Description
(No ModeL) A. J. WALTER,
' GORKSGREW. 1 No} 295,962, "Patented Apr. 1, 1884'.
WITNESSES: v
UNITED STATES V PATENT OFFICE.
ALOIS J. WALTER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
CORKSCREW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 295,962,6ated April 1, 1884:
Application filed December 20,1883. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALors J. WALTER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have inventeda new and useful Improvement in Corkscrews or Extractors, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawing, in which the figure is a vertical section of a corkscrew embodying my invention, the object of which is the automatic extraction of a cork after being engaged by the screw.
Referring to the drawing, A represents a screw to be inserted or driven into the cork to be extracted, and B represents aframe which is rested on the mouth of the bottle containing the cork.
0 represents the shank of the screw, which is passed through an opening, a, in the top crossbar, B, of the frame B, and has connected with it the handle D.
Rising from the cross-bar 'B is a tube, E, through which the shank O is also passed, said tube being shorter than the shank, and surrounding the shank and tube is a coiled spring, F, which rests on the top cross-bar, B, and bears against the handle D.
Formed with or secured to the top of the screw portion or bottom of the shank, and located below the bar B, is a shoulder, G, which is. adapted to abutagainst said bar and limit the upward'or outward motion of the screw.
The operation is as follows: The frame B is properly placed on the top of the bottle and the screw forced into the cork by the rotation of the handle D. The advance motion of the handle compresses the spring F, whereby its power is gradually increased, the same being exerted upwardly and outwardly on the handle,
and thus on the screw. Consequently, as the screw retains its hold on the cork, when a certain power of the spring is attained, the cork is withdrawn from the bottle. the action being automatical and without further effort on the part of the operator. The tube E limits the advance motion of the screw by the handle stopping thereagainst, and may be gaged in length relatively to requirements.
If desired, ,a tube may depend from the handle, as shown by the dotted lines, so as to encircle the upper part of the spring F and prevent contact of the hand therewith.
It is evident that my invention is applicable to a cork-extractor having a spearhead or pivoted piece in lieu of the screw.
Having thus described my invention, What.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A cork-extractor having a screw, a handle and a yoke or frame, and a spring bearingagainst said frame and handle, whereby, as the screw is driven into the cork. said spring is compressed and exerts its resultant increased pressure to cause the automatic withdrawal of the cork, as stated.
2., A frame, screw, spring, and handle, combined and operating as described, forming an improvement in cork-extractors for automatically Withdrawing corks, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
3. The screw, handle, and spring, in combination with, the yoke or frame having an upwardly-projecting tube, E, substantially as and for the purpose described.
ALOIS J. WALTER.
