a citizen of the United States, residing at 'inga continuation of one side of it.
Demings Bridge, in the county of Matagorda and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wire-Fence Stretchers and Splicers, of which the following is a speciiicatiomreference being had to the accompanying drawings, of which it forms a part.
My invention relates to improvements in wire-fence stretchers and splicers; and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of the parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims. Figure l is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line :v .fr of Figs. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation, part in section; and Figs. 4 and 5 are detail sectional views.

The horizontal angular portions h h of the pieces g g are each provided with an opening,i, in each of which a lever, k, is pivoted. IThe inner ends of the levers k are bent at m, and `projectthromfgh the sides of the opening t', and the bent ends of the projecting legers are serrated. The openings t are provided with springs l, the tension of which is exerted against the levers, and forces the ends m of the levers together, to grasp one end of a broken fence-wire.

q represents a block arranged to reciprocate on the top face of the box c, over the screw Z. The block q is yprovided with a projection, 1^, having a central threaded orifice, e, through which the screw b passes. The upper part of the block q is provided with openings t,4 in which the angular spring-pressed levers u are pivoted. The ends of the angular levers u are serrated to bite one end of the broken wire, placed in a slot, u2, in the upper face of the block q. The broken wire projects a short distance beyond the end of the block q, and in the operation of the machine, by turning the crank, one broken end of the wire, secured in the slota2 of the block q, is carried forward and passes under and in contact withthe other broken end of the wire, held stationary between the serrated jaws of the levers 7c. The broken ends of the wire, after they have been tightened and all slack hand or by means of a wrench or other tool.

secured the arms c, to the outer ends of which are pivoted the arms w. The function of the a fence when a wire is broken and it is desired to splice it. Each arm w is provided with a series of slots, z, each having an opening, e', for the insertion of an unbroken wire to support the machine on the fence. If a top wire is broken and needs to be spliced, the arms zo are turned down and secured to the lower wires; and if a lower wire is broken, the arms are turned up upon their pivots and secured to the upper wires. Vhen the machine is not in use, the arms w are folded down on each other and on the bottom face of the box a, and are held iu place by means of the beveled end of one of the arms, w, passing under the beveled end of a piece, w', secured to one of the arms u.
