ELEVATOR-BUCKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,008, dated April 1, 1884-.
Application filed February 27, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Patent No. 290,053 were issued to me Decemher 11, 1883, relates to belt or band elevators such asare used in mills for raising meal, grain, and other substances from one floor or story to another by means of buckets arranged at suitable distances apart on the band.
The invention described in my patent above referred to consists in a bucket open at its bottom, also at its top and mouth or delivery end, but having raised sides andback, said bucket being arranged so that the endless band which carried it formed an inclosure or covering to the open bottom of the bucket. Buckets so constructed and combined with the band have the advantage of being much lighter than buckets having bottoms of their own. The samealso have a much quicker emptying action and admit of the band being run in a nearly vertical course, and do not clog with or carry around a second time the substance being raised. They likewise are cheap, durable, and strong, and, being secured on the outside of the band, they are capable of being readily removed or applied, as required. The
bucket shown in the accompanying drawings is similar in all the respects hereinbeforenamed to my patented bucket referred to, and
being attached at its back or in its rear to the endless band, which answers every purpose for buckets of a certain size, I construct the bucket so that provision is made for attaching it at or near the center of its lengthor sides to the endless band. This construction and attachment will prevent the buckets, when
of a large size or heavily laden, from pulling away from the band during the lift of the buckets. I
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 representsa vertical section of an endless belt and bucket elevator in part, having my improvement applied; and Fig. 2, a
View, as seen from its under side, of one of the buckets detached.
A indicates'the top drum or wheel, in part, of an endless belt and bucket elevator; B, its endless band or belt, in part, traveling as indicated by the arrow w in Fig. 1; and 0 O, certain of its several buckets open at their bottoms, tops, and mouths, and having their open bottoms closed or covered by the band, to the outside of which the buckets, constructed with a back, I), and raised sides 0 c, are attached. These buckets, instead of being secured at their backs or in rear thereof to the band, are fastened at or about the center of their length or sides theretoas, for instance, by flanges or projections e e on the inner faces of the sides of the bucket in proximity to the. band, and short bolts d d, arranged to pass through said flanges and the band. Thus secured at or about their centers to the band, said buckets, when of a large size or heavily laden, will not,
This is important, considering that the band constitutes the bottoms of the buckets.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In buckets of endless belt or band elevators, having open bottoms and raised sides and back, the bucket constructed or provided with means for attaching it in front of its back, at or near the center of the length of its sides, to the exterior of the band, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. In endless belt and bucket elevators, the combination, with the endless belt B, of the buckets O, constructed i with a back, I), and sides 0 0, but left open at their tops, bottoms, and mouths or delivery ends, and attached at or near the center of the length of their sides, in front of their backs, to the outside of the belt or band, substantially as shown and described.
JOSEPH A. HOLMES.
