is communicated from the powerother therein. wheel R to the'sha-ft r by aclutch mechanism,
In the top of the parts@ c of the divided XV, operated by the lever zo. Y 9o 4o nut are formed the slots c', and in these slots The tension device @consists of a steel-faced play pins depending from the ends of the block, o, adj ustably secured on the bracket 0, cross-arm c of the lever c. By moving this and aslidingsteelfaced block, 0i, behindwhich lever c to the right or left the parts c c of the is pivoted a lever, o, having a cam projection divided n ut are moved from or toward and at its lower end, which bears against the block 95 45 against the threaded shaft B. By the use of a o2, and i'orcessaid block toward the block o divided nut I am enabled to move theshaftB and against the wire between them. in or out quickly when. desired. The outer In operating my machine, the end of the f end of the shaft B is supported by a Ushaped wire to be bent is passed between the blocks bearing at the end of the swinging arm f,`piv of the tension device, through the straighten` 10o 5o oted to the under side of the table or bed A. ing device and through the opening in the f `lhis swinging arm j is held in position for standard Z to the former, to whichit is secured.
The shaft B is slid inward, the parts c o of the divided nut being separated for that purpose,
cient tension by the tension device to canse l the wire to be tightly bound around the former. The corners of the former in its revolutions raise the hammer L, and as the revolution of the former is quite rapid the hammer will, when the corners of the former move downward and leave the face of the hammer, drop upon the iiat sides of said former, flattening the wire against the sides of the former. The hammer when it strikes the former rebounds a slight distance, andbefore it can again descend the next succeeding corner of the former will strike the face of the hammer and again fully raise it. This blow which the ascending corner of the former gives to the hammer has the effect of bending the wire around said corner, and as the wire at this corner rubs along the face of the hammer in raising it the wire will be forced sharply around said corner. It will be noticedthat asthehammer is pivotally connected to the standard Z it will have while being raised a slight horizontal movement in a direction contrary to that in which the former is rotated. Thismovement'aidsinbendingthe wire around the corner which is raising the hammer. After the former has been filled with wire, the machine is stopped, the bearingarm f is swung to one side, and the former removed from the shaft B. The divided nut is then opened, the shaft B is pushed inward the proper distance, and another former is secured on the shaft, when the machine is again ready for operation.
The iianges Z2 of the standards are necessary only on the outside of the wings of the hammer, to prevent the hammer from being carried along with the former as it is forced outward by the threads on the shaft working through the nut C. These flanges might be dispensed with; but I prefer to employ them, as they relieve the armsn of any lateral strain. The threads of the shaft and nut are given such a pitch that the former is thrust outward at each revolution a little more than the diameter of the wire. By thus feeding forward the former I remove all liability of one coil of the wire being wound upon the preceding one, which is liable to occur when the former and the devices from which the wire is drawn are stationary.
I am aware that it is old to use a heavy pivoted lever in connection with a revolving former; but in such'a device the wire is4 caused to conformwith the shape of the former by a continuous uniformv pressure, whereas in my machine the wire is subjected to sharp blows, which are effective to bend the wire beyond the limit of elasticity, and consequently give it a permanent set. After the'former is removed from the shaft B, the bent wire is stripped from the former, and is cut in one of its sides, thereby producing a blank ready to be incorporated in the rim of a pan.
Formers having shapes other than that shown may be used; but in case a round former is used some device should be added thereto which will operate to raise the hammer in a manner similar to the corners of the former shown.,
I claim herein as my inventionl l. In a machine for bending wire, a rotating former, in combination with a drop-hammer, said parts being so constructed and arranged that the wire is made to conform to the shape of the former by a series of blows, substantially as set forth.
2. In a machine for bending wire, a rotating and longitudinally-mov able former,in com*- bination with a drop-hammer, substantially as described.
3. In a machine for bending wire, the former H and the shaft B, threaded and grooved at one end, in combination with the gear-wheel D, splined to said shaft, divided nut C, and means for opening and closing the divided nut, substantially as set forth.
4. In a machine for bending Wire, the former H, detachably secured to the shaft -B, in combination with the swinging bearing-arm f, substantially as set fort-h.
5. In a machine for bending wire, the former H, secured to the rotating and longitudinallymovable shaft B, in combination lwith the tension device o and the straightening device p, substantially as set forth.
6. In a machine for bending wire, the rotating and longitudinally-movable former H, in combination with the drop-hammer L, having the Wings m, the guide-standards l Z, having the flanges Z, and the arms n, substantially as set forth. v
7. In a machine for bending wire, the drophammer L, having side wings, m, in combination with the standards l l', so arranged as To allow a'slight horizontal movement to the hammer during lits vertical reciprocation, the arms n, pivotally connected to thehammer and the standard Z, and the former, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
