ATTORNEYS.
CHARLES F. STOCK, OFPEORIA, ILLINOIS.
BALL- TRAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,247, dated April 1, 1884. Application filed December 28, 1883. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. STOCK, of Peoria, in the county of Peoria and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Device for Throwing Targets, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to certain improvements in my new and improved device for throwing targets known as clay pigeon and ball traps, shown and described in my application for Letters Patent which was allowed September 28, 1883,- and the present invention consists of an improved clamp for holding the target; in dispensing with a rear extension of the arm and stud for suddenly stopping the swing of the arm, and in providing the rear weight with a lip or projection for holding the target in place upon the weight at the seting the trap, and of the construction, arrange ment, and combination of parts, all as herein after described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a perspective view of my new and improved targetthrowing device as it appears when set ready for throwing the target.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view, showingthe parts in the position they assume just before the target leaves the trap; and Fig. 3, a perspective view of the outer cndof the throwing-arm, and showing the improved clamp-plate.
A is the hollow post, to be driven into the ground, provided with the pulley B.
O is the hollow head, placed in the upper end of the post A, and provided with the pulley D.
E is the main body of the device, hinged to the head 0 upon the bolt F, on which the pulley D is journaled; and G is the throwing-pulley,
-which is pivoted to the main body E by bolt H, and which carries the throwing-arm I, and has the cord J attached to it. The weighted end K of the main body Eis not plain upon its upper surface, but is formed with the lip or projection L, for holding the target M in place, ready to be thrown, as illustrated inFig. 1.
N is the clamp for holding the tongue 0.0f This clamp is made of spring the target.
metal, and is secured upon the upper surface of the throwing-arm I by the screw P, and is upwardly curved in the center and provided with the screw Q, for increasing or diminishing its clamping force. Atits outerend, where it grasps the tongue 0, the clampplate is de pressed, as shown at a, to form a swell or projection upon the under side of the clamp for holding the tongue 0 of the target; and to cause this swell or projection to effect a better grasp upon the tongue 0, I prefer to cut a portion of the depressed part, as shown at a, thus forming a tooth or spur upon the un der side of the clamp N. The screw or bolt 1? reaches through the throwing arm I, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 8, to form a stud, p, for the bent lJGDSlOD-SPllllg R, (secured to the edges of the body 13,) to engage with for holding ;the throwing-arm I in set position, as shown in Fig. 1. The forward portion of the body E is formed with the flange b, which is cut away at c, where the cord J leaves the throwing-pulley Gand passes down through head 0 and post A, over the pulleys D B, and this cut-away portion 0 is so formed as to form the rounded shoulder d, which acts as'a stop to the cord J in springing the trap, so as to suddenly ,stop the swinging motion of the throwing-arm I at the proper point, and thus cause it to project the target into the air without the aid of an extra or positive stop.
Constructed in the manner described, the device is very cheap and durable, and very effective for its purpose.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
- 1. A. throwingarm for targetthrowing traps, consisting of the arm and a. curved spring-clamp on the outer end of said arm, the said spring-clamp being secured at one end to the arm, and provided at or near its center with an adjusting-screw, and at its forward under side with a holding spur or tooth, substantially as set forth.
2. A throwing arm for target throwing traps, consisting of the arm and a curved spring-clamp on the outer end of said arm, the said spring-clamp being secured at one end to the arm, and provided at or near its curved central part with an adjusting-screw, and at its forward under side with a depression, a portion of the depression being cut away to form a holding-support, substantially as set forth.
3. The body portion for holding the target,
pivoted to a suitable standard or base, and pro vided with a weight at its free end, on the upper face of which is secured a curved lip for the target to rest against, in combination with a throwing-arm constructed to engage said target and remove it from said weighted portion and lip.
i. The combination of the body portion E, hinged to a suitable standard, and provided near its outer end with a holding-spring, R, with the pivoted throwing-arm I, provided with the spring-clamp N near its outer upper end, and with a pin or lug on its under side to engage the holding-spring R, and mechanism for releasing and throwing said throwing-arm, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination of the body portion E, hinged to a standard, A, and having its outer end weightedat K, a lip, L, above said weight,
and a holding-spring, R, with the throwingarm I, pivoted to the body E, and provided with the spring-clamp N, secured at one end to the arm by a bolt, 1?, which passes through the arm to engage the holding-spring R, and said spring-clamp provided with an adj ustingscrew near its center, and constructed to hold the target between its outer end and the throwing arm, and mechanism for releasing. and throwing said throwing-arm, substantially as set forth.
6. The combination of the body portion E, hinged to a suitable, standard, and provided with flange I), cut away at c to form a shoulder, (1, with the throwing-arm I and pulley G, pivoted to the flanged end of the body portion by bolt 1-1, and a cord, J, secured to said pulley and passing through said cut-away portion of the flange, whereby a stop for the cord and throwing-arm is provided.
