To all whom it may concern: j `Be it known that I, THoMAs S. TEW, of Big Rapids, in the county of Mecosta and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvernents in Locomotives; and I hereby declare that thefollowing is a full, clear, and exact` description thereof, I reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification. x
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in locomotives especially designed for heavy work; and v The invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, by means of which the traction-wheels are converted into drivers, connected fore and aft with the main driver, which is connected to the cylinders, as more fully hereinafter described.
`Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig.,2 is atop plan ofa section of the parallel rod at its point of connection with `the connectingrod.4 Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the connecting-rod detached and enlarged. Fig. 4 is an `elevationl of the driver, double crank, and sections of the fore and aft connecting-rods. Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the'main driver, showing its wrist-pin, double crank, and connecting` rod connections.
In the accompanying drawings, which form apart of this spciflcation, A represents the main driver: provided with Wrist-pin B, and is connected with the steam-cylinder C by means of the connecting-rod D inthe usual manner. Pivotally secured to the outer end 4of the wrist-pin B is the arm-crank a; and b b are connecting-rods, one of which is pivotally secured to each end of the double crank a, the connecting ends of such rods being bifurcated, as shown in Fig. 5, so as to embrace both front and rear faces of the crank, to which they are pivotally secured by suitable bolts or pins. One of these connecting-rods, b, connects such crank to the traction-wheels under the fore part of the engine, and another makes a similar connection with `the wheels under the engine, and as both connections are alike a description of one will be sufficient. The traction-wheels E are shown in pairs, two being under the front and two under the rear of the locomotive. These wheels are connectedtogether by parallel bars d in the usual Inanner of forming such connections betweenthe drivers, and the connecting-rods d are pivotally secured to the vertical center line of the parallel bars by means of the joint c, plate c, and bolts, as more fully shown in Fig. 3, the joint c being so constructed as to allow sufficient play for any inequalities in the surface of the road and for curves, without binding so as `to interfere with the proper working of the device. The peculiarity of this joint is that itallows the rod to yield laterally, Where` by the binding effect, which would be otherwise caused in turning curves, is effectually 'done away with.
By my invention all the Weight of the engine is utilized upon the traction-wheels, the latter being converted linto drivers, and hence the locomotive will be found very efficient for heavy work.
I attach importance to the pivoted doublecrank arms a because their construction al lows them to move slightly in passing curves, the one on one side turning slightly in one direction, while the one on the other side turns about equally in the opposite direction; and thus the crampingand binding, which would occur from the moving of the trucks in turning curves, is prevented by the compensation given by the movement of the crank-arms in opposite directions on their centers.
I do not wish to limit myself to theprecise number of wheels or construction shown, eX- cept where especially indicated in the claims, as it is evident that the number of wheels or the construction may be varied Without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I am aware that it is not new to provide a connecting-rod with a joint adapted to' yield vertically, and make no claim to any such construction.
What I claim as ny invention is 1. The combination, with the main driving wheel and crank-pin of a locomotive, of the double-crank arm a, pivotally connected there with, and the rods b b, connected with 0pposite ends of said arm, and: having their opposite ends connected todriving-wheels on opposite sides of the main driving-Wheel7 substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the centrally-l0- cated driving -Wheels of a locomotive, con- 5 nected in the usual Way to the steam-cylinders, of the double crank a,' upon the end of the Wrist-pin B, connecting-rods b, the joint c, the parallel rods cl, and the traction-Wheels E, Jhe parts being constructed7 arranged, and operatio ing substantially as and for the purposes specified.
8. The combination, with the main and secondary driving-wheels of a locomotive, of the connecting-rod b, having one end provided with a joint, c, adapted to yield laterally, and 15 connected at its opposite ends with said main and secondary driving-Wheels, substantially as described.
