Filed June 18, 1958, Ser. No. 742,814
Claims. ('Cl. 1687) l The present invention relates generally to sliding doors and more particularly to hangers for supporting such doors in an overhead track.
It is desirable that the door be easily installed in and easily removed from its operative position; and that it be easily and securely adjusted to provide proper clearances between the door and the floor or surface below the door.
In the building trade it is customary to secure the hangerI to the door by wood screws which may be removed to detach the door or relocated to adjust the door. Repeated detachments of the door, however, cause the screws to become loosened resulting in misadjustment or an undesired detachment of the door. Repeated relocations of the screws to adjust the door, of course, cause disgurement of the door.
. `In the door hanger of the present invention a base member is adapted to be permanently fastened to the door. A hanger member, having a roller adapted to ride in an overhead track, is adjustably secured to the base member by two screws. One of the screws threadedly engages an integral part of the base member and is disposed in an open ended slot formed in the hanger member. The other of said screws threadedly engages a non-circular insert member disposed in a complementary shaped opening in the base member. The hanger member may be readily detached from the base member by loosening the first mentioned screw a few turns suflicient to permit the hanger member to be tilted whereby the insert member may be removed from the base member opening and the first mentioned screw may be removed from the open ended slot thereby completing the detachment. The second screw, holding the insert member to the hanger member, is undisturbed in the detaching process whereby upon reassembly of the h-anger and base members the adjustment of the door is undisturbed. Adjustment of the door may be easily accomplished,dhowever, by loosening both screws and retightening them when the door is in proper position.
It is an object of the present invention to provide in a door hanger means whereby at least a portion of the hanger may be readily attached and detached without affecting the adjustment thereof.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a door hanger which may be readily detached and/or adjusted and whichV is relatively simple, reliable 4and inexpensiveto manufacture. I
Y, It is; a still-further object of the invention to provide an improved roller and axle for adoor hanger.
These and other objects and advantages of the present 2 inventionwill become apparent from the following detailed description taken,` in connection with the accompaning drawings wherein:v
.L portion of the track shown in Figure l;
Figure 3 is a rear View of the door hanger shown in Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a perspective View of the insert member shown in Figure 3; and
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken along line 5-5 of Figure 2.
Referring now to the drawings and more particularly to Figure l, numeral designates a frame assembly including a cross header member 22 and vertical frame membersV 24 and 26. A metal track 28 is secured to header 22 by ysuitable means, not shown. Track 28 is formed with a pair of spaced parallel rai- ls 34 and 36 hav ing a generally U-shaped cross section.
A door 38 is shown suspended from track 28 by a i door hanger 40 which comprises abase member 42, an
, 74 on the hanger member 46 is inserted in the track` 28:
insert member 44 and a hanger member 46. Base mem-' ber 42 is formed with a pair of spaced ears 48 which arey adapted to engage the top of the door 38 to position the base member thereon. The base member 42 is secured'to the door 38 by suitable screws 50 which pass through holes 52 formed in the base member.
The insert member 44 is cut out of the base member 42 leaving a non-circular opening formed therein. A turned up, substantially rectangular portion 56 is formed on the insert member for a purpose to be described later.
The hanger member 46 is formed with an opened ended slot 58 and a closed ended slot 60. An otset bracket 62 is formed on member 46 and is adapted to extend upwardly over the top of the door 38 intermediate the edges thereof. An axle 64 is secured at one end 66 to bracket 62v and is formedv with a reduced shoulder 68 adjacent end 66 and a substantially constant bearing portion 70 from shoulder 68 to the unsecured end 72 thereof. A nylon roller 74 is rotatably mounted on axle 64 and is provided axial movement of the roller is prevented.
A screw 78 having a head overlapping slot 58 engages` a hole 80 in base member 42 to adjustablyclamphanger member 46 to the base member. head overlapping slot 60 engages ahole 84 in the insert member 44 to adjustably clamp the hanger member 46 to the insert member. Screws 78 and 82 may be of thesheet metal type and the holes 80 and 84 may then be unthreadcd; or the holes 80 and 84 may be threaded and the screws 78 and 82 may then be of the machine type.
Each door 38 is normally provided with two door hangers 4t) spaced along the top edge thereof. The base member 42 is positioned on the door by means of ears 484 and is secured thereto by means of screws 50. The roller through an opening 86 between the track and the vertical frames 24 or 26. While only one door is Shown in Figure 1, it is to be understood that in actual practice two doors;
could be mounted on track 28 with one pair of rollers on one door engaging rail 34 and a second pair of rollers on a second door engaging rail 36.
A screw 82'having a- A door is placed in the opening under the track and the hanger member 46 positioned over the base member on the door. The insert member 44 which is clamped to the hanger member is positioned in opening 54 in the base member and screw 78 is inserted in hole 80 in the base member to complete the attachment of the base and hanger members. Screws 78 and 82 permit the door to be adjusted vertically to provide the desired clearance between the bottom of the door and the oor or other surface below the door.
The turned-up portion 56 on insert member 44 projects into slot 6() to restrain the insert member against rotation when it is out of opening 54. This construction permits the insert member to be easily adjusted prior to assembly with the base member, if desired.
To detach the hanger member 46 from the base member 42, it is only necessary to loosen screw 78 a few turns whereby the insert member may be lifted from opening 54 and the screw 78 removed through the open end of slot 58. Upon reassembly, the insert member 44 is repositioned in opening 54 and the screw 78 tightened whereby the clearance established prior to the detachment is preserved upon attachment. `The insert member 44 when. in opening 54 is coplanar with the base member whereby the thickness of the door hanger 40 is kept to a minimum. The screws 78 and 82 are located to clear the top of the door and work entirely in metal so that they may be repeatedly adjusted and/or removed without the disadvantages associated with screw radjustments in wood.
While only one embodiment of my invention has been shown and described various changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
Yl.
